BRENTOR COMMONS

A n early morning walk showed us the common in a

different light. A heavy mist and still air created

such a silent and peaceful atmosphere. The mist

shrouded spider webs, especially on the gorse, were

quite incredible in their density. Every branch had its

own webs, perhaps up to fifty in each bush. There

seemed to be two types of web present, the classic fairy

tale orb and the three dimensional ones; the water

droplets on the latter, making them sink a little to re-

semble hammocks. Towards the end of the walk the

heat of the sun was able to “burn off” the mist and allow

the blue sky to shine through. As this happened the area

became alive with thrushes and blackbirds. They were

charging around in considerable numbers, many more

than the common would normally hold. I imagine that

these were harbingers, probably from northern Eng-

land or the near continent, of the fieldfares and redwing

that will be arriving soon. Several red admirals were

also on the wing even though the air temperature was

still low.

O ur pond clearing effort was a great success. We

were able to start a fire to get rid of the rubbish

that had been dumped there earlier in the year as well

as the huge pile of “brash” that we had piled up when

opening up the edge of the pond on our last clearing

session. We saw frogs and toads much to the delight of

our five year old helper.

T here has been no further attempt to use the track

that was cut into Liddaton Common. We hope that

this is the last we will have to do anything about it and

the ground can regenerate naturally.

Jumble Sale

Thank you to everyone who helped on the day and for all

'donations'. We didn't have as many customers, possibly

due to the weather but think we took approx £200 to-

wards Village Hall fundraising. So a successful day.

WEST DEVON SAFE HAVEN Supporting Refugee Families in West Devon

Second General Update There are now two families, one in Tavistock and one in Okehampton. They have been here for a couple of months and seem to be settling in well. We hope to re-ceive the next family shortly and one more just before Christmas. West Devon Safe Haven is now formally a charity. We have been working hard since February. We would like to invite all those interested to a second Public Meeting and Consultation on 10 November at 6pm in Tavistock Community College There will be a keynote presentation from the UN’s In-stitute of Migration, updates from the District and County Councils and a full report about our own pro-gress. We would like to ask everybody about what they think future directions might be. And we know a lot more than we did in February about what kind of help we need! Please do come if you can make it. Food for Thought

Many thanks to everyone who came along to the recent Palestinian themed evening. We shared an amazing feast of our newly tried recipes – it was great! David Oddie’s talk afterwards was very enlightening; both challenging and thought provoking, it was followed by much discussion. We were able to raise £165 towards Indra Congress. Following the evening’s success we are talking about organising other Food for Thought evenings in the fu-ture. If you know of anyone who would be interested in giving a talk or presentation then please get in touch. Thank you very much indeed to all the chefs and help-ers both before and afterwards Jane Phelpstead 801635

Poppy Appeal 2017 Celebrating 96 years of giving

T he Editors of the Brentor News have kindly agreed to

circulate a “gift-aid” envelope with the November

issue of the Brentor News in anticipation of our efforts to

complete the village collection for the forthcoming Poppy

Appeal by Remembrance Sunday 12th November.

L ast year the Parish achieved a magnificent sum col-

lected of £985.52 - an increase of £56.71 on last year!

This is so much appreciated by the Royal British Legion,

whose efforts to care for so many of our wounded and

ageing ex-servicemen just cannot be underestimated.

Thank you all so much.

F urthermore, £420 of last year’s collection was kindly

“gift-aided", which meant an extra £105 for the Brit-

ish Legion, an increase of £30.25 on last year! Thank you

so much to all those kind people in the Parish who “gift-

aided” their donation, as it does make such a difference -

an extra 25p for every pound donated to the Royal British

Legion. Further poppies, large and small, 1917 - 2017

enamel poppy pins, poppy bracelets, magnetic car, van

and lorry poppies, wooden crosses, wrist bands and

wreaths, etc. are available from any of our team of collec-

tors - please just telephone John Burrows (810494), Sara-

Jane Cumming (860281), Gaye Martin (810637) or myself

(810135) and we will provide you with whatever you re-

quire. At the same time please do not hesitate to ring any

one of us to arrange collection of your completed “gift-aid”

envelopes.

N otwithstanding, our collectors will be out and about

collecting from Saturday 28th October, the National

Launch Date for the Appeal, until Remembrance Sunday.

T hank you all so much for your co-operation. Please

call me should you have any queries.

With very best wishes to you all,

Peter Cameron MC RM & AAC(V)!
