Like the Vietnam war and Watergate,of American political fig·

of John F. Kennedy in Dealey Plamurder and cover-up reminiscent of

'Banana Republics' coups hasaccepted fact within the Amer

political process. At Georgetown University over Thanks·

weekend, 200 authors, researchers,investigators held a two

symposium on American political

to mutuallyand thm

participants came

ideas on 'why' and their evion 'how' political fJ gUres have

m this country.

The conference, the first of its kindorganized by the Committee to In

Assassinations, was chair ed bythe current lawyer

conspirator James McCord.Fensterwald told the opening session that

CTIA was only four years old, buthat the effort to fmd the truth behind

he Kennedy assassination had begun on

he day he was killed.Fensterwald was followed by Norman

ailer, who spoke briefly for the need of

a 'Fifth Estate' to force the truth fromthe government. After the opening remarks, the conference began to hear panel discussions on the status of prominent assassination cases, research methodology, medical and physical evidence supporting conspiracy theories, and how themedia has covered poJitiE:al assassinations.

While the bulk of information and discussion was centered on the murder ofohn F. Kennedy , there was some atten

tion given to the murders of other political figures. James Lesar, the attorney forames Earl Ray, told the symposium that

his client had not killed Martin LutherKing, but rather had been framed whenthe Justice Department and the FBI'wn>ngly solved' the King Murder. Lesarpointed out that the pattern for politicalassassinations is for the Federal Bureau ofInvestigation to seize control of the casefrom the local police department. The

FBI and the Justice Department, he concluded, are the only organizations withthe resources to follow the leads that proveJames Earl Ray's innocence, and it is highly unlikely that they will •ever do so.

Newsman Ronald Van Doren spoke about the attempt to kill Gov. George Wallace. Van Doren said 'There is no doubtthat Arthur Bremer pulled the trigger onGeorge Wallace. The question is 'Whopulled the trigger on Arthur Bremer?'Van Doren outlined Bremer's behaviorami attacked his 'diary' as being a contrived document. The motivation forthe Wallace assassination attempt waslaid to expectations that Wallace wouldrun as an independent and take votes a-way from President Nixon's 'mandate.'

The most nteresting and also the mostdisappointing, panel discussion took placeat the close of the conference. A panel ontheories of conspiracy was presented, and

its participants included Victor Marchetti

(former CIA official), Fletcher Prouty (former Defense Department laison to the CIA),Earl Golz (investiptive reporter for the Dallas Morning News), Richard Popkin (author

of The econd Osw ald), Robert Brown

(former Army Special Forces officer), and

Peter Dale Scott (political scientist and author of The ar Conspiracy).

Scott was the only panel participant tostate the fetilings of many in the conferenceaudience. Scott charged that John Kennedywas murdered as a result of a conspiracybetween anti-Kennedy corporate powersusing the Federal government intelligenceapparatus, the Special Services Bureau ofthe Dallas Police Department, and elementsof organized rime as resources for theirmurder plan.

Other members of the panel talked ofpossible complicity between the SecretService and organized crime, but their theories were weak in motivation for the murder - only Scott's charges of corporate in

volvement provided a believable motlvefor the assasination. There were small problems at the con

ference . Members of the Zippie/Yippiecrew from New York came down to raisehell at the meeting. Yip/Zip leader TomForcade, in an unbelievable display rif violent sexism , upturned a table on a womanCTIA worker who had told him not to passout leaflets for a Zippie demonstration.

The next day , A.j. Weberman began to

bait Fletcher Prouty about his job with theAmtrak Corp., charging that Amtrak wasa government organization. Weberman andother Zippies present were promoting Sherman Scolnick, a Chicago-based researcherwho claims Mrs. E. Howard Hunt was mur dered in order to silence her. Scolnick, whos known to be a publicity hound, was overshadowed by the presence of more capable

ruearchers, and his affiliation with the Zippies was an excercise in ''who-was-usingwho. While their diruptions were minor, they did serve to distract and use time that

was needed for more discussion of the issues.

The Zips decided to hold a demonstra

tion during the meeting, and about 15 ofthem attracted a• small crowd of 60 out

side the National Archives. The demonstration was called to draw attention to thefact that J FK s brain is missing from theArchives-a point that was brought out and

thoroughly discussed at the symposium byPittsburgh coroner Dr. Cyril Wecht.

The Decade of Assassinations conferenceended on Saturday night with the showingof the Zapruder film of the Kennedy assassination. While no single theory of conspiracy was adopted by the conference, those studying assassinations finally hada chance to meet and exchange information. For many, the showing of the Z.,ruder film was the first opportunity theyhad ever had to view the suppressed pieceof evidence.

. ..

While the views on conspiracy dif.

fer, the rum brought out the important

concept shared by all: in slow motion.JFK's head is split by a bullet from thefront. T he contention of the Warren Com

mission that one lone sniper killedJack

Kennedy from the back is totally disprovedby the film, and the search for the truth ·continues. It will only come from those

who are independent and unafraid like

those who attended the CTIA conference.

Conspiracy:

Brain, Brain,Who s Got the Brain?by ethany Weidner

Some conspiracies are dirty little secrets, like Watergate. Some are open t o the public,

like the radical conspiracies of the sixties. Then there are conspiracies whose purpose

is-to cover up, and the conspiracy of sil-.ence that surrounds the death of John Kennedy seems to many the most sinister con spiracy of all.

Some who believe this plan to meet atthe National Archives November 23rd todemand access to assassination evidencethat has been denied to independent researchers.

In particular , the group wants to see

Kennedy 's brain which they believe is pre served somewhere with a crucial c l u ~ Dr.Cyril Wecht , a lawyer and pathologist (heheads th e Institute of Forensic Sciencesat Duquesne University) says microscope

slides show the presence of an obj ect at

the front of the brain. But without thebrain itself, no one can determine what theobject may have been . f it was a bullet, there would necessarily have been another

gunman besides swald , shooting from a

different angle. But the brain has disappeared. The New

York Times inquired momentarily into itswhereabouts in an August 1972 article, speculating that it was returned to agentsof the Kennedy family. Those agents saythey never had possession of it. The group

which wants to get hold of it thinks it maybe .at the Bethesda Naval Laboratory .

of political figures than madness alone. LeeJ anor interviewed Lyndon johnsen for aJu ly 1973 article in Atlantic Monthly and

quoted the former president as saying, Inever believed Oswald acted alone, althoughI can accept that he pulled the trigger.  Several resolutions to reopen the investigationhave been introduced in Congress, but nonehave been adopted.

The most famous film of all - a bootleg-ged version of the footage taken by Abraham

Zapruder on that fateful day in Dallas (count-

less copies of which were made and spread

around New Orleans by pistrict Attorney•

Jim Garrison in his heyday) will have in ef-fect its world premier at the November 23rd

rally . The Committee to Open the Archivesand Examine the Evidence will project thefilm on th e wall of the Archives that afternoon.

The Committee to Open the •ArchivesinCludes several well-known critics of theofficial single-assassination theory:

- Mae Russell , the grandmother of assassination buffs publishes a conspiracy newsletter. She began digging into contradic

tions in the official theory ten years ago.- Mark Lane, who wrote Rush to Judge-ment a best-selling book about Kennedy'sassassination . ·- Carl Oglesby, the principal proponent of aconspiracy theory that begins with J FK ,goes through RFK, King, Malcolm X, George Wallace and beyond Watergate . t in-

\

eludes the Cowboys-Yankees theory (loosely: post World War II new money vs. eastem elite liberal interests).

- Sherman Skolnick, a maverick researcherlately of the Otto Kerner investigations in

I.Tf CI IPIVELL

Illinois.- Don Freed who, with Lane, wrote an assassination film appearing in neighborhoodtheaters, Executive Action starring Burt

Lancaster and rated PG.

Dear Friends,

::> . am w i t i n ~ this letter in response to/ Tun Butz s art1cle on the Assassination

forum held several weeks ago at Georgetown U's Gaston Hall. I am a student atGWU who attended the conference withabsolutely no affliations with any panelists, The Committee to Investigate Assassinations (TCIA), or other parties, andas a result must take issue with the b u l lshit appearing in Mr. Butz's article.

Mr. Butz is correctin implying thatminute items of relevant and new information appeared. -side froJ l my

elf. I found that a great many of the

~ i l v

participants were chagrin? Ut payiiig$15 to hear panelists talk ~bility,'' "ambivalency" or how muchalcohol was consumed the previous night.

When I stated my concern in a question and answer period about the lack ofhard core information, relevance, and theimportance of relating the current political climate (i.e., the Wallace shooting,

Watergate activities etc.)I

received noresponse from any one on stage. WhenI asked in light of rumors stating thatGaston Hall was given for free to theTCIA, how the $15 admission fee ( anoutrage in itself) was being used by TCIA,

I was answered by Barry Fensterwald thatI "should organize my own conference."Fensterwald, head of TCIA, was responding to my query in a tone reminiscent ofNixon toward anti-war demonstrators. Inother words, he was saying it is none ofyour goddamn business.

I also resent the fact that Butz (remember him?) felt it necessary to lump myselfand other audience members concernedwith the scope that the conference was

taking with Sherman Scolnick and thenon-existent Yippie "group." We formed -a faction that was justifiably pissed off atFensterwald and his committed for providing the conference with seeming littlereturn on our $15 . Why was so little factual, pertinent information evident? Whywere persons with valuable testimony in

the audience, instead of on the stagespeaking from microphones ? As a resultwe met over lunch and decided to present

a petition to the conference to give al ternative speakers an opportunity to voicetheir views.

Where were-the facts? Where were •panelists who had something to say inspecific-terms? Where was Fensterwald

g to ·appear on stage toanswer any and all qu estions " concerningserious allegations pertaining to his organization and his role in the planning of thisconvention at Georgetown ? Why did henever app ear?

No t only did Mr. Butz fail to perceive Ithis in an unbiased way but he presented· \an unfair description to your readership. As a regular reader of the Daily Rag  I \don't expect objec tive reporting, but Iam used to a sense of quality and a con-cern for representing dissident views. •

Mr. Butz presented us with a "white- Iwash." He wrote erroneous, maliciousstatements. Again, I, as a participant, object to others trying to protest in a peace-ful and ''l;ational" way, being depicted asan irrational, arrogant group of publicityseekers. I am personally insulted and outraged by it. Perhaps Mr. Butz will respond.

The Rag and its readers might be interested in reading different accounts presentedin the ost and the Star-News or even talking with WLIRR, WGTB (in DC) or Pacificareporters covering the event. I think thatthey seemed to be far more objective thanMr. Butz, in realizing what was coming downat the conference.

I hope you11 print this so your readership will realize that what went on at Gaston Hall was more than a daring attempt ofa ' 'bunch of Yippies, paranoids, and publicity seekers trying to disrupt an infonilativemeeting". Possibly others who attended willrespond to this letter. Many thanks foryour time and space. Stay well.

Most specifically, David Liss.
