2005: Application of offshore-PMCD in Asia
Offshore Evolution: 2005 - 2008
• Asia Pacific Pressurized Mud Cap Drilling (PMCD)
• Moved from Jack-up to floating rigs utilizing
conventional land based RCD systems (Riser Cap)
• Utilized a Model 7100 RCD installed on top of the
rigs collapsed telescopic joint.
Application & Lessons Learned
• Application of 7100 series RCD (Land
version) above telescopic joint.
• Limited application due to drill pipe size
limitation
• Use of manual or Semi-automatic chokes
• Manual system - Level of automation* = 1

Case Studies: Indonesia
Asia Pacific region is prone to tectonic movement, underwater landslides,
heavily faulted and folded strata, lost circulation zones and uncontrolled
mud flows. The conglomerates, igneous, and carbonates prevalent in
this region present many drilling challenges.
Objective • Safely and efficiently drill exploration deepwater well
Results • Early kick detection and well-pressure management capabilities to
enable immediate completion of the drilling environment without any
safety or environmental issues
• Enabled drilling to proceed to target depth despite circulation issues
Current State
• Application of automated back pressure pump
• During connections pump ramp up schedules are
eliminated through automation.
• Improved modeling capabilities – real time
hydraulics modelling and heave correction for
better kick/loss detection.
• Improved kick tolerance via early detection and
automated control.
• Evaluate possibility for influx to be circulated
through riser. 12

Weatherford’s Offshore MPD Applications
Looking Ahead: 2014 Onward
Primary Focus : Process Safety improvement
through
Higher level of Automation
Training the “future crew”
Closed Loop Ready Solutions
• Integrated MPD riser joint
• Integrated automated MPD choke manifold
14
Summary
• Closed Loop Drilling using RCD and automated
chokes provides better control over wellbore
hydraulics profile and becoming norm to drill
deep water wells.
• Lessons learned have provided valuable
feedback to improve reliability and level of
automation.
• Automated kick/loss detection and control
system is instrumental to meet well control and
process safety challenges of deep water wells.
