Let your labels talk ... ... about your brand and imagePET bottles dominate the beve-

rages market. Water and soft

drinks in particular reach the con-

sumer almost exclusively in plastic

bottles, except in restaurants.

B&B has accordingly expan-

ded its range of label papers

for PET bottles. The NiklaPET,

Everyone in the labels business has

faced violent headwinds in recent

months. This has taken its toll,

and called for remedial action. We

must, however, strive to ensure

that we emerge from this crisis

stronger than ever. That applies to

every one of us.

The crisis has highlighted weak-

nesses we must address. But it has

also shown which of our strengths

help us to succeed even under dif-

ficult conditions.

B&B has made significant changes

in order to expand its role as lea-

ding manufacturer of label papers

and flexible packaging papers.

The principal focus bas been on

how to enhance the benefits we

provide for our customers. In this

issue of BrandNews we report on

matters such as how we will incre-

ase our efficiency, making us even

stronger in our core business. One

element is the process of reorgani-

zation in the company.

A papermaking machine that was

no longer producing profitably

has been decommissioned. Costs

are consequently being critically

reviewed throughout the compa-

ny, including staff, and changes

made.

New, attractive products will complement our range

The new NiklaPET REC and Nikla-

PET WEB grades complement our

range of labels for wrap-around

labelling of PET bottles. The feed-

back so far in the extensive beve-

rages media has been extremely

encouraging.

Sustainability is a factor for success in the crisis ...

Long-term commitment is the

only way out of this crisis; the-

re is no quick fix. The high level

of motivation at B&B runs like a

continuous thread through all our

initiatives. As it says in B&B‘s Mis-

sion Statement, »Corporate Social

Responsibility, or CSR for short,

stands for responsible, compre-

hensive corporate behaviour in

our field of business (market), in-

cluding aspects relating to ecology

(environment) and relations with

employees (workplace) and dialo-

gue with the parties involved (sta-

keholders). Sustainable operation

has nothing to do with short-term

self-interest, but considers the

needs of future generations.«

The Golden Label Award 2010 ...

is a good example of sustainabi-

lity in action at B&B. This impor-

tant event provides a platform for

promoting the long-term compe-

titiveness of paper labels, B&B‘s

core business. It provides the ne-

cessary international showcase for

new developments throughout

the value-added chain, involving

printers, designers and marketing

experts.

The new issue of our BrandNews

provides an overview of the miles-

tones in the development of our

market segment. We also feel it

is right for us to encourage each

other. Only a mind free of fear can

develop new ideas, be creative,

and be convinced ….

….yes, we can!

NiklaPET WEB - the natural label

paper for reel-fed wrap-around

labelling satisfies the most exac-

ting demands. With a grammage

of only 65 g per square metre,

weight has successfully been re-

duced by more than 20%, with

no compromises in terms of dis-

pensing rate and reliability. This

weight reduction achieves signifi-

cant savings for both printers and

bottlers.

Many bottlers have requested B&B

to provide an ecologically sound

label material comparable in price

to thin film. This paper label must

also satisfy the demands of reel-

fed wrap-around labelling.

The engineers at B&B examined

these requirements in detail, and

after extensive test runs on va-

rious printing and labelling ma-

chines, have launched NiklaPET

WEB just in time for the Drinktec

2009 trade fair.

Ecological considerations in the development of label papers

B&B canvassed customers in a

comprehensive Internet survey in

2009 (n = 183), to determine their

opinion on the subject of ecology.

What criteria are particularly im-

portant to customers?

The options were:

n Low carbon footprint (CO2

emissions)

n Sustainable use of water in pro-

duction (H2O footprint)

n Recyclable label material

n Use of recycled fibres in the la-

bel

The use of recycled fibres in the

label emerged as the highest pri-

ority in this survey (74% thought

this characteristic was particularly

important).

The survey covered printers, con-

verters, branded goods manufac-

turers and advertising agencies.

Printers and branded goods ma-

nufacturers attached particular

importance to this requirement.

Customer requirements met, new NiklaPET REC product launched

In response to customer wishes,

B&B has positioned the new Ni-

klaPET REC grade in the market,

a product comprising two thirds

recycled fibres. The remaining

third is made from pulp derived

exclusively from naturally renew-

able sources, sawmill waste and

thinnings, and is accordingly PEFC

certified.

This exemplary label paper can be

used for both cut labels and reel-

fed labelling. It is thus an excellent

complement to the proven Nikla-

PET paper that has been available

for some years.

There is increasing pressure for

less resource-intensive packaging

that is ecologically sustainable.

This also emerges from the cu-

stomer survey carried out by B&B,

which received a gratifying level

of response. Many customers in-

dicated their willingness to test

run new materials on their plant

with B&B, which has encouraged

us to devote even more resources

and effort to new developments

so we can better satisfy current

demands.

Satisfied customers are the best

foundation for sustained success-

ful operation of a company. That

is why B&B conducted a compre-

hensive online customer satisfac-

tion survey in November last year.

More than 100 customers from all

over the world participated, from

376 questioned.

This response was a success in

itself, since it shows the close

connection between B&B and its

customers, and that they are wil-

ling to give feedback. Empirical

data from similar surveys shows

that B&B’s survey achieved almost

twice the normal response level in

comparable cases.

What B&B wanted to know from its customers

How is B&B’s product quality as-

sessed compared to similar pro-

ducts of other manufacturers in

the label and packaging paper

sector?

More than 94% of those questi-

oned indicate that B&B products

are constantly or usually better!

The image of B&B is mainly descri-

bed as reliable, high-quality and

responsible.

Further core conclusions from the survey

The most important sources of in-

formation mentioned were in the

great majority of cases personal

contact and B&B Brand News, fol-

lowed by B&B events.

A high level of satisfaction is also

evident from the question as to

the competence, friendliness,

speed, reliability and accessibility

of B&B staff.

In response to the question as to

prompt delivery, 96% of replies

confirmed B&B’s high level of deli-

very compliance.

The survey mainly rates B&B staff

as very good at solving technical,

commercial and logistical que-

stions.

The respondents also rated B&B

highly in the area of complaints:

80% of those surveyed who have

complained to B&B were satisfied

with the outcome.

The result of the study is gra-

tifying. It rates B&B as a star pupil,

something all the staff at B&B can

be justly proud of.

B&B also takes the critical com-

ments from customers seriously,

and has compiled a 2009 action

plan in the context of its ISO 9001

quality assurance system. Becau-

se it is not just about knowing

that you are »good«; B&B also

wants to constantly improve, with

the aim of constantly enthusing its

customers.

Desertification, disrupted weather patterns, and smog alerts in

cities may leave some people unconcerned when they occur far

away, with no direct personal impact. But global warming is hap-

pening on our planet, and our planet is close to collapse as a re-

sult, as the WWF 2006 Living Planet Index clearly illustrates.

Sustainability, or Greenwashing? What should we do?

B&B considers itself responsi-

ble for making its own produc-

tion processes as sustainable as

possible.

The second and no less important

aspect concerns the products we

sell. There has been much chan-

ge in recent years. Some of what

is sold can only be described as

hazardous, and will pollute our

environment for generations to

come. Unfortunately, some of

these products with no real claim

to sustainability even bear an envi-

ronmental seal of approval.

»Greenwashing« is all the fashion.

There is a Blue Angel, a TÜV en-

vironment certificate, an EU en-

vironment logo, quality seals and

certification marks from private

organisations. All is not what it

seems.

The criteria for what is sustaina-

ble and what is not have changed

too; a rethink is currently under

way. Reduce, reuse, recycle - and

regulate, these are the four prin-

ciples that are often still anchored

in people’s thinking.

New ideas already implemented

Sustainable label paper production

This scenario shows we already

need 1.4 planets Earth to satisfy

our hunger for energy and raw

materials. But since we only have

one planet Earth, we can count

on the fingers of one hand how

long this system can continue to

function.

But: Less bad is not good

Viewed from the outside, this

system is very good, but it is not

a success because it is not tho-

roughgoing. It merely slows

down the process of destruction,

which is often even more harmful

than a rapid process that ultima-

tely leaves niches for exploiting

new opportunities. In considering

the issue of sustainability, B&B has

addressed both »eco-efficiency

analysis« (EEA) and the »eco-ef-

fectiveness requirements«.

Eco-efficiency analysis determines

the overall costs and ecological

costs from the customer’s point

of view throughout the life cycle.

The strengths of eco-efficiency

analysis lie in its simple, powerful

presentation of results.

The principle underlying the eco-

efficient approach is »waste is

food«. Many natural processes

waste both energy and material.

Plants and animals produce large

quantities of »waste«. They are

not eco-efficient. But they cer-

tainly are eco-effective, because

they form part of a sustainable

system that reuses every scrap of

waste, for example as fertilizer.

Braungart describes this principle

graphically using the example of a

cherry tree:

For millions of years nature has

been producing profligately, but

effectively. A cherry tree produces

thousands of blossoms and fruits,

without harming the environ-

ment. On the contrary, as soon as

they fall to the floor, they become

nutrients for animals, plants and

soil in the vicinity.«

(Braungart_McDonough). Produc-

tion processes can be effective in

the same sense, if they generate

materials that can be used in other

production processes.

Paper is derived from sustainable raw materials

Products such as paper labels

make an important contribution to

establishing sustainable economic

cycles. Labels derived from wood

are ideally suited for recycling. Pa-

per recycling has the advantage of

being a well established and func-

tional economic cycle.

One particularly important consi-

deration is that paper labels are

biodegradable in biological waste-

water purification.

In 2009 B&B conducted a sustai-

nability study of paper labels com-

pared to OPP film, with a team of

experts from the University of Na-

tural Resources and Applied Life

Sciences, Vienna.

The study was double checked

by the independent institute SER

(Sustainable Europe Research In-

stitute), by Dr Stefan Guljum

This study involved collecting a

series of environmental indicators

from the B&B plants in Austria and

Slovenia, and comparing them to

the analytical values for plastic

film labels.

The results are impressive.

Whichever factors you adduce,

paper labels emerge as the clear

favourite in terms of both eco-

efficiency data and eco-effective-

ness considerations.

Gotten off with a slap on the wristThe situation in the Austri-an paper industry is likely to ease off soon: »Domestic companies are well-placed – especially those in Austrian hands«, says Wolfgang Pfarl, President of Austropapier, referring to Mayr-Melnhof, Heinzel, Prinzhorn and Ron-do Ganahl. The sector’s half-yearly figures give rise to some hope: negative growth has slowed down from 20 to 16 percent. »We have rea-ched the bottom – and made a successful landing.«

B&B shuts down paper machine for uncoated graphic papers

B&B was shutting down pa-per machine 4 in the Papirni-ca Vevče mill in Slovenia at the end of June 2009. This was a small papermaking machine producing about 20,000 tonnes of uncoated graphic paper a year.

Paper machine 4 was uncom-petitive in the long term on the graphic uncoated paper market, which is dominated by very large, high-speed machines, most of which are integrated.

The present economic situ-ation has forced B&B to un-dertake some restructuring, and this step moves towards concentration on the core business - label papers and flexible packaging papers. These core segments will not be affected by the shut-down.

Conclusion

As consumers we do not need to

constantly wrestle with our con-

science, berating ourselves as a

plague on this earth. Paper is a

useful material that serves as the

nutrient base for many organis-

ms. This fits well with the Crad-

le2Cradle principle, a process of

constant renewal. Not everything

is perfect, but the results of our

performance in recent years pro-

ve that much progress has been

made towards »making good«.

The much discussed issue of the carbon footprint is explored in this

instance by comparing the two materials.

Brigl&Bergmeister, a business

B&B logo modernisedThe corporate design guide-lines of B&B have been up-dated as at the beginning of 2009. From now on, our focus on labels and flexible packaging papers, which we have inten-sified in recent years, will be reflected in our logo design as well.

The B&B logo has been re-designed and is now a real word and design mark: the B&B letters sit on a turquoise bar, uniting them to form a unique mark.

This modernisation was ef-fected in coordination with the other members in our corporate group, the Prinz-horn Holding, so that the group companies’ individu-al logos reflect their shared identity. We proceeded very carefully when modifying our logo, making sure that our corpo-rate values continue to be represented consistently.

The book runs to 224 pages, including

virtually all the presentation documents.
