Having a population of approximately 8,000,we are nestled near the heart of EscambiaCounty, Alabama, in service as the countyseat. An industrial park is utilized by activeindustries and foresight was applied in thedevelopment of the park to have spaceavailable for future expansion. Our localschool systems provide excellent instructionfor our children. The area’s economic base isstable with a variety of thriving businesses andrestaurants. City services provide superior fireprotection ratings and high-quality public

safety. Recreation and entertainment areavailable through yearly festivals, parks,Dogwood Hills Municipal Golf Course, splashpad, skate park, community garden andelevated boardwalk along Burnt Corn Creek.Stately residential areas adorn our landscapewith ties to the rich heritage of our past.Medical facilities provide comprehensive carefor residents. The year 1861 marked the completion of therailroad in Brewton. While the Central PacificRailroad and the Union Pacific Railroad companiesstarted the race to complete the transcontinentalrailroad, this southern town began to flourish.Nestled between Burnt Corn and Murder Creeks,lumber was easily sent not only by railcar but alsoby boat to larger industries where it was marketedelsewhere.

Originally named Newport, the town becameofficial in 1885. The train station agent, Mr. E.T.Bruton, constructed a downtown depot andestablished his residence. Due to his influence andcontributions of his life and work, the Newportsettlement was re-named “Brewton” in his honor.With a thriving pine and lumber industry, Brewtonbecame the county seat where retail businessesbegan to thrive.

East Brewton boasts its own historical significance.Incorporated in 1918, the city of East Brewton ishome to Fort Crawford, a vital element in a battlethat occurred between early settlers and NativeAmerican Indians. The battle took place in what isnow known as Murder Creek.

Brewton, located in Escambia County, is the county seat and houses thecourthouse in the middle of its quaint and historic downtown. Peoplebustle with business from all over the county, and the city easilyaccommodates the action. Atmore, Flomaton, and East Brewton officialsmeet in Brewton to discuss and handle the county affairs. EscambiaCounty also has a transit system, which transports residents throughoutthe city and to different locations in the county for a nominal fee.

Brewton is conveniently located within 100 miles of three majorsouthern cities, Montgomery and Mobile, Alabama and Pensacola,Florida. Just a stone’s throw from Interstate 65, Brewton gives quickaccess to the major thoroughfare.

East Brewton allows its residents to conduct city business inside its ownCity Hall complex, which houses the City Clerk’s office, police and firedepartments. County matters can be handled just a short distance awayat the courthouse in Brewton.

A local airport, on Highway 41 south, accommodates small-engineaircrafts and has a runway length of 5,100 feet. In addition, PensacolaRegional Airport is approximately 50 miles away and gives travelersoptions to a variety of air carriers.

Brewton is also located near several military installations includingPensacola Naval Air Station, Whiting Field in Milton, Florida, andElgin Air Force Base in Okaloosa County, Florida. And who can forgetthose beautiful beaches! Brewton gives easy access to some of the mostwonderful retreat locations in the country. Brewton and East Brewton provide itsresidents and visitors with a variety of choicesin dining and area attractions. Both cities offerdiverse menus for any appetite with a wideassortment of restaurants, ranging from casualto fine dining. Historic downtown offers localestablishments open for lunch and dinner, andsituated close by are plenty of choices for localshopping. Eateries, which serve up bakedgoods, barbecue, seafood, Chinese andMexican dishes, pizza, hamburgers and ofcourse, fast food, are all located throughoutthe city and are sure to fit any budget. TheDogwood Hills Municipal facility features agolf course, tennis courts, gazebo, children’splayground and a splash pad. The CountryClub of Brewton, located on the north side oftown, The Ritz, located downtown on theboardwalk, and The Hourglass locateddowntown, is available as private receptionhalls. The cities of Brewton and East Brewtonalso provide rental facilities that are available

for receptions, family reunions or othercommunity events.

The City Park is located in the middle ofHistoric Downtown Brewton. Featuring aclock tower, cascading water fountain, coveredgazebo and beautiful landscaping, resident’scan take a stroll during lunch or before thestart of a shopping spree in nearby retailvenues. Burnt Corn Creek Park, located justacross the street from the historic downtownboardwalk, is now fully constructed and runsadjacent to Murder Creek. In addition, a skatepark has been constructed for the citizens toenjoy. Also, there is access to the waterway forpeople to enjoy the water, go for a run or strollby on a warm summer’s day.

The annual Alabama Blueberry Festival is heldthe third Saturday in June at Burnt CornCreek Park and a delight for all generations.Brewton is known as the Blueberry Capital of

Alabama and, on this day, everythingblueberry can be found. Featuring arts andcrafts booths, festival cookbooks, t-shirts, liveentertainment, an antique car show,motorcycle show, free children’s section and adelicious food court including freshblueberries and ice cream, this festival providesentertainment for the whole family.

Visitors will be pleased with theaccommodations Brewton has to offer, whichincludes two major hotels. Whatever yourbudget or ideal home away from home is,Brewton is sure to have what you’re lookingfor. The Ramada Inn is located directly in themiddle of town. The Quality Inn is located onthe south side of town and both can easilyaccommodate business and pleasure travelers.There are also RV parks for our motor homeand RV travelers who desire a longer stay.

Affordable living describes Brewton. There arenumerous types of housing available at any level andthroughout the city. Smaller, traditionalneighborhoods abound, as well as newer, privatesubdivisions such as Juniper Creek and the CountryClub estates, where one can build a dream homealongside a beautifully manicured golf course.Apartment complexes and rental properties are alsoavailable in Brewton and can accommodate familiesof any size.

Belleville Avenue runs parallel to the mainthoroughfare and is home to spectacular, historicresidences and beautiful oak trees that line thestreets. These stately homes convey memories offamilies past and present. The old, southern-stylearchitecture is a delight to residents and visitors alike.

The Brewton Arts Council takes great pride indelivering art and culture to Brewton’sresidents. Each year, this civic organizationsolicits playgroups, theater and musical actsfrom New York and beyond to entertainresidents at our own Jefferson DavisCommunity College’s Woodfin PattersonAuditorium. Local dance and theaterinstructors organize annual recitals featuringlocal children and teens performing jazznumbers, ballet and tap, baton, gymnastics aswell as dramatic, comedic and musical theater.The community college also houses awonderful museum in which local residentshave contributed artifacts and items that havebeen retrieved from all over Escambia County.The museum stores and displays these itemsfor all residents and visitors to view anddiscover our collective history.

The annual Alabama Blueberry Festival is heldon the third Saturday in June. Many Brewtonresidents and thousands of visitors travel fromall over the Southeast to enjoy the locallymade blueberry treats and live entertainment.Vendors present their handmade arts andcrafts, and visitors can view antiqueautomobiles at the car show. Children are alsoamused and entertained by the mini-train, facepainting, pony rides, petting zoo, inflatables,water slides and bungee jump.

The city of Brewton hosts the annualBlueberry Drop downtown in Burnt CornCreek Park every New Year’s Eve to celebratethis festive holiday. Music, dancing andfireworks are all part of the celebrationculminating in the lowering of a blueberrycluster as the seconds count down to

midnight. New York’s celebration is no rivalfor this favorite tradition for local residents.

The Fourth of July celebration is hosted by thecity of East Brewton. Entertainment, cardgames, duck races as well as food are providedfor revelers, and the day is capped off with awonderful fireworks display.

Throughout the year there are other localevents and celebrations such as the annualChristmas Parade, Earth Day and Relay forLife where everyone is invited outdoors for funand activity. Please call the Chamber ofCommerce for a list of these entertainmentopportunities.

The Brewton Area YMCA providesrecreational opportunities for everyone. Withan indoor swimming pool, sauna, basketballcourts, indoor walking track, weight room andmultiple baseball fields, the “Y” accommodatesseveral activities simultaneously throughoutthe year. Also available for members areaerobics, weight training, yoga, karate andZumba.

In addition to the nursery, which providesdaytime child care while adults are enjoyingfree time, the YMCA boasts one of the bestlocal preschool programs. After-school andsummertime programs are also sponsored bythe “Y” for children of all ages.

Sports teams and classes are held throughoutthe year. T-ball, soccer, swim instruction, balletand martial arts are just a few of the

opportunities provided for the young people atthe “Y.”

The city of Brewton maintains the DogwoodHills facility, which contains a public golfcourse, playground, tennis courts and splashpad. The public is welcome to enjoy theoutdoors at the fabulous park. The downtownCity Park is a wonderful leisure spot andBurnt Corn Creek Park has a beautiful bikepath, walking trail and skate park. SportsmanPark, O’Bannon Park and Alco Park are alsoavailable for adults and children to enjoy. Apleasant 18-hole golf course is located at theCountry Club of Brewton. Designed by thefamed Jerry Pate, the golf course is the pride ofmany Brewton residents. Also available at theCountry Club are tennis courts, a swimmingpool and play area.

In addition to possessing Fort Crawford Park,the city of East Brewton has three ball fieldsand four tennis courts.

Football is major entertainment in Brewtonand East Brewton. The T.R. Miller Tigers andW.S. Neal Eagles provide excellent athleticaccomplishments every season. Every Fridaynight in the fall, the football stadiums arepacked with cheering fans. The half-timeshows are also a great draw featuring theaward-winning T.R. Miller and W.S. NealHigh School bands. Both schools boastoutstanding athletes in other departments aswell, including track, baseball, softball, tennis,golf, volleyball and basketball. Each game orevent is an opportunity to be entertained byour local athletes.

Brewton and East Brewton have outstandingeducational facilities with longstandingreputations. From preschool to college level,there are opportunities for everyone tobroaden their horizons and take advantage ofwhat our institutions have to offer.

St. Stephen’s Preschool has an excellentmorning program for three-and four-year-oldpre-kindergarten children. With a waiting listthat forms years in advance, this covetedfacility is first-rate. The YMCA maintains afull-day preschool program, as well as after-school programs for students from age twothrough sixth grade. With a waiting list oftheir own, this invaluable facility is vital to theBrewton community.

Brewton Elementary School, Brewton MiddleSchool and T.R. Miller High School inBrewton are exceptional teaching facilities,educating young people in the community.Offering top-of-the-line programs preparingstudents for the future, these schools receivetop honors when recognized by the state.

In neighboring East Brewton, W.S. NealElementary School, W.S. Neal Middle Schooland W.S. Neal High School also provideexceptional academic curricula to theirstudents. The county school system andadministration have developed a successfuleducational plan, and as a result, studentenrollment increases every year and skilled and

knowledgeable instructors are recruited intothe system.

Students, as well as residents, are able to utilizeBrewton’s excellent public library, which takespride in providing quality literature andcomputer resources. Another institution,Brewton Career Tech, is one of EscambiaCounty’s most valuable resources. Thiseducational facility provides local high schoolstudents with career path options and electivesoutside of the traditional curricula. Theschools curriculum includes businesseducation, health science, masonry, welding,automotive, building construction and childcare, and is available to high school students atT.R. Miller, W.S. Neal and Flomaton HighSchools.

Together, Brewton City Schools and EscambiaCounty Schools are responsible for theeducation of children in the Brewton area, andthey offering many strong opportunities forlearning and growth. With highly dedicatededucators and instructors, these relatively smallschools are able to offer challenging academicsand more chances for students to participate ina variety of athletic and extracurricularactivities than they might receive at a largerschool.

Brewton offers a wide variety of retail storesfor shoppers. Whether you’re windowshopping or embarking on a shopping spree,you’ll be sure to find whatever you need inBrewton. The city has recruited new retailers,restaurants and financial establishments in aneffort to provide Brewton and East Brewtonresidents with a variety of locations to choosefrom.

Walking along the boardwalk in quaintdowntown, one will find clothing boutiques, ajewelry store, beauty salons and gift shops.

Just across the street on Belleville Avenue,patrons will be delighted by an antique retaileras well as a popular outlet store that displaysfloral arrangements and home accessories.Across the railroad tracks is a trendy florist andlocal restaurant. In a two-block radius, ashopper can spend all day looking for whateverit is he or she may need or want.

T.R. Miller Mill is the oldest timber company in the area.Making wood products, the company is still operated by thesame family who founded the business in the 1800s. Georgia-Pacific is the largest employer in the area, creating over 450 jobsin the community. Paperboard is its main product, and it isshipped all over the country from right here in Brewton. Natural Decorations, Inc. (NDI) produces artificial plants andis located in the Industrial Park in Brewton. NDI manufacturesarrangements, which are sold and shipped all over the world.NDI offers a plant tour, which showcases how their products aremade and is a local tourist attraction. West Gate Village, a skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility, has beenserving the Greater Brewton area since 1965, and accommodates 129residents with private and semi-private rooms. Rehabilitative therapiesare available to community residents requiring a short-term stay. Theprofessional staff consists of licensed physicians and registered nursingspecialists providing quality care 24 hours a day. The Meadows, whichis an assisted living facility, is just across the street and is able to

The cities of Brewton and East Brewton areeach governed by a mayor and city councilthat meet at their respective City Halls todiscuss matters and issues pertaining to ourcommunity. Escambia County is governed bya county commission and Brewton, being thelargest municipality in the county, is thecounty seat. The other municipalities inEscambia County are East Brewton,Flomaton, Riverview, Pollard and Atmore.

Brewton and East Brewton provide theirresidents with quality residential services,including water, gas and trash pick-up. TheUtilities and Public Works departmentssupervise and maintain all aspects of Brewton’sappearance, including street maintenance,drainage and pipe reparations, landscapingand beautification projects.

Currently, Brewton’s police department has 28officers on duty. The Chief of Police and hisstaff are always on hand to handle anysituation that may arise. The fire department is

also ready to handle any emergency with 14full-time and six volunteer firefighters on duty.The department has three large-volumepumpers housed in a central location on St. Nicholas Avenue behind historic BellevilleAvenue and one housed at the airport. Inaddition, the county has nearly 20 volunteerfire departments in the area. Escambia Countyhas an Enhanced 911 Emergency Systemwhich is up to task to handle any emergencyto which they are called. With ambulatory

services in addition to helicopter capabilities,Brewton’s emergency system is extremelycapable.

East Brewton has a police department withfour full-time officers and one part-time onduty led by its own Chief of Police. The firedepartment has four full-time firefighters and25 volunteers. The department has two trucks,one tanker and a van, and is manned 24 hoursa day to handle emergencies in East Brewton.

Brewton is home to several denominations andhas many historic churches that are animportant part of city life. There are nearly 60churches in the city and surrounding area,including Protestant, Catholic and Pentecostalplaces to worship. Driving down BellevilleAvenue, residents may attend churches in orclose to downtown. Many other churches arelocated in quaint neighborhoods and have thatgood, old-town feel. Maintained by theirparishes, these old buildings are magnificent inarchitecture and lively places to worship.

Many community activities are organized bythe churches in Brewton and East Brewton,bringing together people and visitors from allwalks of life. These churches also havemultiple youth and children’s programs, whichoffer another form of recreation for the city’syoung people. Some churches have a mid-week service with an informal dinner, whichprovides an opportunity for members togather and worship, and many churchgoers areinvolved in volunteer efforts in ourcommunity.

Civic organizations in Brewton help supportthe community through fundraisers, volunteerprograms and activities. The Rotary Club,Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, Civic League,Sportsman Club, Brewton Council of the Arts,the United Fund, Relay for Life and EscambiaCounty Habitat for Humanity are just a feworganizations that are dynamic and extremelyinvolved in Brewton affairs and strive to makea difference in the lives of our residents.
