    Breathing.

“Eventually, the breath, the posture, and the movement of the ngers andheart become unied and interdependent and the sound seems to happen by

itself. At this point the real work of meditation can begin. The sound isconceived in the mind, sometimes by perceiving the notation. The

conception then leaves the mind, enters the lungs and the ngers, passesthrough the bamboo as breath, exits as sound, enters the outside world andthe returns to the mind through the ears. The ngers feel the vibration of the

bamboo and the spirit is stilled. !"tand #ichardson, "hakuhachi player.$$$

Suizen is a %en &uddhist practice of meditation from blowing airthrough an instrument. The goal is to become self!reali'ed and fully aware of

every aspect of your breathing and playing. (e must understand ourbreathing, in order for us to out ade)uate amounts through the intstrument.

*ust blowing air is not enough+ thinking and more importantly comprehendingfully where our breath comes from, and how we should use it.

$$$“The actual practice of suizen is a nine!part non!se)uential series of

contemplations to be either guided through by a master, or used as a

process of self!study for the more advanced student. inding a )uiet placeand appropriate time to practice, one clears one-s mind and relaxes, ready toperceive the )ualities of a single note or the notes within a simple phrase. tis vital to not /ust improvise a long string of notes, since the idea is to becompletely aware of each note and its )ualities.

To begin the practice, after allowing about 01 seconds of silence to clearone-s mind, carefully proceed with each suggestion as you blow a singlenote. The entire thing should last at least 21 to about 34 minutes to bee5ective6
