The Company:EMC Corporation (EMC) was founded in 1979 and has grown to be a Market leader ininformation data storage. EMC develops, delivers and supports the information technology(IT) industry's range of information infrastructure technologies and solutions. EMC'stechnologies and services allow their customers to manage their information in a secureenvironment.

The Challenge:EMC have a large high value, high volume manufacturing facility in Cork Ireland. Therequirement was to track and retrieve real time data to improve efficiency in an alreadyefficient facility. One key area which needed to be resolved was ensuring that the RFIDenabled solution had the ability to track assets comprising of metal and electroniccomponents.

The Solution:Picosoft tested several solutions both passive and active. The decision was to install aPassive RFID system sourced from the Mojix company (Picosoft is a Mojix partner). Inaddition to this Picosoft tested several tag types to ensure the most suitable to the EMCenvironment was established. These included on metal tags, printed battery assisted tagsand short dipole tags. An area of 100sqm was selected in the open plan manufacturingfacility to carry out our pilot. This area was densely populated with data storage cabinetswhich moved through the area as part of the production cycle. It presented a verychallenging environment for an RFID solution.

The Approach:A pilot project was set up to establish the business case and prove the technology. The pilotwas to meet all the requirements of tracking assets comprising metal and electroniccomponents. Picosoft worked closely with EMC to ensure that customer requirements werecomprehensively identified and agreed.

Picosoft designed the pilot system which would monitor the test area. A single Mojix starreader was installed in the 100sqm test area and several enodes (energy points for RFIDtags) positions were calculated and installed throughout the test area. Picosoft affixed aselection of the tags to the products in the test area.

The test area was mapped out on a grid map using visualization software. A picture of thetest area was generated. This picture linked to the Mojix receiver provided an XYZ (3-D)location point of each tagged asset as it moved through the test area.

RFID-enabled Asset Management SystemSolutions

Automated, Affordable, Asset Management

Solutions Realised benefits:The Picosoft designed system achieved its objectives of tracking assets in real time andpresenting the reported data back to a central database.Accurate recording of product movement through the manufacturing process provides thedata to enable improved business efficiency.

The Results:The system proved that Passive RFID can be used in a complex manufacturing environment toprovide localization of products. All tagged assets could be seen and located to an area of less than 30cmThe RFID technologies recommended and implemented by Picosoft worked.Though all the tags could be read the pilot and lab tests proved Omni-ID tags to have the bestresults.

Lessons learned: Complex environments require adequate upfront time for testing and identifying the mostappropriate equipment. Business case analysis in the early stages of the project was useful as it provided a keybenchmark of success after completion. The ease of use and flexibility of the system has made it easy for people working at all levelsin the organization to access asset location information through the browser on their PC.A close working partnership between the EMC project and technical teams and Picosoftplayed an essential role in the projects success.
