BRAVE. AMBITIOUS. INSPIRING.OUR VICE-CHANCELLOR WILL CONTINUE TO LEAD US IN BOLD NEW DIRECTIONS.
Right from its inception as Australia’s first regional
university, UNE has consistently redefined what a university
is. UNE’s first Vice-Chancellor, Sir Robert (Bert) Madgwick,
pioneered distance education in the 1950s. Madgwick
believed the University’s job is “to find out what people want
… and never start with what the University thinks they need.”
The pioneering spirit lives on across UNE with leading
innovation in teaching design and delivery whilst researchers
test the boundaries of the unknown.
UNE now stands as the only public university to be awarded
5-stars for overall experience, on-campus and online, for the
last 13 years running*.
UNE is now looking for an ambitious Vice-Chancellor with
the courage and determination to assume Madgwick’s
mantle - to resist conformity and push beyond convention
to lead bold teaching and research that empowers people,
wherever they are, to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

UNE OverviewThe UNE ExperienceThe University of New England was the first Australian
university established outside a capital city. With a
history extending back to the 1920s, UNE has a well-
earned reputation as one of Australia’s great teaching,
training and research universities.
Today UNE is a regionally based, globally networked
university that is renowned for the quality of its
student experience and the excellence of its research.
The University offers more than 200 courses at
undergraduate, postgraduate and higher degree
research levels with options to study online or on
campus and is internationally recognised for its
innovative approach to flexible online learning.
Student numbers are on the rise, with more than
20,000 students currently enrolled. On-campus
students account for approximately 20 per cent and
international students for five per cent.
By offering students the best in terms of on-campus
living, academic support, pastoral care and social and
sporting activities, the University has consistently
maintained a five-star rating for Overall Student
Satisfaction, as published in the Good Universities
Guide. UNE has also won 46 Australian Awards for
University Teaching since 2006.
Strategic DirectionIn an ever-changing and increasingly challenging
higher education sector, the University’s Strategic Plan
2016-2020: Together we can do this lays out the plan to
deliver impactful research, provide an unparalleled
student experience, diversify income, foster digital
dominance and create a bold and innovative culture.
As the University drives towards its 2020 objectives
to become the University of Choice for students and
researchers who wish to transform their lives and build
resilient communities, it is already looking forward
to the next phase of its evolution. Work is underway
on identifying the key themes of UNE’s new strategic
plan (UNE 2025) and it is expected that the new Vice-
Chancellor will play a pivotal role in the development
and implementation of that plan.

Higher Education in AustraliaAustralia has one of the best higher education systems
in the world and Australian universities make a strong
contribution to Australia’s economic prosperity and
social wellbeing. Australia’s universities offer a unique
educational experience that fosters self-belief, rewards
independent thought and fuels inquiring minds.
University education added an estimated $140 billion
to the Australian economy in 2014. Our universities
educated more than 1.3 million Australian and
international students in 2016 and directly employed
120,000 full-time equivalent staff. The education of
international students is Australia’s 3rd largest export
behind iron ore and coal.
Australia’s universities prepare people for the
highly skilled jobs of tomorrow, and to be leaders in
developing and adapting new knowledge to revitalise
our economy, strengthen our society and tackle the
many problems we will face.
All Australian higher education institutions are
continuously monitored and reviewed by government,
and by industry and professional bodies to ensure that
the high quality of courses, research, staff, pedagogy
and services is maintained at or above international
standards.
Australia’s universities make a strong contribution to
Australia’s economic prosperity and social well being.
▪ Universities have more than one million enrolled
students.
▪ Universities employ over 100,000 staff.
▪ Universities are significant contributors to their
local communities by providing local employment
opportunities, research, industry collaboration,
building vital infrastructure and through local
community and sporting grants.
▪ Australia’s regional universities play a vital role in
supporting regional economies.
▪ University research stimulates innovation and
delivers solutions to the economic, social and
demographic challenges facing the nation.
▪ The rate of return on publicly-funded research is
generally between 20 and 60 per cent.

LocationArmidale, NSWLocated roughly midway between Sydney and
Brisbane, Armidale is a sophisticated urban centre
located in a picturesque rural setting on the doorstep
of some of the most scenic national parks in Australia,
if not the world. With a population of about 30,000,
the city of Armidale enjoys a mild climate, with warm
summers, glorious springs and crisp winters; in
autumn the city turns crimson and gold.
A strong element of growth in Armidale’s population
comes with professional or business people with
school-aged children choosing a location with cultural
vibrancy, superior educational facilities, a strong
sporting culture and a healthy outdoors lifestyle.
The central business district features cafés, markets,
and hosts regular cultural events and festivals.
Shopping centres, museums, parks, restaurants
and a cinema are just a short walk or bus ride away.
With a high level of business activity in the CBD, a
growing education sector, and a strong rural economy,
employment in Armidale is quite strong.
The fact that Armidale is home to UNE, an institution
that has attracted students and faculty from across the
globe since its establishment as a university college in
1938, is a major reason for the sophisticated feel about
the place. With the University, TAFE, four prestigious
private schools as well as public schools all achieving
results, Armidale is also widely known as a centre of
education excellence. UNE’s Armidale Campus was
recently judged by Times Higher Education in the top
10 most beautiful universities in Australia.
It comes as no surprise to find there’s a lively
appreciation of the arts here. The New England
Conservatorium, New England Regional Art Museum,
Hoskins Centre, Aboriginal Cultural Centre and
Keeping Place, the University and a talented crowd
of local and visiting musicians, artists, actors and
enthusiasts ensure that the calendar is full of events
and festivals.
