Campus Outreach was established 40 years ago at Briarwood with two staff men from one fraternity at Samford University. Frank and Barbara Barker had been influential in leading one of those men to Christ. The ministry was initially focused on evangelizing and discipling students on that one campus. One of the staff picked up a hitchhiker who worked at another University. That led to the ministry beginning on a second campus. The staff had a vision to put new staff on a new campus every year for the next five years.

The elders approved the vision and five years later there were five new campus ministries. From the beginning, Campus Outreach has been about multiplication.Today there are 750 Campus Outreach staff around the world on every continent except Antarctica. We have ministries on 122 campuses in 11 different countries (United States, Mexico, Brazil, Peru, England, Thailand, Zambia, South Africa, New Zealand, Brazil, Philippines). 20 of these campuses are overseas. There are now 22 other “hub” churches like Briarwood that oversee a region of campuses in the United States. God has been gracious to multiply this vision 100-fold.Each year, 3,000 students are trained in evangelism through intensive leadership projects in the United States as well as overseas. The goal of the ministry is not only to lead students to Christ, but then to train these students to lead others to Christ. As Pastor Reeder has said, new Christians often have the best network of non-Christian friends. In the past three years on eight campuses that fall under the Birmingham region we’ve seen well over 400 students come to Christ. Most exciting is that nearly half of these students have been led to Christ by other students. Please pray God would continue to raise up laborers.
