B&R Enclosures was founded by Dick Bridges in 1955, specialising in sheet metal fabrication, including electrical enclosures for domestic metering applications.

With little capital but great enthusiasm for operating his own business and a determination to succeed, Dick commenced operations in his backyard in Adelaide, South Australia.

It was this family determination that has sustained B&R’s growth into manufacturing plants in Brisbane, Adelaide and Sydney, 8 locations nationally and an international network of distributors.

B&R Enclosures can offer extensive supply chain capabilities featuring supply from stock (ex our national warehouse network), supply of assembled to order solutions with short lead times, value adding services and cooperation with other suppliers to allow for integration of third party products into enclosures, racks or cabinets prior to shipment.

B&R is also experienced in arranging specialised freight, product delivery, installation and removal of packaging. We measure our service performance and can provide regular written reports if required. Made to OrderThese products are manufactured according to a customer's specifi cation. They are marked in our catalogues as "▲ Available on request" and have a standard lead time of 2-3 weeks.

Assembled-to-OrderThese products are assembled to order upon receipt of a customer order. All components required to build an ATO item cannot be sold seperately and must form part of a kit. Standard lead time is 4-6 weeks from date of order.

Engineered-to-OrderThese products are a custom designed product that is 100% fi t-for-purpose, delivered onsite and ready for installation. Our design & engineering team can customise an enclosure to suit the application requirements. Contact us for more information.

CONNECT & COMMISSION

The solution provided by B&R is now ready for connection and

commission stage.

At B&R, we have four (4) manufacturing supply options (see below for more

information). These options ensure that our most common products are available direct from B&R when you need them. When you

place your order our customer service team will advise you of the delivery time.

DELIVERY

B&R’s HDC enclosures provide a solution for Fibre-To-The-Home (FTTH) connectivity, suitable for fibre and copper cables. They can be either surface or flush mounted. These enclosures meet the guidelines outlined in NBN's Residential Preparation and Installation Guidelines.

Inset corner posts – A unique feature exclusive to B&R data products. With the inset corner posts as close to the equipment as possible and ensuring the frame is fully welded.

The ultimate in flexibility – With no corner posts to limit the size of the doors, the Ausrack Plus frames can have a full width door fi tted. By using B&R's mesh doors, the equipment installed gets maximum airfl ow through the cabinet.

Why 63% mesh doors will work for you.In many applications of mesh doors, the pressure loss through the door is one of the design considerations. In most situations the air impact velocity on the door won't be much over 1.5m/s.

As seen in the graph, B&R's 63% mesh doors will have a negligible pressure drop at these velocities. Most computer room air conditioners generate more than 20Pa of pressure, more than enough to overcome the pressure drop at the door in a containment situation.

For example, in a data centre environment, a 15kW heat load in a 45RU cabinet would require 3500m3/h of airflow. This is equivalent of a 1.35m/s impact velocity. In a containment situation with a positive aisle pressure this will be more than the pressure drop of the doors and the equipment will receive sufficient air flow.

With such a negligible restriction to airflow, the higher percentages available in the market have no real advantage. The 63% mesh was developed as a cross over point of functional performance andhigher security.

Side CladdingSide panels include venting and are easy-to-fi t using locating pins and slam latches. They can be locked into the frame for added security using either an external key lock kit (ARSPL) or an internal latch kit (ARSPIL).

Privacy Panels are a secure method of providing security to a single cabinet when cabinets are bayed together, by using either anon-removable panel, or a removable set of panels. These panels can also segregate air to ensure no cross cabinet mixing.

The new Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH) is a major health facility offering tertiary level health care for South East Queensland. The hospital was built on the Greenfields site adjacent to Griffith University Gold Coast campus at a cost of $1.76 billion. With 750 beds, the facility demanded a secure and innovative IT infrastructure solution to manage sensitive patient information and ensure peace of mind.

After a 12 month tender process, B&R Enclosures were awarded the GCUH project for a two stage delivery of a central data centre and other critical data infrastructure locations around the hospital. With a proven track record in delivering data ICT projects with Queensland Health, the opportunity for B&R to join the project team was welcomed by UXC who are the largest Australian-owned ICT consultancy firm as well as Anixter, a global supplier of electrical and communications equipment. Proof of good channel management and an ability to manage small and large health projects were positive indicators of B&R’s commitment to work towards successful project completion.

In the data centre, B&R delivered a custom solution that consisted of 70 Ausrack Plus cabinets complete with vertical brush inserts, custom air duct system and PDU brackets. With airflow and security a major consideration of the data centre design – blanking panels were used to seal off the front section of the cabinets from the hot exhaust air at the rear of the cabinet. Furthermore, custom lockable cable zone covers were designed and manufactured to increase access security. By integrating cable zones into the rack design, the install was clean and efficient with the ability to quickly create cable looms and cross cabinet cabling. The decision to pursue B&R’s lockable cable zones in health care projects is becoming more common with a desire to maximise centre security and mitigate the risk of operational failure.

Supply to the hospital was in a two stage delivery, spanning two consecutive months. Specialised delivery with dedicated drops ensured all equipment was in original condition and installation could commence immediately. Since its opening, B&R representatives have conducted follow-up activities to ensure the data centre and other equipment has remained at optimum performance.

B&R Enclosure’s experience in delivering data solutions to the healthcare industry continues to grow as awarded the tender for Gold Coast University Hospital. With security and airflow as major considerations, B&R were able to deliver a customised solution for long-term functionality and reliability.

These open panel spaces allow cold air to flow through your cabinet to the back, reducing the cold air that goes to the equipment in the upper racks. That equipment can then run too hot, shortening its life.

What’s more, the cold air in the cabinet mixes with the hot air that returns to your air conditioners, convincing the air conditioners into thinking the temperature is lower than it actually is.

This means your air conditioners won’t work efficiently because the cooling of the hardware is reduced which creates higher temperatures and shortens the life of the equipment.

As well as cold air moving from front to back through your open panels, hot air can bypass from back to front, where it rises and delivers even warmer air to the upper computers.

This is why servers toward the tops of cabinets often have a statistically higher failure and error rate than those at the bottom. Loading cabinets from bottom to top and closing all the remaining spaces with blanking panels and baffles will make a big difference.

In a world of big things, the little things in life are often overlooked. We are busy searching for the big idea, looking at the big picture, or chasing that big adventure. Especially in technology, business is driven by big data, powered by even bigger data centres.

But what about the little things? Where would the big wheel be without the small cog that keeps it turning?

It can be hard to see how the small things matter – until it all goes wrong. In the complex world of the data centre, the little things are critical. Variations in temperature, improperly connected cables, the accidental overloading of branch circuits. With the potential for so many things to go wrong at rack level, it can start to feel as though the little things begin to snowball out of control.

What you need are eyes and ears in every part of the data centre - or even better, a brain that can actively monitor and measure these individual events and give advanced warning before the problems escalate to failure.

The rack PDU (Power Distribution Unit) is a small, but vital part of the data centre energy supply chain – the IT gear can’t function without it. You’ll find one in every IT rack, usually two. But of seemingly small significance, the additional cost of a PDU is often overlooked amongst the bigger purchasing decision of IT and facilities.

“Let’s just get the PDU that comes with it”……..and you’re left with a vanilla PDU that simply distributes power.

B&R's intelligent range of energy PDUs work like a brain within the rack, providing comprehensive,accurate energy measurement data needed to reduce waste, enhance operations, and prove the business case for optimisation.

The energy metering PDU is far more than a simple power distribution and energy meter; actively monitoring the data centre environment, the intelligent PDU sits within the rack continually looking for threats from electrical circuit overloads, and any physical and environmental conditions which might place critical IT computing loads at risk. Combine a B&R data cabinet with an intelligent power distribution unit and you have a smart rack capable of providing the information you require.

Data cages provide a method of segregating customer racks and equipment into defined zones, providing a high level of security for equipment in a facility that contains multiple users.

With the ever increasing need to provide a secure method of housing equipment within a co-location data centre environment, B&R Enclosures can manufacture, supply and install data cages designed with the customer in mind.

Manufactured from 1.6mm thick zinc coated steel with powdercoated textured matt black surface finish, standard sized components are offered to achieve cage heights of 2400mm or 2700mm. Other standard inclusions consist of a sliding or hinged door fitted with a customer supplied locking mechanism. B&R's data cages can be tailored to suit the requirements of any data centre and are fixed top and bottom using a variety of fixings from TEK screws to explosive fasteners to limit dust.

B&R Enclosures continually invest in innovative technologies and the development of their staff, with a team of data champions able to provide onsite consultancy, design and installation of the required cages. Data cage solutions

Cold aisle containment is a method of increasing cooling efficiency, reducing power consumption and is intended to prevent air temperature zones from being mixed together in a data centre.

Cold air is fed through a false floor into a contained cold aisle. This air flows through the front of the server racks, removes the heat from installed equipment and is expelled as hot air through the rear of the cabinet. The hot air is then removed by the data centre air conditioning system.

Having the cold aisle contained means the area requiring cooling is much smaller and therefore less power is required by the C.R.A.C unit to keep it at the recommended temperature.

Cold aisle containment ensures businesses do not have to increase the cooling capacity within the data centre whilst increasing cooling efficiency and reducing costs.

Installing a cold aisle in a workplace improves the working environment for staff, as the room does not need to be kept at a low ambient temperature. Even the cold aisle can often be warmer than that of an uncontained data centre. An uncontained data centre needs to have its air conditioning set for the installation that requires the most cooling, whereever that is within the data centre.

Based on 25mm increments, the iLINQ frame maximises usable space.

Advantages include:• Ability to position mounting pans on all

axes.• Ability to intersect matrix rails on the

Modular Design

The frame rail is fundamental to iLINQ’s fl exibility, quality and strength. The rail is galvanised, pre-punched, roll-formed, ultrasonically welded and re-galvanised.ILINQ frame is designed to an IEC grid:• Profi les have attachment cavities at 12.5

increments.• Attachment cavities for M5 taptite at

25mm increments.• M6 and M8 cage nut fi xing locations at

25mm increments.

Flexible Design

The hinging design of iLINQ allows for a 170° door opening. Due to the symmetrical iLINQ design, any combination of doors, hinged cladding can be fitted to any side.

The time taken to rotate doors is:• Single door/swing handle = 3 minutes• Double door/swing handle = 5 minutes.

Our Ausrack Plus 19" cabinets havebeen designed to comply with industry SSI specifications.

The SSI specification is an expansion of the EIA-310-D standard set by the Electronic Industries Association. It is a voluntary specification signed by all major server manufacturers, some of which include Dell®, HP® and IBM®. It defines rack dimensions to which a company can manufacture their equipment. The table and diagram on page 105 outlines the compliance specification in detail and outlines a representation of B&R's Ausrack Plus product offer.

19" Rack Specification

A rack’s mounting fixture consists of two parallel metal strips (referred to as "rails") standing vertically. The rails are separated by a gap of 450 mm (17.72 inch) and are a minimum of 16.7 mm (0.657 inch) wide, giving an overall rack width of 482.6 mm or 19", as the name suggests.

The rails have holes at regular intervals, with both rails matching, so that each hole is part of a horizontal pair with a centre to centre distance of 465mm (18.3 inch). The holes are arranged vertically in repeating sets of three, with centre to centre separations of 12.7 mm (0.5 inch), 15.875 mm (0.625 inch) and 15.875 mm. The hole pattern repeats every 44.45 mm (1.75 inches).

Racks are divided into regions that are 44.45 mm in height. Within this region, commonly referred to as an “RU” or “U”, there are three complete hole pairs in a vertically symmetrical pattern that are centred 6.4mm (0.25 inches), 22.2mm (0.875 inches) and 38.1mm (1.5inches) from the top or bottom of the RU.

ABOUT YourDC

YourDC is a state of the art data centre provider based in Adelaide, South Australia. Offering Tier 3 hosting options, they provide traditional data centre space on a per-rack / per-room basis for clients after an additional aspect of security.

YourDC have data centres on the north and south sides of Adelaide, the newest being their 800 rack facility in Edinburgh Parks.

Edinburgh Parks is currently the only Tier 3 facility in Adelaide, offering data centre security within a secure location. The cold aisle containment used in its data rooms provides an environmentally friendly and economic way to maintain a consistent temperature amongst the server racks.

B&R Enclosures have worked extensively with YourDC on past projects, supplying server racks for their Data Centre in Hawthorn, SA.

B&R were approached by YourDC to supply specialised data cabinets with superior airflow containment for their $30m Edinburgh Parks site. The design needed to be modular so that the pods could be replicated across multiple rooms. YourDC were after a complete solution, from design to manufacture and installation within a specified timeframe.

B&R worked closely with YourDC to create a custom solution to meet their needs. Keeping YourDC's security and individualisation requirements in mind, B&R designed cabinets with privacy segregation panels and fully automated sensor doors at each end of the row. Partnered with the privacy panels, the mesh doors offer effective airflow, working with the cold aisle system to provide economic airflow containment.

B&R supplied Australian Made premium Ausrack Plus cabinets to fill the modular pods requested by YourDC. One pod contains 20 cabinets, each 45RU in height, bayed together with privacy panels. B&R also supplied clear roof panelling for cold aisle containment and fully automated sliding doors.

Using privacy panels between each cabinet prevents cross cabinet airflow, ensuring that all heat generated by the servers can flow directly out of the system without contaminating the cool air running through less active server bays.
