PROGRAM OUTLINE

.

THE ABILITY TO ENGAGE CLIENTS SHOULD GO BEYOND GOOD LISTENING SKILLS AND VALIDATION TECHNIQUES.Research has consistently indicated that successful early engagement and a positive client-practitioner alliance are the strongest and most reliable predictors of positive client outcomes, both short-term and long-term.This workshop will provide you with a tool box full of techniques useful in creating a high quality interpersonal environment to suit the unique needs of each individual client. Dr Short will highlight how, in an age dominated by artificial electronic connection, the ability to establish meaningful face-to-face relationships with our clients is at the core of health and healing.Often the necessary strategy for working with clients who are hard to engage is co-regulation, an approach that doesn’t depend on words but rather on a brain-to-brain neurobiological synchronicity that relies on the therapist’s attunement to implicit emotional and somatic communication.

Dramatically improve your clinical outcomes and effectiveness. Learn how to increase your client base. Engage clients’ own inner resources in the process of change. Dramatically reduce client drop-out rate.

INTRODUCTION › Why relationships are more than a vehicle for the delivery

of technique. › The problem with one-size-fi ts-all approaches to relating. › Why the earliest dynamics of contact can determine the

success or failure of therapy.THE ROLE OF COMPLEMENTARITY IN RELATIONSHIPS AND THE IMPORTANCE OF THE SPLIT SECOND ASSESSMENT

› Knowing what to look for during the fi rst few seconds of interaction.

› Making sense of body movement & other nonverbal reactions. › Meeting an individual rather than a diagnosis or disorder. › Skill Development Activity: learn surprising information about

your own ability to read people.THERAPEUTIC ALLIANCE FORMATION

› It is counter-productive to challenge foundational elements of the client’s belief system.

› Verifi cation of self-understandings is crucial during the early stages of relationship formation.

› Recognising when praise or positive affi rmation may jeopardise the relationship.

› Verifi cation is at times delivered in the form of confrontation.UNDERSTANDING THE BRAIN TO BRAIN INTERPERSONAL DYNAMICS OF AFFECT ATTUNEMENT

› Synchronise with the client’s emotional experiences. › Recognising when a show of positive emotion may alienate

the client. › How to communicate attunement.

UNDERSTANDING THE BRAIN TO BRAIN DYNAMICS OF ATTACHMENT

› How to generate a sense of secure attachment and why it is so important.

› Insecure attachment is associated with two major categories: anxious & avoidant.

› Problems that emerge with the avoidant attachment style in traditional therapy settings.

UNDERSTANDING THE BRAIN TO BRAIN DYNAMICS OF DOMINANCE AND SUBMISSION

› Mismanaged interpersonal dynamics that might cause the client to appear “unmotivated” or “resistant”.

› Therapeutic dominance. › A submissive posture.

UNDERSTANDING THE BRAIN TO BRAIN DYNAMICS OF RECIPROCITY

› It is within the context of cooperative endeavors that equanimity will fl ourish.

› Healthy collaborations balance giving and receiving resulting in mutual involvement & mutual benefi t.

› Relational comfort is increased with reciprocal disclosure.HOW TO RECOGNISE AND REPAIR EMERGING RUPTURES IN THE THERAPEUTIC ALLIANCE

› Research shows that therapists are poor predictors of relationship quality.

› Clients often conceal negative feelings about therapy, resulting in unannounced dropout.

› Methods for establishing reliable and routine feedback. › How some mistakes strengthen the therapeutic relationship.

» Recognise core issues in the therapeutic alliance - idealisation and devaluing, struggles for control, and abandonment fears - as manifestations of traumatic attachment.

» Become skilled at “right brain to right brain” communication, or being able to “talk” without words.

» See therapeutic relationship as dance between attachment systems.

» Therapeutic relationship and managing sense of threat: » Unconscious nature of body memory » Nonverbal cues and therapeutic communication

» Working brain to brain: » Role of mirror neurons » Social engagement system » Flowing with resistance
