National Night Out is an annual po-lice-community project that’s meant to prevent crime by giving neighbor-hood residents an excuse to get out and talk with each other. For the fourth year, Falconbridge

participated with an Ice Cream So-cial. A crowd that numbered some-where between 50-80, give or take, gathered at the clubhouse on August 1 for a free swim, Mapleview Dairy’s finest vanilla and chocolate, and a sheet cake provided by Sam’s Club

Big Crowd for Ice Cream and National Night Out

and District 3 Partners Against Crime. The pool and the upper deck were packed. At the end of the evening, we

were joined by Lt. Mark Morais of the Durham Police. A fine time was had by all.

The new Falconbridge Alliance listserv went fully operational on August 16. The old Falconbridge listserv was closed at the same time. The change was needed for technical issues and to avoid potential litiga-tion from a neighborhood member. Over 130 people have signed up for

the new listserv. If you haven’t seen any listserv messages for the past couple of weeks, you’re probably not on the list. All residents of Falcon-bridge are eligible to join, so just do this:

1. Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/ groups/falconbridgealliance

2. Click on the “Join Group” icon.

3. Login with your existing Yahoo ID or create a new one.

4. Follow the simple instructions on the page. (In the “comment to own-er” section, please enter your name and address so we can ensure only neighborhood residents join.)

5. After a day or two, you should receive an email confirming your membership in the listserv.

6. If you have problems getting signed up, please send your questions to falconbridgealliance-owner@ yahoogroups.com

Falconbridge welcomes new neighbors with open arms...and lots of information. Members of our townhome and single-family home Welcome Committees visit new arrivals to (1) tell them about the neighborhood and Alliance events, activities, and resources, and (2) get contact information for the Neighborhood Watch and Resident Directory. These visits are also a way for us to learn a little about new folks—from families and pets to hobbies and interests—making it easier for us to connect around shared interests and build new friendships.

New exercise classes are being planned for this fall, right here in Falconbridge!

• “Fit for Life” classes will resume in the clubhouse on Saturday, Sep-tember 30. at 9 am. We are plan-ning to add a Tuesday morning class as well.

• “360 Degree Yoga” (clubhouse yoga for beginners and advanced beginners) may also be back, after our instructor recovers from her travels.

If you are interested in any of these, please contact Marcia Mayo at [email protected] or 919-908-6984. Or look for more information to be posted on the NEW Listserv once we have schedules finalized.

On the last Friday in July, six Fal-conbridge residents gathered on the terrace of the clubhouse for a 3-hour workshop on hand-dying silk scarves. Despite the steamy weather, we had a blast.

Fun Hand-Dying Silk ScarvesVisiting fabric artist, Marlene

Gluckman, started off by introduc-ing us to the dyes and a few basic techniques, then encouraged us to experiment by following our own individual instincts. As you can tell by the photos, we dove right in — and came up with a kaleidoscope of unique creations! We’ve persuaded Marlene to return next year so we can do it again. Stay tuned! (And many thanks to Catherine Alguire and Marga deBruijn for organizing the workshop!)

FHA President’s Corner2018 Budget Planning

We have begun our budget planning process for 2018. It appears that we will be able to limit any assessment increase to the CPI and still meet our 2018 goals. We will be conducting a “Reserve Study” to deter-

mine our financial capability to meet long-term capital renovation/replace needs.

Painting Underway

We are well into our 2017 painting schedule; Vauxhall is almost complete, Paddington is next on the schedule.

Questions about tree removal/replacement

Frequently, I get questioned about tree removal and re-placement. Limb trimming is largely done in September. You will see crews shortly. The association is responsi-ble for trees on the common area. Trees are only removed if they are dead or a safety hazard. Since most of us are not qualified to determine if a tree is in danger of falling, we typically use an arbor-ist to assist us in evaluating safety risks. Once a tree is removed it may or may not be replaced depending on association or landscaping priorities. As a rule, most trees are not replaced.I believe we all should give a large shout out for our

landscaping crew. They have done a superb job main-taining the community grounds during another long hot dry summer. Thanks to ongoing volunteer support and advice from

residents, we continue to build a community of friends and neighbors who enjoy many activities together, thus enriching Falconbridge. Both the FHA and the Alliance

Boards are truly appreciative of all that residents do to ensure a continuing flow of good ideas and suggestions for improvement. We welcome the feedback.

Tell the Board

We hope that all residents will reach out to the Board, or to an individual Board member, to initiate a dialogue about the concerns and ideas they may have relative to the direction in which Falconbridge is heading. In addi-tion to the ideas and concerns that surface at our open Board meetings, occasionally we receive input via anon-ymous letters with advice on our programs and future plans. We value the input, but it is impossible to fully ap-preciate the contents of these letters when we are unable to discuss and clarify the issues with the writer.

● ● Single Family Home News

es. My sincere hope is that we can all learn to put those values into practice by extending an offer of acceptance to current members of our own community who may not share the same definitions of trash and treasure. Thanks for listening.

—Ed Holland, FCA President

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

We all know the adage, or some version of it, but we don’t always agree on the definitions. Communities try to express their consensus through rules and regulations, zoning and building ordinances, neighborhood cove-nants, and so forth. Some of these are strictly defined, others less so. The good news/bad news for single family home own-

ers in Falconbridge is that our covenants are very permis-sive and contain only a few prescriptive Dos and Don’ts. Some of us prefer it that way; others don’t. Because any changes to the covenants would require approval by at least two-thirds of all single family property owners, it’s probably unrealistic to expect any in the foreseeable future. So, who you gonna call when you don’t like the new

color of your neighbor’s house, or their yard art, or the general upkeep of their property? You can call the FCA (our voluntary single family homeowners association), but in most situations we can’t offer any formal help, due to the nature of our covenants. In many cases, though, you can call the City of Durham. The Neighborhood Improvement Services Department (919- 560-1647) is usually the best place to start with questions of “what can be done” about your concern. Or, we might consider a softer approach – discussing an

issue directly with the neighbor. This is a lot easier and less awkward, of course, when you already have a rela-tionship with the person whose tastes may differ from yours. I guess that’s really the point here – the value of getting to know our neighbors. We determine the quality of Falconbridge in many ways.

The visual appearance and style of our homes and yards is only one. A more fundamental measure of communi-ty – which unfortunately doesn’t translate to property values or show up in appraisal reports – is the quality and range of our relationships with the people who live in those homes and who care (to varying degrees) for the appearance of their yards.Walking through Falconbridge, I’m struck by the many

homes displaying Welcome Y’All posters. I realize, of course, that these are intended to convey our openness to a diverse range of racial, ethnic, and religious preferenc-

The Nominating Committee for the Alliance Board of Directors and the Falconbridge Community Associa-tion Board, including Rae Thomp-son, Kathryn Myers, Ann Noble and Roger Bernholz, met recently and began its work identifying people to be nominated for two open Board po-sitions as of October. One of the three FHA-designated positions on the Alliance Board will be open, and one position on the FCA Board will also be open. That member will automati-cally also serve on the Alliance Board. The election will occur at the annual meetings of the memberships at the Clubhouse on October 8 at 5 PM.

Several people have already raised their hands as being interested, and more are invited to contact any of the Committee members to express interest. It should be noted that in addition to Board membership, in-terested members of the community will be asked to serve on the several standing committees of the Alliance Board. This semi-annual busi-ness meeting of Falconbridge Friends will review how this volunteer group works and will discuss how it can better assist Falconbridge residents with short- or longer-term needs for neighborly help. Friends do nothing medical other

than provide rides to appointments; Friends do nothing financial except shop for food and run errands, and the neighbors they’re helping pay those out-of-pocket costs. Friends also visit & cook for neighbors and assist in other ways (mail pickup and

The Sept. 10 meeting is an opportu-nity for Falconbridge Friends volun-teers to be with each other in a social setting. For other Falconbridge residents—

● ● Neighborhood Watch

These tips on avoiding scams come from Kristin Keckeisen and the AARP Fraud Watch Network.Scammers have gotten good at

convincing unsuspecting victims that they have a computer virus. Their end game is to take your money or gain access to your personal financial information. This is how it works:◆ You get a call or see a pop-up

message on your computer warn-ing that you have a virus (the caller will claim to be from Microsoft or Apple or another well-known tech company).

◆ They convince you to give them remote access to your computer so they can fix the “problem,” but they actually install malware that steals sensitive data like user names and passwords.

◆ Or, they get you to fork over credit card information and charge you for phony services or for services you could get for free.

What You Need to Know:

◆ Criminals have figured out how to spoof caller ID numbers so they appear to be calling from a legit-imate company, so don’t rely on caller ID.

◆ Even tech savvy consumers get caught up in this scam, so don’t assume you are immune.

What You Should Do:

◆ Hang up on anyone claiming to be from tech support.

◆ If you get a pop-up alert that appears to freeze your computer, don’t follow the instructions. Just shut down your computer and

restart to get rid of the phony ad.◆ Look inside the tech support scam

from the perspective of a former scammer at www.aarp.org/techs-cams.

If you’re curious about which scams are making the rounds in our imme-diate area, check out the Fraud Watch Network’s Tracking mapFinally, on a more personal note, I’m

sure I’m not alone in the number of weird telemarketing calls I get every day. You can use caller I.D. easily enough to ignore the ones that come from the various 800 numbers, but these hucksters have become more sophisticated. Recently, many of the calls seem to come from the 919 area code, and some have phony names attached. It could be someone you

know, or something important. You answer the phone and there’s that insanely bright and chipper young woman, or it’s that guy with the big voice who booms, “HELLO, SENIOR…” I’ve never stayed on the line long enough to learn what they’re hawking. One other thing: we’re still get-

ting the computer-generated bogus threats claiming to be from the IRS or some other government agency demanding money. Most of those are so crude I can’t believe anyone would fall for them, but they must get some results or there wouldn’t be so many of them.

● ● Did You Know?

Monday, August 21, found Judy and me under a picnic shelter in a com-fortable community park in Man-ning, South Carolina, along with two or three hundred fellow travelers, mostly families, from nearby states. It was a remarkable experience. Here are a few impressions.

1:15 pm – We can’t see anything through the eclipse glasses except the sun, which looks like a very sharply defined orange dime. A small notch appears in the upper right-hand quadrant as the eclipse begins. Puffy white clouds move across the sky from the southeast. Will they go, or will they stay? Another 90 minutes before totality. The moon’s edge is razor-sharp as

it gradually crosses the sun. The lunar disc is totally black and flat, two-dimensional. The eclipse glasses offer the only visual evidence that an eclipse is actually underway. Even when 80-90% covered, the sun is still way too bright to look at without protection. But it’s possible to see the cookie-bite image when it passes behind certain clouds – if they’re not too dense.

2:15 - 2:30 – Ambient light begins to feel a bit “thinner.” Judy doesn’t perceive this, but it feels to me like late afternoon sunlight. The air temp may be slightly cooler now, but prob-ably still in the upper 80s. We see myriad shadows under a nearby tree – miniature crescent images of the eclipse projected through pin-hole “apertures” between the leaves.

2:40 pm – The sun is almost totally covered, but still too bright to view without the glasses. Except for the somewhat diminished ambient light, a pre-scientific observer would expe-

rience no warning whatsoever that the sun is about to disappear or that the moon is even a player.I’m in a camp chair, glasses on,

watching intently as the solar cres-cent becomes smaller and smaller

along the left hand edge of the dark-ened disc. Progressive movement is barely discernable. Like watching the minute hand of a clock. Waiting intently, I want to see if “Bailey’s Beads” are visible at the moment of extinction, but they’re not . . .

2:45 pm – The solar disc quietly winks out, and I take off my glass-es. In that instant, a spontaneous expression of surprise and delight, amazement and awe, breaks out in audible gasps and sighs, laughter and squeals from our fellow travelers – as it’s suddenly dark. The automatic streetlights have come on.

My first bare-eyed impression: “Holy shit!”

In place of the sun is the prominent corona – not nearly as faint or subtle as I’d expected, but there it is, direct-ly in my face, a feathery gash in the firmament. And right in the center of that garish flare is a flat pitch-black hole, razor-sharp, the size of a dime

at arm’s length. The surrounding sky isn’t black, but very dark blue. A few stars or planets are visible, but not many. The overall light and color of the sky is similar, say, to what we see 15-30 minutes after a normal sunset. A faint orange glow near the horizon, not only in the west, but all around us. The trees and homes around the park obscure parts of that view. But, meanwhile, up in the sky . . . the

corona, pierced by that black bul-let-hole, absolutely commands my attention. Nothing else in the visible sky approaches the impenetrable blackness of that hole. No evidence that we’re actually looking at the moon. It’s more like looking through the dome of the sky into . . . what . . . a void? . . . another dimension? I experience a definite sense of visual/spatial dislocation.Back on with the glasses – but this

time it’s my 8x binoculars as I look for any solar flares or prominences that might emerge from the edge of the black disc. But no luck there. It’s too hard to focus and hold a steady image, and I’m aware of wasting pre-cious seconds of totality. The corona and hole are stunningly more dra-matic and impressive when viewed with bare eyes and in full context: dark blue sky and human viewers oohing, ahing, and oh-my-godding. No birds or crickets chirping, but the air is definitely cooler now. I can’t tear my eyes from that hole in the sky.

2:47 pm – A brilliant spark of sunlight breaks the spell, and suddenly it’s all over. The curtain goes up. Our audience applauds and cheers. What a performance.

3:00 pm – We mill around for a while and share a few congratulations — a remarkable shared experience — pack up our chairs and coolers, then head for home. Wow.

● ● Message from Our BoardThe Alliance Board wants you to know what we discuss and decide, so here’s a summary of our August meeting. And we welcome your attendance at our monthly meetings, held on the first Tuesday of every month.

–Alliance Board

Summary of Board of Directors Meeting of Falconbridge Alliance

■ The Boards of the Falconbridge Alliance and the Fal-conbridge Community Association welcomed Petra Epple to their membership. Petra was selected to serve the unexpired term of Kelly Quisenberry on the FCA Board and, thus, will also serve on the Alliance Board.■ The Boards are beginning to plan for the new fiscal year beginning October 1, and committee budget requests are being sought for development of the budget for the coming year. Income tax filings will also be made follow-ing the close of the fiscal year.■ Harriet Crisp reported on the roaring success of the National Night Out event in Falconbridge and she, Mike Mayo, and Conni Rivers received great thanks and ku-dos for their special efforts making it an excellent event!■ In discussion of Neighborhood Watch issues by Mike Mayo, it was noted that the recent intrusion and robbery on Bloomsberry was a crime of opportunity, as the door was unlocked. He reminded everyone of the significant protective effect of simply locking residence and car doors.■ The Pond Committee is submitting its grant applica-tion for a Neighborhood Grant to the City of Durham for

$2500 to be matched by 110 hours of community vol-unteer work. The project would be an educational and maintenance effort aimed at maintaining a clean, sustain-able, and safe pond for the community.■ Recent mail delivery issues were attributed to the va-cation of our regular mail carrier, Matt Johnson. Service is expected to return to normal with his return.■ The FCA Board approved applications for improve-ments at 6416 Falconbridge Road including re-alignment and repaving of the driveway and installation of a small utility shed. Pea gravel for the driveway was not ap-proved, as the covenants require paved surfaces. An ap-plication to maintain a few chickens and a small, mobile chicken coop at 7 Charrington Place was rejected as being prohibited by the restrictive covenants.■ The FCA Board continues to address a couple of tem-porary fences erected without approval along the gas pipeline right of way.■ Both Boards will meet next on September 5, 2017 at the clubhouse at 6:30pm for FCA and 7pm for the Alliance.
