• Bread for the World: launched in 1959 as a fund-raiser of the Protestant Regional and Free Churches
• Background: Hardship in many parts of the world as well as gratitude for the relief received in the aftermath of World War II
• Initially conceived as a one-off campaign, it quickly became a permanent fixture under the auspices of the EKD Social Service Agency
