Jada (Jacaranda acquisitive drawing award) 2012

the JaDa has been run by grafton regional gallery since 1988 and this exhibition will see 50 drawings by 50 artists tour to bundaberg. the quality of the works truly reflects the strength of regional arts practice and the complex and global nature of contemporary australian drawing. the drawings reference national and international issues yet the artists continue to use the primary human activity of drawing to express this current transformation of culture locally and internationally; a transformation driven by technology.

wax & words: a travelling Journal in encaustic & text

since taking to the road in January 2013 with her husband, Wax and Words is an ever evolving and growing collection of words in wax which aim to share some of the wonder, awe, delight and also concrete experiences of life on the road, life lived to touch and inspire, life lived in risk of something bigger than what can be seen. Patricia will be an artist in residence for much of February and march, conducting encaustic (painting with beeswax) workshops for beginners and sharing her love of the written word.

Literary notions is a new series to be featured in the Vault @ brag throughout 2014. the series will see some of australia’s best contemporary installation artists occupy the space using literature as their inspiration. offered in conjunction with the Literary notions installation series is a book club event. We are encouraging book club members to read the associated work of literature that inspired each installation and then join our social event to discuss the artists work in relation to the novel or play. the artists will facilitate the book club events. the 2014 book club dates are as follows, running from 5:30 to 7pm each time.

taking the science fiction fantasy novel ‘a Wrinkle in time’ by madeleine L’Engle as its starting point, which engages with scientific theories about tesseracts (known commonly today as wormholes), neil explores digital literary ‘cut-ups’ through an online and interactive installation as part of the Literary notions series. the texts appear in a morphing, spiralling projected display that are interactive - jumping from one section of the book to another through common words and achieving tree like structures that take the narrative in unusual directions.

in John Wyndham’s 1951 science fiction book (and film) Day of the triffids, his triffids are described as a member of a race of predatory plants which are capable of growing to a gigantic size and are possessed of locomotive ability and a poisonous sting.

Capturing this in essence, these triffids too are fictitious, exotic and colourful looking overgrown plants that derive from single-use plastics, a material that grows to enormous quantities and slowly takes over the world.

sunken houses

in January 2013 the bundaberg region was struck with record-breaking floods. one of the most devastated and widely-affected areas was bundaberg north. nearly every home in the suburb was inundated and consequently damaged by flood waters. over a 12 month period, photographer and bundaberg resident brad marsellos has documented the aftermath of bundaberg north through the houses, people and landmarks that still reside there. heinz reigler has created a soundtrack in response to the images and re-interpreted the emotions contained in the suburb and its residents.

be enveloped by a live performance of the sunken houses soundtrack by heinz reigler and take a journey through 12 months of rebuild and recovery through brad marsellos lens. both artists will be in attendance on the night. Drinks and bites will be available.

We are all one under skin is a touring exhibition which showcases a culmination of on-site work developed through ethnographic research internationally to the end of 2012 by travelling artist Christine harrison. the exhibition will include the cross-cultural mediums of australia-ochre’s, turkey-prayer and ritual, China-ink & brush work, Egypt-papermaking and native materials, barcelona-ochres and printmaking.

neil Jenkins is a uk artist based in sydney whose practice is heavily engaged with electronic media, language, programming and networked communication. he is particularly interested in audio video work with interactive online pieces and installations that draw upon real-time data and visitor participation. the advent of the World Wide Web (www) brought with it amazing new possibilities for neil who has been creating and self publishing artwork that exists purely in a virtual space and allows audiences to

interact with the work, enabling them to influence the work’s ongoing appearance, but also eachother. the network has also enabled neil to use real time data like news headlines, search engine requests, weather forecasts and more incorporated into his works. neil Jenkins work has been exhibited internationally and featured in a number of media art festivals, publications and academic journals. neil has also been a senior Lecturer in interactive media.

neil will be the artist in residence while he installs and is in bundaberg for the first of the Literary notions book club series. neil’s installation in the Vault will be shown from 15 January to 26 February 2014.

Patricia baldwin seggebruch began painting more than eighteen years ago-always abstractly and evolving into encaustic from acrylic over eight years ago. her love for the medium translates into her teaching, and students benefit from a passionate, engaging workshop experience filled with all the knowledge Patricia has acquired and developed in her foray into this rich and diverse medium. her newest ‘experiment’ is moving to australia for two years with her husband to reach, teach and inspire more.

Patricia will be the artist in residence at brag for the duration of February and to coincide with her exhibition Wax & Words in gallery two from 6 February to 6 april 2014.

a practicing artist based in townsville, alison regularly exhibits new works at home, interstate and internationally. a practice that sits at the junction of sculpture, consumer culture and environmental concern, the works invite the viewer to consider why the art forms created are made of what they are. the recycled materials are deliberately chosen to convey the intended connotations. alison’s works have been shown in group exhibitions in townsville, sydney, melbourne and brisbane, including strand Ephemera, sculpture by the sea, and in various collections.

alison will be the artist in residence @ brag to coincide with her triffids installation as part of the Literary notions series in the Vault. her work will be shown from 5 march to 27 april, 2014.

heinz reigler

heinz riegler is an austrian born artist living and working between Europe and australia. riegler has expanded his practice across an eclectic set of disciplines - adding video, installation, compositional and graphite-on- paper works.

in recent years riegler has exhibited an outdoor

installation in the old town of salzburg, curated and performed a three-month season of improvised live scores for brisbane’s goma and collaborated with visual artist allyson reynolds for an interdisciplinary installation first exhibited at the moreton bay regional gallery. Furthermore, he has soundtracked a theo Deutinger short film animation that debuted at the netherlands architecture institute, created an award-winning audiovisual work filmed in the austrian alps as well as released a full length recording through room40’s ‘a guide to saints’ imprint.

riegler has performed throughout australia, Japan, Europe and the usa, he is an aria award winner and was twice short listed for arts Queensland’s grant mcLennan memorial Fellowship. heinz will be the artist in residence at brag in conjunction with sunken houses, a photographic exhibition by brad marsellos in gallery one from the 12 march to 27 april, 2014.
