“We want to turn this around in May, andencourage people to walk more by logging theirwalks to school, on the commute to work, or eventaking the dog for a walk round the park”.

Registration for National Walking Month is nowavailable at www.livingstreets.org.uk.

Tony Armstrong, Chief Executive of Living Streetssaid: “This May, we want to get the whole of the UKbuying a ticket to stride. As part of National WalkingMonth we’ll be asking employees and school children to give walking a gofor at least a week.

"It can be as simple as walking all or part of the journey to school, steppingout of the office for a lunchtime walk, or getting off the bus a few stopsearlier on your way home from the office.

“You don’t need costly gym sessions, or marathon running attempts toget fit and active. Walking is a free and easy way to work more exercise intoyour daily routine, and logging your walks on www.livingstreets.org.uk thisNational Walking Month is a great way to get started.”

The charity KeepBritain Tidy todayreleased the resultsfrom its bigger littercount yet.And because somany volunteersparticipated, it wasable to releasespecific results forthe East Midlandstoo.

For the first time, the charityinvited volunteers to join itssurveying staff across the UK.More than 500 people went outon to the country’s streets, allowing Keep Britain Tidy torecord more than 37,000 items ofrubbish. It’s a data sample almostmore than ten times larger thanlitter counts in previous years. In the East Midlands, 41 people

signed up to count more than2,370 pieces of litter – on thestreet, in parks, on beaches orbeside rivers and canals.

Keep Britain Tidy’s chiefexecutive Phil Barton said: “Thissurvey provides us with asnapshot of what people havelittered in communities acrossthe country. It also gives morethan 2,370 reasons in the EastMidlands alone why we all needto do more to make litteringsocially unacceptable – to reducethe environmental, social andfinancial costs of this nationalproblem.”

The most littered brand in theEast Midlands was Cadbury,

followed by McDonald’s, Walkers,Coke and Fosters. Mars, ImperialTobacco, Tesco, Pepsi and Hariborounded out the top ten.

Nearly 200 pieces of Cadburyrubbish were counted, meaningit came top of the East Midlandslist with 8% of the total recordedlitter.

Coke was the most litteredbrand across the country, followed by Cadbury, Walkers,McDonald’s and Mars. Completeresults can be seen atwww.keepbritaintidy.org/littercount

“These results should be awake-up call that we all need todo more to love where we live,”Mr Barton continued. “Litter isnot just an environmentalproblem. It affects perceptions ofsafety and costs governmentnearly a billion pounds a year toclean up.

“Everyone has a role to play, including everyone who buysthese products. When you buy abottle of pop, a bag of crisp or achocolate bar, you don’t just buythe contents you buy thepackaging as well and it is yourresponsibility to dispose of itcorrectly.”

Mr Barton noted more willneed to be done: “AsGovernment cuts put pressure onlocal authority services, andimpact on their efforts to getlitterers to dispose of thingscorrectly, England could seemore litter in more places. Thatcan’t happen. It’s time for moreresponsible companies to helpmore people love more places,by joining efforts to convincetheir consumers to do the rightthing.”

He also thanked the hundredsof volunteers – from community

groups to school children – whogave up half an hour of their timeto support Keep Britain Tidy’ssurvey.

“We are very grateful to themany volunteers who took timeto give us a better idea of what isbeing littered in England. Thestrong response shows peopledo love where they live and wantmuch more to be done to cleanup our country.”

In previous years, the count wasconducted by Keep Britain Tidystaff, looking purely at town and

city centres. This resulted in fastfood being the most-littered itemby an often-significant margin.

Inviting volunteers to surveymore diverse areas resulted in abroader range of most-littereditems. The count is not scientificand has always been a snapshotof surveyed areas.

“With much more data this year, one thing is clear. Whether youuse, sell or make something, wecall do more to ensure it isdisposed of correctly,” Mr Bartonconcluded.

The 100,000th historicphotograph capturing yesteryear inDerbyshire and Nottinghamshirehas just been added to the Picturethe Past website.

The not-for-profit project also marked its tenthanniversary at an event held at Nottinghamshire CountyCouncil Archives. This delightful photograph of a WhitMarch in Arnold from 1890 was selected as themilestone image to be added to the website.

‘Picture the Past’ is a not-for-profit project, started in2002, that aims to make historic images from the library, archives and museum collections across the whole ofDerby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, available via a completely free-to-use website. Picturethe Pastís offices were founded at Heanor Library in2002, before moving to the Record Office at DerbyshireCounty Council in 2011.

Initially funded for three years with support from theHeritage Lottery Fund, the scheme is now managed andfunded by the local authorities of Derbyshire County Council,Nottinghamshire County Council together with the two citycouncil’s of Nottingham City and Derby City.

There are photographs, postcards, engravings and paintingson the website showing how life has changed in the regionover the last few hundred years giving a fascinating insightinto the work and lives of the people who lived there.

The event was attended by representatives from each of thelocal authorities as well as people who have been directlyinvolved in the project. Professor John Beckett, from theDepartment of History at the University of Nottingham whois an expert in the history of the East Midlands, gave a shortspeech about the importance of preserving historic imagesdigitally.

Picture the Past’s Project Manager, Nick Tomlinson, said: “It is wonderful that Picture The Past is now entering itssecond decade and the public interest continues year afteryear.

Our web pages currently receive around 100,000 views a month. As well as the photographs which are stocked in our collections, people contribute images which they find in attics and elsewhereto be digitised on our systems”.

property matters

Welcome to our new regularfeature where Julian Divine,Director of WhitegatesEstate Agents answers yourquestions regarding buying, selling or letting property.

Julian has twenty years experience in theindustry, all of that time based in theNottingham area.

Please feel free to email your questions [email protected]

Q: I’m moving abroad and will be renting outmy home in Nottingham. Do I need to tell mymortgage provider?

A: Yes! If your property is mortgaged on aresidential mortgage you will be breachingthe terms of the mortgage by renting theproperty out. However, if you inform the bankand request their consent to let it out and theygrant that consent then all is ok. You may haveto pay an admin fee and they may, in somecircumstances, change the interest rate thatyou are paying. It is vital you get their consentas letting without consent will mean that anytenancy created is invalid and could lead tothe bank repossessing the property andevicting the tenant, who would then have theright to sue you for any costs and distresscaused by this – so its well worth a shortphone call to the bank to prevent these hugepotential issues!

Q: We've just let a house that we inherited, andnow a friend says we should have registered thedeposit? Can you advise?

A: You should indeed have registered thedeposit (or ‘bond’ as they are more usuallyreferred to). Since April 2007, all bonds for

assured shorthold tenancies are required to beprotected in one of 3 government approvedschemes. Failure to do so could mean youhaving to pay the tenant upto 3 times theamount of the bond as a penalty for non-compliance. In addition, taking possession ofthe property can be made more difficult too ifthe correct procedure for protecting the bondhas not been followed. Registering the bondis not as simple as you may think, if you requireassistance in doing this please contactWhitegates and we will help you to get it right.

Q: Is 2013 the time to buy-to-let?

A: The rental market in the UK is growing as atightening of mortgage lending and lack ofdeposits means that fewer people can buy ahouse. This is forcing more people to rent andin some areas there is a lack of suitable rentalproperty – particularly of family homes. Yieldscan be good if you invest in the right propertyin the right area and a reputable letting agentwill be able to advise you on what type ofproperty is in short supply in their particulararea.

Kerry McKenna, 35 years old, says her size was affecting every aspect of her daily life.Since joining her local Slimming World group in Chilwell she is 4st lighter. Not only hasshe won the best prize of all – a fitter, healthier, happier future altogether – she’s alsowon the group’s Greatest Loser 2013 prize for the member who’s lost the most weight –on top of winning the Chilwell group’s Women of the Year 2012 and getting through tothe top 6 in the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire group finals last year.

Kerry McKenna says: “I feel like a new woman since losing weight – in fact, I look sodifferent that people I haven’t seen for a while say they don’t recognise me! I feel happierand healthier, I’ve got more energy and I’m much more confident now too. “Before, I lost the weight I’d pretend I didn’t care that I was bigger than other people,

but that just wasn’t true. I hated clothes shopping and walking my dogs would leave meout of breath. I felt awful. Now I just want to make up for lost time and experience all ofthe things that my weight held me back from doing.”So, after her close friend decided to become a Slimming World Consultant Kerry decided

to join her group and start her own weight loss journey, Kerry joined her local Slimming Worldgroup at Inham Nook Methodist Church, Pearson Avenue, Chilwell, She says: “Walking through those

doors was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, I was embarrassed and terrified that I was going to be the biggest personthere. But I needn’t have worried because everyone there was so very friendly and welcoming. I’ve made so many friends there and their support and

encouragement has been the best. When you have a lot of weight to lose there are many hurdles to overcome to change old ways and adopt new healthy habitsthat you can sustain for the rest of your life. I couldn’t have done it without the support of my Consultant Kerry Ward and the rest of the group. Every week they werethere with a new recipe or shopping tip and if I was struggling someone always seemed to have the perfect piece of advice.”The club’s now-famous Food Optimising plan was a surprise too: “People think slimming means going hungry, eating nothing but salad, obsessively counting every

calorie you eat and weighing or measuring everything on your plate, but it’s not like that at all at Slimming World. I love food and it’s never once felt like I was on ‘adiet’. I still enjoy all my favourite meals like burgers and chips and roast dinners but I’ve learned how to make small changes like using lean meat or low caloriecooking spray instead of oil or butter. It fits in really well with the rest of my family as well. We all enjoy the same meals and we all feel tons better for it.”

Now Kerry’s lost a total of 4st and gone from a size 18 to a size 12, she’s also more active nowadays and regularly goes to the gym and walks her two rescue dogs.Kerry Ward who runs the Chilwell Slimming World group, says: “The change we’ve seen in Kerry is amazing. She’s a huge inspiration to the other members and I hopeher success will inspire other people in Chilwell who’d like to lose weight and become happier and healthier to take action. There’s a warm welcome waiting atSlimming World.”The Chilwell group meets every Thursday at 5pm & 7pm at Inham Nook Methodist Church, Pearson Avenue, Chilwell.

STAGECOACHBEESTONCELEBRATES10 YEARS OFPERFORMING ARTS!

Saturday 23rd Marchwas a monumentalday for StagecoachBeeston as itcelebrated 10 yearssince it first opened itsdoors. Around fiftystudents and theirparents battled through unseasonal snow to perform for theeagerly awaited end of term talent show. Based loosely aroundthe X factor and Britain's got talent, it was fantastic to see so muchtalent from the students at the school. Not only did we see someexcellent singing and dancing, but we saw some extra skills suchas musical instruments, gymnastics, the 'three' dancing pony and"the cup song".

There was an excellent jovial atmosphere in the school onSaturday, and we even welcomed back the previous principal (andfounder of the Beeston school) as a guest judge on our judgingpanel.

Stagecoach Beeston is a great place to be. In July our 6-18 yearolds will be on stage at the royal concert hall. No previousperforming arts experience is required, so come and find out morenow!Stagecoach BeestonCall: 0115 851 0352 or 07581 495 025email: [email protected]/beeston

IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY TO PLAN

Planning for the future is important for all of us.Particularly if there’s a family business involved.Sadly, making sure that everything’s in placeshould you or a family member become ill orneed care or die is all too often left on the ‘to do’list. Sometimes also on the ‘too difficult’ list.Planning ahead can make life so much easier forthose who are left behind to pick up the pieces.

Making a Will is something most of us have not done yet, eventhough statistics say that as many as 100% will die one day. If youdon’t write a Will, the intestacy rules decide which family members getyour assets. Thinking through your wishes now and setting them outclearly in a Will can help to avoid expensive family disputes, andsometimes even save Inheritance Tax.

Preparing a Lasting Power of Attorney while you still have full mentalcapacity will allow a trusted family member, friend or professionaladvisor of your choice to take charge of your finances and/or makedecisions about personal welfare issues should you not be able to doso yourself.

Making gifts during your lifetime can save tax – but you need tostructure any giving carefully to get the best results.

Planning for Care Fees is something many people are concernedabout. The Government has announced that long term care bills areto be capped at £72,000 with pensioners encouraged to take outprivate insurance to cover themselves. But what will this mean foryour family? Some commentators say that thousands will still beforced to sell their homes to fund the payments.

Despite the wealth of information now available online, there is nosubstitute for getting face-to-face professional legal advice from asolicitor about your own family situation. Do beware of unregulatedwill-writing companies making outlandish promises. As in many areasof life, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. For help in writing Wills, creating powers of attorney, and

planning for the future, contact Jayne Smith at Rothera Dowsonon 0800 158 5316.

SAVE MONEY ON ALL YOUR BILLS

Reset Renewables are a local company dedicated to reducing it’scustomers energy bills. Director, John Allen has been actively involved forthe past ten years in the industry and with the formation of ResetRenewables for the past three years.“Energy costs are spiralling and a large part of your earnings are going

on fuel leaving less disposable cash for holidays or savings, we canreverse this trend by simply investing in products which will save onenergy such as LED lights and voltage optimisation these 2 products cancombined shave 20% per year off a household electricity bill. If you wish to invest and reap a steady income far greater than banks or

building societies then we offer Solar panels. Solar panels produce electricity which you are paid to produce you can

use this in your house and even heat up your hot water cylinder whileout at work, this also reduces your need to buy electricity and what youdon’t use you are paid to export.

If you look around on many houses you will see so many people havestarted producing their own electricity with solar panels, many say it’s notthe investment side that attracts them but they are getting a hold on theever increasing bills.

Later this year there is another initiative coming out ‘The renewable heatincentive’ which will allow you to replace your boiler for a heat pump. Thistakes the heat from the environment and compresses it, allowing largesavings to gas and oil. We will be able to install solar thermal panels thatheat your hot water also through the renewable heat incentive. Thegovernment are trying to reduce Co2 emissions and intern this willdramatically reduce house hold energy bills. With ever increasing fuel bills, talk to your local engineer at Reset

Renewables, we are a family company living and working around thispart of Nottingham. “I have tried not to confuse, just give the basics andon arrival at your home or office I can explain in as much detail as youwish. These technologies work and work very well, we can offermonitoring and 20 year warranties included in the cost”Why not give Reset Renewables a call to see how they can start

The kind hand of the gardener

As gardeners we may well see our role as a kindly one -looking after that which grows and nurturing it.

The wisest path to success here is to choose carefully thoseplants which reliably grow in our climate - or even chooseones that can take a slightly harsher environment just to besure.

Tactics such as avoiding high-nitrogen fertilisers as theyencourage plants to make lots of sappy leafy growth that isparticularly susceptible to damage, especially early and latein the year are also helpful.

Another tip is to avoid planting tender shrubs in Eastfacing sites as that is where the chill will generally comefrom.

When you do get planting it may well be wise to havesome gardeners wire, some thin plastic tubing and somefleece to make quick & easy cloches if a frosty period comesback to bite.

If your plants do get damaged they can still sometimesrecover so don’t despair and do try to either cover them or,if in pots, move them to shelter - either inside or in agreenhouse (did you read our article on making your ownshelter in the January issue?). Just remember that all plantshave their ‘zone’ and the UK climate comes into a surprisingrange of these zones die to our varied weather system. Asmentioned before, shelter is most helpful whether it is anatural or permanent barrier to cold winds or something moresubstantial like a greenhouse or cold frame. The humble cloche isthe gardeners friend too so use it - or maybe lose it!

A ray of sunshine

Why not plant out some bulbs ready for early summer? Like buriedtreasure they will rise up and lighten our hearts with the promise ofgrowth and colour.

Bulbs are on sale now and you should look for nice healthy andfirm bulbs with no signs of mould. The soil temperature should bearound 13c and so with our rather late spring it’s not too late toplant them around now. Place with the pointed end upwards in it’s

own hole and cover gently with soil. If you plant into pots these

can then be lifted in winter and stored, ready for next springs plantout. Bulbs just keep dividing so it’s very cost effective and fun. Youwill need to lift summer flowering bulbs as they won’t be hardy inwinter and will die off. Store them wrapped in dry paper (oldnewspapers will do) and away from frost so indoors is best.

At least by getting some bulbs in pots or the ground we havesomething to look forward to and enjoy, even as we move ontoother interesting garden planting later in the year.

As always in our gardens we have to work with nature and notagainst it which is what our path of learning is leading us to as wecontinue to make our garden bloom.

Let’s look forward to making our garden the lovely patch it was lastyear. Enjoy! ...(continues)

There’s is nothing that nature cannot ultimately dealwith - with varying degrees of help from us. This monthwe look at how we can over come the recent weatherand look forward to spending time in our gardens...

Points to watch this month:

• Beware late frosts: cover plants ifheavy frost is forecast and do not putvulnerable bedding plants out withoutcover just yet.

• Deadhead daffodils and Narcissi andfeed them with liquid feed ready fornext year. Leave the leaves on.

• Tidy & hoe spring borders before thegrowing season really takes hold andover runs you!

• Add mulch where needed again before growth blocks where you want o go withit. Your own garden compost, out of date grow bags or manure are all good.

• When the soil eventually warms up add general purpose fertiliser before coveringwith your mulch on borders, and fruit or veg patches. Don’t forget containersneed a feed too.

• Time to check those garden tools whilst we still have time: is your mower up tothe job?

• With warmer temperatures it’s also a good time to give the shed a good coat ofpreservative - go on and treat yourself to a brighter colour this year! Be aware thatfence sprayers used in the open can allow the mist to drift and cause a nuisance tosay the very least!

• Attack slugs and snails before they get chance to colonise your garden (we havecovered this pest in our August 2012 issue which you can view online).

Half price neuteringspecial offer atChurchcroft Vets. FINAL MONTH!

Churchcroft Vets have been offering half price neutering in March andthis has been extremely popular. The offer runs until the end of Aprilso this is a great time to take action to prevent unwanted puppiesand kittens.

Any age of dog or cat can be neutered although there is a preferencefor doing this younger since this avoids the possibility of unwantedpregnancies and there is some evidence that it is safer. Head vet George comments “There is a body of evidence from theUnited States and elsewhere that early neutering is associated withbetter welfare for pets. This means that anyone can take advantage ofthis offer in the next few weeks. Since we have started neuteringearlier we have noted that the patients recover more quickly from thesurgery. In addition, they do not seem to associate the surgery withan unpleasant experience in the way some older pets do.Also, we now do invisible stitching for all our neuterings so there is noneed to use those horrible bulky head collars. This makes the post-opcare much nicer for the pets and their owners!” Nurse Rhiannon adds “Neutering is also a great time to considerhaving your pet microchipped. Whilst chipping can be done in dogsand cats when they are awake it is nicer for them to have it donewhilst asleep so they don’t feel a thing”.

Pets can be dropped off for neutering from 8am in the morningallowing busy folk to fit this in around their working day.Churchcroft’s HALF PRICE neutering offer runs until the end of

April. That means cat neutering from just £23/29 and dogneutering from just £65/85.Hurry though because places are limited. Call Churchcroft on

0115 922 4855 and take advantage of this deal immediately.

This year Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland(RIBI) celebrates 10 years of supporting stroke prevention

across the UK.

Over the last decade an estimated 200,000 people have had their blood pressure checked at KnowYour Blood Pressure events hosted by Rotary with the Stroke Association. Over 30,000 people weretested in 2012; this year the hope is to reach even more as 40% of strokes could be prevented ifundiagnosed high blood pressure was identified and treated. There are 152,000 strokes in the UK every year, which works out at one every five minutes. High

blood pressure is the biggest risk factor contributing to stroke, but it has no symptoms and canaffect people of any age. 16 million people in the UK have high blood pressure yet many of themdon’t know it. If left untreated, it can increase your risk of having a stroke. To mark the anniversary the Rotary club of Wollaton Park is hosting a free Know Your Blood Pressure

event at Wollaton Co-Operative Store, Wollaton Road, on Saturday 27th April 2013 to raise awarenessabout the link between blood pressure and stroke. Measuring blood pressure is quick, simple andpainless; it is done with an inflatable cuff put on your arm. The NHS recommends that all adults havetheir blood pressure checked at least every five years. Jon Barrick, Chief Executive of the Stroke Association said; “Stroke is one of the UK’s biggest killersand leading cause of adult disability, but far too many people don’t understand it or ever think it’llhappen to them. Rotary have been a fantastic partner in hosting these events which play a vital rolein preventing stroke and letting people know their level of risk so they can take action before it’s toolate. Everyone should have their blood pressure tested at Know Your Blood Pressure events”Mike Lucas, President of the Rotary Club of Wollaton Park added, “The Know Your Blood Pressureevents have helped prevent thousands of strokes over the last ten years. Learning your bloodpressure is high can be worrying, but these events will give you advice on the simple steps you cantake to keep it under control. Healthy eating, stopping smoking and taking regular exercise will allmake a difference and reduce your risk.” For more information on stroke, call the Stroke Association helpline on 0303 3033 100 orvisit www.stroke.org.uk/kybp .

Join your local Rotary club and discover how you can make a difference. For moreinformation about Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland, visit www.ribi.org.
