FOREWORD
We are delighted to be associated with this extremely useful Community Guide and Directory, which contains a wealth of information and contact details for local groups and organisations across the county borough. The booklet has been produced thanks to the close partnership links between Bridgend County Borough Council, ABMU Health Board, NHS Direct and Bridgend Association of Voluntary Organisations (BAVO). The guide is an excellent example of the positive things that can be achieved when we work together and long may this successful arrangement continue. WearesureyouwillfindtheCommunityGuideandDirectoryausefulreference tool and we would like to thank those involved in its production. The Community Guide and Directory and all its content is also available online by visiting the council’s website at www.bridgend.gov.uk

An hour of your day goes a long way!
If you would like to become a volunteer, know someone who would benefit from having a befriender or would like
to visit one of our community cafés, T: 01656 810400 or E: [email protected]
Imagine going days or weeks without seeing somebody or not being able to get out of
the house? An hour of your time to visit someone or help them participate in community activities can make a huge differ-ence to their day. Join our Community Companions befriending scheme funded by the Big Lottery Fund, to help socially isolated people aged over 50 within Bridgend County Borough. Help them to meet new people, improve access to local services and improve their overall health and wellbeing.Led by Bridgend Association of Voluntary Organisations (BAVO) in partnership with a range of statutory and voluntary organisations, we are recruiting and training volunteers aged over 16 to befriend older people who may feel isolated and lonely for many reasons. Our volunteers may befriend an older person by visiting them in their own home for a couple of hours a week, accompany them to go shopping, visit our community cafés or various other social activities and clubs. You do not need any qualifications to become a volunteer as full training will be provided. All that we ask is that you are a good listener and you have a caring attitude.
Visit one of our community cafés…..If you are over 50, get out of the house, make new friends, enjoy light refreshments and receive lots of information and advice at one of our community cafés across Bridgend County Borough run by the Community Companions befriending scheme for over 50s.
