Past, Present and Future Tense
The tense of a word tells us when an action has happened. It is necessary to use the correct tense in our writing so that it makes sense.
PastThe past tense tells us that the event has already happened.Eg. I cooked dinner yesterday.
PresentThe present tense tells us that the event is happening now.Eg. I am cooking dinner today.
FutureThe future tense tells us that the event will happen.Eg. I will cook dinner tomorrow.
When changing the tense to past or future we keep the ‘base word’ and add a suffix.A suffix is small group of letters added to the end of a word to change the meaning of the word.
The suffix for regular past tense words is ’ed’.
Base word = cookPast tense suffix = ed
Past Tense Word = cooked.
The suffix for regular present tense words is ’ing’.
Base word = cookPresent tense suffix = ing
Present Tense Word = cooking.
Here are a few examples of regular past, present and future tense
words. Can you think of any more?
PAST PRESENT FUTURE
painted painting will paint
laughed laughing will laugh
trained training will train
jump jumping will jump
bounced bouncing will bounce
Complete the table with your own past, present and future
tense words.
PAST PRESENT FUTURE
Read the following sentences and decide if they are past, present or future tense by putting a tick into the correct column.
Sentence Past Present Future
Samuel is walking his dog.
Rachel will play a game on the iPad.
Antonio is eating a cupcake.
Kimberley is writing very neatly.
Leyland played handball at recess.
Zoe jumped over the log.
Michael bounced the ball very high.
Week 3: Sunlight Experiments
Learning Intentions❏ I will be able to work like a scientist to follow a guided
experiment about the power of sunlight. ❏ I will be able to predict, experiment and record findings.
Instructions:
Watch: Think and Work like a Scientist https://clickv.ie/w/UYMl Write: List some ways that you could prove that the Sun’s heat changes things. Review: Look at the experiment that has been conducted to prove the Sun’s light energy can change things. Task: Conduct the experiment and record your data.
Vocabulary

prove question steps
How can we prove the Sun’s power changes things?
In Lesson 2, you looked at examples of the Sun’s power. After looking around and asking questions, a scientist then experiments to find out how and why things work. Watch the ‘Think and Work like a Scientist’ video https://clickv.ie/w/UYMl. There are many ways we can prove that the Sun’s heat energy changes things. Write some ways you could experiment to prove the Sun heats things up (one idea has been done for you).
1. We could put wax crayons out in the hot Sun to see if they melt. 2.
An experiment has been conducted to prove that the Sun’s light energy can also change things.
The sun has the power to change things and produces heat to make things warm/hot.You will now do an experiment to test whether black or white absorbs more heat. First make a prediction to tell me which one you think will become hotter. If you don’t have black and white paper you could leave a black and white crayon in the sun.
I predict...
Steps: Fill 2 jars or containers with equal amounts of water that is the same temperature. Wrap one jar with black paper and one jar with white paper. Place the black one on a piece of black construction paper and the white one on a piece of white construction paper and put them in the sun for several hours.

Irregular Past Tense
Remember:The tense of a word tells us
when an action has happened.
Remember this is important in our writing so that it sounds correct.
PastThe past tense tells us that the event has already happened.Eg. I cleaned the kitchen yesterday.
In the previous lesson we learned that when changing the tense to past we keep the ‘base word’ and add
the ‘ed’ suffix.
Base word = cleanPast tense suffix = edPast Tense Word =
cleaned.
Remember a suffix is small group of letters added to the end of a word to change the meaning of
the word, in this case it changes the tense, telling us it happened
in the past.
However, like many spelling and grammatical rules in
English, we have exceptions!
A
When referring to past tense verbs that do not follow the
rule of adding ‘ed’ we call them Irregular Past Tense Verbs.
Can you think of any?
Here are a few examples of irregular past tense verbs. Can you think of any more?
