Regional Recovery – Data Focused Approach
During the period of 2013 to 2015 EMDC’s service area experienced the closure of four paper mills and other manufacturing businesses with over 1,500 direct manufacturing jobs lost and an estimated additional 1,700 indirect job losses. This represented nearly 20% of all manufacturing employment in the region; $184 million dollars in regional payroll; and $959 million in lost sales. This economic dislocation has been a catalyst to spur the region to action to “Re-Engineer the Region” and work to support local businesses diversification, and to attract new businesses, industries and jobs.

Data-Underpinning of Economic Re-Engineering
• The “Re-Engineering the Region” project begun by EMDC in 2015 has highlighted the need to have a local capability to mine economic and workforce data sources to support our efforts to help the region recovery.
• Establishing a set of “Data Analytics” that informed economic development, workforce development and education efforts was an essential first step to help to bring leaders and the community together to mobilize action.
