Rockways Filter FallsOne of the questions we get asked most at Bradshaws is how to hide a fi lter box. Rockways have come up with a clever solution to that problem – a fi lter and waterfall in one! Water is pumped from your pond into the waterfall and then comes back up through the fi lter media and out over the top of the waterfall. G4 Concrete Pond SealerIf you have decided to make your pond from concrete then you will need to seal the top layer of render to stop the water getting in and the lime, which is harmful to fi sh, getting out. The best way to do this is with G4 Sealer. You don’t need a primer, just paint it straight onto the concrete. There is a choice of clear (dries translucent) or black.

The strongest type of pond. If you get it right first time your pond will last for many years. However, this method of construction can be technically difficult, expensive and time-consuming. Foundations must be reinforced and the final layer of render should include reinforcement fibres and be sealed with G4.

Seals and waterproofs concrete ponds

For Clear you need 3 coats – a total of 550g per square metre (g/m²) that you will cover.For Black you need 2 coats of Clear first then two coats of Black. That’s 410g/m² of Clear and 400g/m² of Black.You can also use G4 to coat flagstones, waterfalls, statues and other concrete products to make them safe for your pond.

Adds strength to render

Calculating your internal pond areaThe amount of G4 you need depends on the internal surface area of your pond. In the example opposite the pond is a brick shape 2 metres by 1 metre and 1 metre deep. It makes the working out easier if you draw an exploded picture like we've done.• Step 1. Work out the area of the bottom (in this case 2 x 1 or 2m2)

• Step 2. Find the area of Side A (in this case 2 x 1 or 2m2). Times your answer by 2 for Side B which is the same (4 m2)

Tips and Hints

Understanding GoldfishHere at Bradshaws we recommend goldfish should have a pond depth of 2’ if the pond is sheltered (against a wall or fence) or 3’ if not. Goldfish will not generally outgrow their pond. Lots of common pond fish are actually goldfish that have been bred for colour or body shape such as shubunkins, comets and others. Goldfish can be left in the pond all year and should grow to about 12” or a little larger in ideal conditions. They mix with all other pond fish including koi.

These pumps must be placed outside the water on a fl at surface. They are not weatherproof. To join together your pond pumps, fi lters and other equipment you’ll need some hose and clips (unless you buy one of our complete kits from pages 14-17).

Picking the right size hosePicking the right size hose is easy. Just look at your pump’s outlet size (in mm) and your filter’s inlet size (in mm). Pick the largest one that appears in both and that is your hose size. It’s important to choose the biggest hose size you can as this will maximise the water flow.Example:Titan 3000 pump (p27) outlet size is 20-40mm connecting to a Bioforce 5500 Filter (p41) inlet size 20-25mm. The biggest size that they will both take is 25mm so that is the size you should choose. Other fittings should always be the same size as the hose, so if you have 25mm hose you need 25mm clips, taps etc.

Kaldnes K1 and K3The ‘Kaldnes Moving Bed ‘ process has been tried and tested in commercial applications for over 10 years. Now it is available to the fi sh keeper. The media are wheel shaped and fl oat, letting them move around in the fi lter. This process constantly removes old, dead bacteria from the media making room for young healthy bacteria that will grow and feed rapidly on the harmful ammonia and nitrite introduced by fi sh waste.
