THE LOGO This is the Bryn Mawr College logo.

It is strong and decisive while being classic and elegant. A Humanist infuence in the letterforms pay homage to the stonework around campus.

THE LOGO The Bryn Mawr logo was carefully created using proportional spacial considerations. Never tamper with the logo of any of its elements.

The outermost dotted line indicates the minimum amount of clear space the logo requires. No external graphics should ever come closer to the logo than this line.

Piper Sledge studies gender and the body across a range of social contexts. Her most recent study of interactions between patients and health care providers focuses on patients who trouble the standards of care for breast and gynecological cancers.

Sledge conducted narrative interviews with transgender men about preventive gynecological care, cisgender men about being diagnosed and treated for breast cancer, and cisgender women who opted for bilateral mastectomies not deemed medically necessary and who opted out of breast reconstruction. Taken together, the experiences of research participants show how normative ideas about gender shape medical care.

Sledge is expanding on her research into gendered embodiment through a new project on the experiences of multiracial and transgender people as a means by which to explore the ambiguities of intersecting structures of race and gender in contemporary US society.

“What brought me to Bryn Mawr,” says Matthew Jameson, “was the combination of a liberal arts environment and the many resources it ofers graduate students—funding opportunities, the feld school, its rich Special Collections, and the chance for cross-disciplinary collaboration.”

Collaboration plays a vital role in Jameson’s research. “By looking at the provenance of imported pottery,” he explains, “I’m trying to understand the dynamics of ancient trade routes in the Arabian peninsula.”

To do that, he’s teamed up with Bryn Mawr geologists to determine the geochemical composition of the pottery and the production methods used to make it.

For Jameson, that culture of collegiality defnes his Bryn Mawr experience. “The faculty is supportive, both in the classroom and outside of the classroom,” he says, “and our cohort has a great group dynamic. If you have a question about a topic, everyone is happy to help.”

MATTHEW JAMESON ARCHAEOLOGY

At Bryn Mawr, Doug Gisewhite’s research focused on the atomic-level reactions in the cofactor of molybdenum enzymes. Today, he’s in a Princeton University lab working at the intersection of organic, inorganic, and biological chemistry—and conducting research with applications in the pharmaceutical industry.

Gisewhite chose Bryn Mawr for the one-on-one interaction. “For someone looking for that kind of experience,” he says, “there’s no better place. The professors make time for every one of their students.”

“And Bryn Mawr has everything you need—and if it isn’t physically there, you have direct access to sophisticated equipment through collaborations with other labs.”

Plus, Gisewhite received hands-on classroom experience: “You teach side by side with the professor and get to build a syllabus and design a class. I really loved having the opportunity to guide and mentor undergraduates.”

DOUG GISEWHITE, PH.D. ’17 CHEMISTRY

Ever since elementary school, Olivia McAuley has loved astronomy. “Knowing that people have been to the moon and others are living and working in the International Space Station amazes me,” she says.

As a graduate student in Bryn Mawr’s physics program, McAuley focuses on astrophysics and the mysteries of galaxy evolution.

“Theories show that there shouldn’t be any stars in the outer disks,” she explains, “ yet we fnd these very old stars there. How did they get there? Why are they there? That’s where my research is heading.”

A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, McAuley values Bryn Mawr’s intimate scale: “Transitioning into a smaller school like Bryn Mawr has been great. You don’t see a lot of women in physics programs at large universities,” she says, “and I love interacting with the undergraduates and mentoring them here.”

OLIVIA McAULEY PHYSICS

“The doors that are open to you as a Bryn Mawr student are many and they’re wide,” says Charlie Kuper.

Kuper should know. As a Bryn Mawr graduate student, he received three fellowships—one in Cappadocia, Turkey, and two from Harvard’s Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection—and the year after graduating, he had a joint appointment at Haverford and Bryn Mawr.

Then he landed what he calls “one of the postdocs” for Latinists—the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae fellowship, which fnds him in Munich to work on the oldest Latin-to-Latin dictionary. “I’m living the dream right now,” he says.

For Kuper, it was the collegiality of the Bryn Mawr community that drew him in. “You get great support from faculty who help with the intangibles like introducing you to people, helping build your profle when you’re job- hunting. I couldn’t have asked for anything more. In fact, I’ve gotten more than I could have dreamt of.”

Now, Jie Shi has produced the frst interpretation of that royal mausoleum. Through a detailed analysis of the architectural, archaeological, and textual record, he argues that the tombs serve as an expression of the Western Han political ideology, one based on Huang-Lao and Confucian thought.
