It has been a wonderful year of our collaboration with Society
of Photonics and Instrumentation Engineering, SPIE, USA
which has helped us to enrich our knowledge in Photonics,
Applied Optics, Bio-medical Engineering, Optical and Digital
image processing, Concepts of Optical Fibre and several other
fields of physics and electronics. Within this one year we have
organized several seminars and talks by eminent professors
and lecturers from renowned universities of various countries
and they have enlightened us on different topics. Apart from
this some educational tours were organized by our chapter for
our chapter members. Hope we keep enjoying our association
with the chapter and keep learning more and increase our
knowledge.

( 18 -22 January, 2016 ) Student Chapter members actively participated in Department of Science and
Technology (DST), Govt. of India sponsored INSPIRE Science Camp.
The basic objectives of INSPIRE are to attract talented young students of high
school to undertake Science studies at an early stage and to help build the
required critical human research & development base of our Nation . It is a
program with along term foresight.
The camp was co-ordinated by Prof. Indrani Bhattacharya supported by faculty
members of UEM & IEM, KOLKATA, INDIA. SPIE student chapter members
were actively involved in setting up the laboratories related to basic sciences
and conduced lab classes including robotics and with a special emphasis on
light based experiments.
Around 250 TOP students of Class XI (who have secured more than 88%
marks in class X), with SCIENCE background, from various schools of
Kolkata including different districts of West Bengal, India participated in this
camp.

ONGOING SOLAR LUMINAIRE PROJECT
• A project to accumulate sunlight using convexlenses and bringing them indoors using opticalfibers.
• Two axis solar tracker to improve efficiency.
• Solar panel fitted with the lens array andconnected to a battery for lighting aftersunset.
The aim of the indoor solar luminary project with optic fibrecable is to provide light in a room without using Electric Bulb. Inthis project we are intending to use optical fibre bundle as amedium for transporting light energy. Here we are proposing touse 4 bundles of fibre strands each of 0.98 inch diameter whichwill be mounted on a box of size 10”x11”x13.5”. Converging lensare mounted on the top of the box and focused on the opening ofthe optical fibre so that more light can enter in the optical fibre. Asolar tracking system is proposed by using two LDR so that directsunlight enters in the fibre. The axle is rotated by a high torque lowspeed motor. We are using the input power from a solarpanel(12v,20 watt). The optical fibre coming out from the outlet ofthe outdoor unit is the placed at the ceiling on the dark rooms, fitted with a diffuser at the end.
AIM OF THE PROJECT
