Dear Friends,
“Christ is Risen!”
“He is Risen Indeed!”
That was what we proclaimed together on Easter morning,
amidst both of our joyous worship services. In fact we didn’t just
proclaim it, we shouted it! With great joy and excitement we
made our voices heard! Unfortunately, I must have shouted a bit
too loudly, because I lost my voice! Those of you that were at the
second service know that my voice started out weak and by the children’s sermon was completely gone! Talk about
terrifying moments for pastors . . . losing your voice on Easter Sunday during worship has to rank right up there amongst
the most terrifying! Thankfully with the help of our terrific Parish Associate Jim Morris I managed to get through the
morning and even managed to deliver my sermon—even if it was just a whisper.
Other than losing my voice, everything else was absolutely fantastic! It was a beautiful morning to celebrate the
resurrection! I want to thank everyone who helped contribute to our wonderful Easter worship and to all of our Holy
Week festivities. The week started with a wonderful Palm Sunday celebration, where we waved our palms high and sang
our hosannas! Then our confirmation class did a terrific job raising and dressing the cross. On Maundy Thursday we
gathered for Care to Share where we celebrated the Lord’s Supper and lovingly packed 300 lunches for NORWESCAP!
Our Tenebrae service on Good Friday was amazingly powerful as we remembered together the sacrifices of our Lord.
Our readers and the Chancel Choir did a terrific job leading us through the story of the crucifixion in a powerful and
meaningful way. We were also blessed with some very talented soloists, and of course the awesome leadership of Nerva!
And with the exception of my lost voice, our Easter morning was absolutely wonderful . . . two joyful services, lots of
terrific music, smiling children, an Easter egg hunt, and much, much more!
I simply cannot thank everyone enough . . . thank you, thank you, thank you! Our church is truly blessed with so
many talented, dedicated and faithful leaders and members that it doesn’t even matter if the pastor loses his voice . . . for
we all lead together in proclaiming that “Christ is Risen!”
In Christ,
Pastor Nick

Baptism
This month we rejoice with those who are celebrating their baptism anniversary. It was in May that Ashley May Folmar,
Alexis Rose Gunderman, James Monroe Hansen, Charlotte Taylor Hatch, Nora Lynn Hatch, Lauren Elizabeth Lawson
Koeller, Kelsey Ann Pardonner, Keira Nicole Vogel, and Sarah Rose Wardach became children of God through the
sacrament of baptism. Congratulations and blessings to you all!

Thanks
Dear family of Alexandria First,
On behalf of the late Curtis L. Schick we would like to thank Reverend Nicholas Hatch for his kind and heartfelt message
was well as the deacons—and especially Carol Van Norman—for preparing and serving refreshments after the memorial
service. Also thank you to Brad Bondor for his music and Lois and Doug Bondor for their efforts in arranging the picture
display as well as ushering. We did so appreciate the many cards and prayers you sent. They were and are a great comfort.
God bless you all.
Sincerely,
The Curtis L. Schick family
Curtis Schick, a long-time member of Alexandria Church, passed away March 28 at the
Country Arch in Union Township. He was 91. Curtis was born October 10, 1923 in Little
York and lived most of his life in Alexandria Township. He graduated from Rutgers
University (presently Cook College) and over the years worked as an editor and realtor.
Curtis volunteered with many groups; some of them included the North Hunterdon Rotary
Club, Hunterdon’s Visiting Health and Services, American Red Cross, United Way of
Hunterdon, and Alexandria Township Planning Board.
Curtis is the son of Herman and Anna Schick and is survived by his beloved wife of 67
years Marian, his three sons, and many grand- and great grand-children. A celebration of
life was held April 18 at the church. Our Christian sympathy is extended to Curtis’ family
and all his loved ones.
Annual Spring Congregational Meeting
This year we are going to try something different. Our spring congregational meeting will be a part of our “Ministry
Appreciation Sunday” on June 7th. During worship you will hear about the work of our different ministry teams as each
presents a short synopsis of their work over the previous year. Then immediately following worship we will hear and act on
the reports of the Nominating and Auditing teams. After this short meeting we will gather in Fellowship Hall to continue
celebrating all of the many ministries of our church over refreshments and fellowship. Please put June 7th on your calendar
and plan to attend! And also remember to pick up a copy of your spring congregational report the week prior.

Care-to-Share Update
“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of
these brothers of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25:40 Thank you for helping with this year’s Care-to-Share program that
benefited NORWESCAP in Phillipsburg. Our congregation partnered
with Shop Rite to donate hundreds of food items to fill their need. The
youth of our church gathered on Palm Sunday to uniquely decorate
lunch bags and prayer cards. Thirty friends of our church assembled
350 complete lunches on Maundy Thursday with the remaining food
(all totaling 684 pounds!) donated to NORWESCAP so they could
create more. We pray those who received our lunches found them
uplifting and comforting. How blessed we are to have a caring congregation to reflect God’s love and glorify His name by
serving others.
NORWESCAP’s mission is to improve the lives of families in need in Northwest New Jersey by providing programs and
education that foster self-sufficiency. The food bank aids in the relief of hunger by distributing over 2,000,000 pounds of
food annually to more than 120 pantries, shelters, soup kitchens, on-site feeding programs, child care centers, senior centers,
and programs for the disabled in Hunterdon, Sussex, and Warren counties. They rely on hundreds of volunteers and
thousands of generous donations from individuals, corporations, and private foundations.
Gift Card Fund Raiser

Christian Education Wrap Up
Schedule
Sunday, May 17 marks the last day of our church’s Sunday school classroom program for
this academic year but the faith-filled fun continues for the children of our church and the
local community. Mark your calendars for these exciting plans coming up:
Confirmation Sunday May 24
Graduating Seniors Recognition June 7
Senior High Mission Trip, Millersville, Maryland the week of July 4
Vacation Bible School, Frenchtown Presbyterian Church the week of July 20
Summer Fun for the Little Ones
Children are invited to actively participate in worship through the summer months. But should you need it, nursery care
will be available to occupy the little ones during the worship service.
Nursery (birth to age 3)
Our nursery is a relaxed setting with books and toys for the children to enjoy under the careful supervision of gentle
volunteers. Thanks to our sound system volunteers can listen to a live feed of the worship service. Adult and teen helpers
are needed. Opportunities are available for just one Sunday or many.
The Christian Year: May
Ascension Day
Ascension Day is May 14. The story of Christ’s Ascension is found in Acts 1:1-11 where
Jesus appears to the disciples and speaks to them about the Kingdom of God. He instructs
them to wait for the coming of the Holy Spirit, who will make them into witnesses “to the
end of the earth.” After this Jesus was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.
The Ascension is a guarantee that we will all find resurrection eventually in Christ.
Pentecost
Pentecost is on May 24 this year. It marks the birth of the Christian church by the power
of the Holy Spirit. As the apostles were celebrating the Jewish harvest festival, a sound like that of a rushing wind filled the
house and tongues of fire descended and rested over each of their heads. This was the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on
human flesh promised by God through the prophets. The disciples were then empowered to proclaim the gospel of the risen
Christ and went out into Jerusalem preaching to the crowds.
Trinity Sunday
Trinity Sunday this year will be celebrated on May 31 when we proclaim the mystery of our faith in the triune God: Father,
Son and Holy Spirit, One-in-Three and Three-in-One. Unlike other festivals in the church’s liturgical calendar, Trinity
Sunday centers on a doctrine of the church, rather than an event. It celebrates the unfathomable mystery of God’s being as
Holy Trinity. It is a day of adoration and praise of the one, eternal, incomprehensible God. In celebrating Trinity Sunday,
we remember that every Lord’s Day is consecrated to the triune God.

Presbyterian Signs and Symbols
Liturgical Colors
Liturgical colors orient us to the season of the church year and help to engage the
sense of sight in worship. White symbolizes days and seasons of joy and mark pivotal
events in the life of Christ. Red symbolizes the work of the Holy Spirit and the
sacrifices of martyrs. Purple designates a season of penitence and preparation, such as
Lent.
But this arrangement was not always the case. For the first thousand years of the
church’s history, little thought was given to liturgical color. White vestments (robes)
were most common, with more elaborate vestments and paraments (colored cloths
displayed on the lectern) reserved for important festivals. The 12th through 16
th
centuries brought localized experiments with liturgical color, but no standard practices
prevailed until 1570, when the Roman Catholic Church established a normative
sequence of colors to accompany the church calendar. Calvinists in the 16th century
avoided these guidelines, however, preferring black vestments. The past two centuries
have seen a resurgence in the use of liturgical colors.
Run with the Lebanon Reformed Church
Saturday, May 2
Lebanon Reformed Church will host a 5-K Run/1-Mile Walk to benefit
Hunterdon Hospice. You may register at www.itsyourrace.com. All proceeds will
benefit the Hospice. The church is also looking for sponsors, so if you would like
your company’s name or logo on the race shirt please contact Pastor Tom Jones as
soon as possible at 908-236-6176.
For many reasons, patients with a serious or incurable illness decide to stop
treatment and testing in exchange for improved comfort and quality of life.
Hunterdon Hospice provides a bundle of services to support patients and their
families during this transition.
Volunteers are an essential part of the Hunterdon Hospice team. They are the
cornerstone of hospice care and provide a lifeline to the community for patients
and their families. They experience moments of humor, laughter, and friendship
and patients teach them about life and how to live with courage, dignity, and hope.
To volunteer your time, please contact Hunterdon Hospice at 788-6600.

The Glue that Holds Us Together
Per capita is a set amount of money per member that congregations pay to the Presbyterian Church USA. It’s been
described as “part of the glue that holds Presbyterians together.” It funds such expenses as General Assembly meetings,
judicial and legislative services required by the PCUSA Constitution, the compilation of annual statistics pertaining to
congregations and finances, and similar expenses. Per capita is not mission giving. Per capita is operational money needed
to keep the governing bodies of the PCUSA functioning.
This year Alexandria’s assessment is $30 per person. We invite you to voluntarily pay the per capita assessment for
yourself, your spouse, and each confirmed child living at home. Our church is obligated for and pays $7,290 regardless of
the amount we receive in voluntary contributions. Please remember to include “per capita” and your envelope number on
the memo line of your check and thank you for your help.
Remembering Memorial Day
May 25, 2015
Holy God, as we remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we
enjoy every day, we think of how they have followed in the footsteps of your son, our
Savior, Jesus Christ. Please hold our servicemen and women in your strong arms. Cover them
with your sheltering grace and your presence as they stand in the gap for our protection.
We also remember the families of our troops. We ask for your unique blessings to fill their
homes, and we pray your peace, provision, and strength will fill their lives. May the members
of our armed forces be supplied with courage to face each day and may they trust in your mighty power to accomplish each
task. In the name of Jesus, amen.

Include Alexandria Church in Your Plans
Estate Planning
Did you know that 6 in 10 Americans don’t have a will, and fewer than 20% of those 6
include a charitable bequest? Like many who have given to our church over the years,
you’ve probably been nourished by being a part of the church community. It’s a privilege
to give back to the church that has been such a big part of family life. Bequest gifts have
the power to impact future generations in the same way. It’s easy to include the church in your will and still provide for
loved ones. Your church family has been a blessing to you throughout your lifetime and an integral part of your spiritual
journey. But when it comes time to update your estate plans, will you consider including Alexandria Church in your plans?
Getting to Know our Teams
“If anyone serves, they should do
so with the strength God provides.”
This committee helps direct and encourage members and visitors to reach out with the love and welcome of Jesus. It
organizes evangelism programs which are a specific and deliberate response plan for greeting visitors as well as
the “Exploring Membership” program for potential new members.
A dedicated team of E&M members lovingly provides an opportunity for you to linger and chat after each worship
service by providing refreshments in Fellowship Hall.
On the administrative side, this team organizes the membership care essential to the church with the administration of the
rolls and the coordination of member care by Session elders. They oversee our fellowship pads and warmly greet visitors.
On the fellowship side, they schedule diverse fellowship activities and coordinate with the other ministry teams for
refreshments and meals for church functions.
Evangelism and Membership hosts the annual church picnic and other occasional events that include all generations.
They cook, stir, and bake the delicious meals that precede our annual winter and spring congregational meetings. And they
keep tabs on our kitchen supplies to make sure utensils, napkins, coffee, and so on are always well-stocked.
It is the E&M Ministry Team that coordinates the lovely luncheons held before each Exploring Membership class as well
as facilitates this event.
We are grateful for their essential and often “behind-the-scenes” care they provide our congregation.

Act 2:1-4
“When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And
suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled
the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared
among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the
Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.”

“Benediksyon” Means “Blessings”
In Haitian, the word for blessings is benediksyon and that’s just what our mission team delivered during this month’s
visit to Fond Pierre, Haiti. The Alexandria Presbyterian Church Living Waters for the World crew has returned from a brief
visit to Haiti. Nancy Smith, Karl Nielsen, and Charlie Tiedeman traveled to the village of Fond Pierre to confirm the
operation of the water filter system that was installed in February 2013. The village priest Father Roderick welcomed them.
This visit was part of our covenant to assure the sustainability of the system. Praise the Lord that they found an enthusiastic
operation of the system by the local team. The Fond Pierre team is selling clean water to those who can afford to pay for it
and providing for those who cannot. This was our final visit, but we will be in contact with Fond Pierre in the future via
email.
Our team also visited the village of Marche Canard. This is the new parish of Father Malherbe who was the priest in
Fond Pierre when they first installed the water system. He and his parish also warmly welcomed our traveling trio. You
can visit our church’s website to see some pictures of this trip that yielded so many benediksyon.
Knots of Love
Contact Alice Hansen
We have 7 soft colorful caps on our Knots of Love section on the bulletin
board! We’re off to a great start! Please stop by the board, located outside the
choir room, to see our creations and get more information on approved yarns and
cap patterns. As the weather warms up, some Knots of Love knitters and crocheters switch from making warm, acrylic-blend
caps to creating lighter weight, cotton blend caps. There is a “Knots of Love approved cotton yarn list” for crafters who
would like to make the yarn change for spring and summer caps. Approved acrylic yarn caps are always needed, so keep
making those if you aren’t ready to buy new cotton yarn.
Also, we are looking for donations of new cotton or acrylic yarn from the “approved yarn lists” (posted on the bulletin
board). If you don’t knit or crochet but would like to help out, please drop your donation of yarn off in the Knots of Love
box by the bulletin board.
Thank you for your continued support of our mission to offer comfort, caring, and prayers to people receiving
chemotherapy treatments. As always, if anyone has a need for caps, please take some from our bulletin board.

The Weather Vane and Christianity
In the 9th century the pope decreed that every church in Europe should have a rooster or cock on its
dome or steeple. It would serve as a reminder of Jesus’ prophecy that the cock would not crow the
morning after the Last Supper until Peter had denounced Jesus 3 times (Luke 22:34). Because of this
story, weather-cocks have topped church steeples for centuries in Europe and America.
