A new healthcare facility is open in ChesterTyler’s Retreat at Iron Bridge, located at 12001 Iron Bridge Road, is the

newest short-term rehabilitation and skilled nursing facility in the com-munity. The facility officially opened Dec. 28, 2009, and is operated bySaber Healthcare Group, a growing company based in Cleveland, Ohio.

The 90-bed facility was constructed to provide more options for arearesidents in search of a healthcare facility. The vision of owners, BillWeisberg and George Repchick, is to provide quality care to the people ofour community. Saber Healthcare Group is on the cutting edge of health-care, seeking out the latest innovations in medicine and specializedpatient care. The Saber Healthcare Group has a network of over 30 facili-ties.

Tyler’s Retreat at Iron Bridge is the third facility they have purchasedin Virginia. A fourth facility is currently under construction in StaffordCounty.

Tyler’s Retreat’s staff is made up of experienced CNA, LPNs and Registered Nurses who have a resident-focusedapproach. Lucinda Knarr is the Administrator and Amy Ruddick is the Director of Admissions and Marketing. “Wewant our residents to know that we will accommodate each person’s individual needs and preferences,” Knarr said.“They can be independent and pick and choose their schedules, therapy sessions and make their own health care deci-sions.”

The facility has wide, well-lit hallways, two nursing stations, a large rehabilitation gym and a courtyard in the cen-ter. The spacious private rooms have luxury amenities, private baths and are large enough for residents to bring intheir own furniture if they desire. The fine-dining services allow residents to choose from a menu for their meals. They also have an in-house beauty shop, a parlor, a large recreation room and a smaller game room.

The facility is suitable for residents who have recently had surgery or a hospital stay and may require therapy orskilled nursing services before returning home. It can also accommodate individuals with a pro-longed acute or chronicillness. Medical services are offered 24 hours a day and include physical, occupational and speech therapy, infusion thera-pies, cardiac recovery services, diabetic management, wound therapy and a wide array of skilled nursing services.

The facility also offers outpatient therapy services to former residents and non-residents. Having skilled therapistson staff allows for continuity and quality of patient care to those residents returning home who need to continue theirtherapy.

The various therapies offered through Tyler’s Retreat at Iron Bridge help residents improve and maintain theirquality of life and prepare them for life after discharge.

Tyler’s Retreat at Iron Bridge is excited to be part of the Chesterfield community. Over the upcoming year, as theirresident population grows, they will hire approximately 100 new employees. CitruSolution process is Keyto superior cleaning service

James Key is owner and operator of CitruSolu-tion carpet and upholstery cleaning. The businessis located in Chester, Va., and services the south-west Richmond metro area.

After working 20 years as a Process Engineer forReynolds Metals Company and Infineon Semicon-ductor Company, I decided to go into business formyself. I evaluated the CitruSolution process andwas very impressed with the results and decided tobuy into the franchise, which is located in Atlanta.

The CitruSolution process started back in 1986and the current process was finalized in 2002. Weprovide the best and most reliable carpet, rug andupholstery cleaning service to residential and com-mercial customers.

The CitrusSolution process does not use any soapand does not soak your carpet. The dry cleaningsolvent is made from extracts of citrus peels with atwist of lemons and grapefruit. Smells great! Theprocess is very effective against pet stains and canreverse yellowing and browning typically associat-ed with wet, soapy and foaming methods.

The three-step process involves pre-spray withour solvent cleaner that doesn’t contain any soap, sothere will not be any sticky residue left in the car-pet. The second step is to brush with a bonnet dirtnapper to pick up the dirt to the surface and to workin the cleaning solution. The last step is to vacuum

with an industrial vacuum designed for the healthcare industry with three filters. Then the carpetwill dry in 1 to 2 hours and will reduce allergens.

We have a flat rate pricing with no hidden fees. A32 ounce bottle will be left with client, which we willrefill.

E. Alvin Small Funeral Homegrowing, changing

Alvin Small founded what is now E. Alvin Small Funeral Home andCrematory in 1952 on the Boulevard in Colonial Heights. Since the inter-state had not yet been opened, the road out front then carried most ofthe East Coast traffic and, as was common at that time, the funeralhome doubled as the local ambulance service.

With help from Alvin’s dad, Edward, two brothers, Herbert andRalph, and several close friends, they set the foundation for whatthe firm is today.

In 1990 Alvin’s nephews, Bryan Small and Louis Smith, assumedmanagement and ownership. Services continue at the same placeon the Boulevard and also at another location on Crater Road inPetersburg. There is also a crematory to service cremation needsand special equipment for the cremation of pets.

Families in the area still largely embrace a traditional approachwith visitations and burials. Many often bring in photographs, memen-tos and artifacts illustrative of a person’s life. A video tribute of personalphotos may also be shown and favorite music played rather than strictlyhymns. Visitations are often a somewhat festive reunion of longtime family and friends.

The public setting of the funeral home encourages friends and acquaintances that may be unwilling tovisit a family at their home. The mere presence of a visiting friend conveys much to a family. You don’tneed a lot to say. Funerals after all are a celebration of a life lived. Those who desire cremation are servedby the funeral home’s own crematory, the first in the Tri-Cities. Cremation can be very simple or can be theculmination of a traditional visitation and funeral ceremony.

Many people consider their pets to be a part of their families. The funeral home has Forever Friends PetCremation Service to aid those who have lost pets. Pet caskets are available and separate pet cremationequipment is used.

Families continue to be the number one priority for over 57 years and counting.

Purple cow showing remarkable growthHave you ever seen the purple cow of Colonial

Heights? I know many of you have, but you maynot have realized it was a purple cow! In fact, youmay not have even realized that you were actuallyinside the purple cow!

Remember Greenleaf Dairy that was located inColonial Heights? Well, the purple cow now standson that same land. “Where?” you ask. Let me tellyou the story.

Greenleaf Dairy as many of you know was afarm full of brown, black and white cows. Youdrank milk delivered from Greenleaf in the “goodold days,” never knowing that one day there wouldbe a purple cow on that land. While there may notbe anything extraordinary about a dairy farm fullof brown and black cows,

I think we would all agree that a purple cow istruly remarkable! Tell me, if you saw a purple cow, what would you do? Would you tell everyone youknew? Would you take them to see the purple cowso they could see it for themselves? Well, for thoseof you that I mentioned earlier who I know haveseen this purple cow, I can tell that is exactly whatyou did!

Long passed are the days of the dairy farm, but alittle over eight years ago, a purple cow was bornon that very land. Throughout the eight years ithas grown into a very remarkable cow, not just forthe purple and silver colors it displays, but morefor what it provides. The purple cow was the firstof its kind born in Colonial Heights and to this dayis still the only purple cow. But, this cow knowsthat in order to stay extraordinary, it must growagain. Over the past few months, many of us havewatched this remarkable purple cow grow and

some of us do not even realize that it is purple. Are you still wondering? Are you still thinking, I

have never seen a purple cow in Colonial Heights?I will tell you now that the name of this purple

cow is Dunlop House. Dunlop House is a uniqueassisted living community in so many ways, fromits staff to its customized services and wonderfulactivity program. In June 2009, the Dunlop Housecelebrated the grand opening of its new wing, dedi-cated to Alzheimer’s and dementia care. The newaddition was a three-year, roughly $6.5 million proj-ect. The new addition includes eight two-bedroom

apartments and 32 dementia care apartments. With it’s new addition dedicated to Alzheimer’s

and dementia care, the Dunlop House is trulyremarkable! I would be honored to show you justhow remarkable. Then you too can tell all yourfriends, you’ve seen and even been inside the purplecow.

Come visit the purple cow of Colonial Heights at235 Dunlop Farms Blvd. — Purple cow metaphorinspired by Seth Godin, author of “Purple CowTransform Your Business By Being Remarkable.”

BUSINESS WITH A HIGHER PURPOSE

With TV ads, internet opportunities, phoneand mail solicitation, one might think there’s noneed for a personal insurance agent in thesemodern day and times. How wrong that idea canbe! Our business truly has a higher purpose.Sure, you can purchase any type of insuranceproduct you’re searching for right here underthis roof, but it’s the level of caring for and aboutour clients that makes the difference. We’ve allexperienced it, making a purchase at a store, theperson waiting on you won’t even make eye con-tact, won’t stop their cell phone call, or the con-versation they are having with another fellow“non-service” person. We’ve experienced thatfirst hand and how annoyed we were when ithappened. Unfortunately, that does happen insome businesses no matter how hard the busi-ness owner works. We’ve experienced it here, but never again!

Our heartbeat is to care about your personaland varied business insurance needs ... as thecompany grows, even in tough financial times, our dependency is faith-based and we know allwill work out as it is intended to be.

Our job is to represent our clients, our compa-nies and our established reputation in the finestmanner. Compassion and care for those in hardtimes reflects the hard work our team does in

searching for the best coverage at the best pricefor every individual client. We feel your pain asyou negotiate your budget and your paycheck, and we realize the importance of good insurancecoverage should the unavoidable accident hap-pen and leave you in financial danger. Our per-sonal commitment is shown in every telephonetransaction, every contact with personal or com-mercial lines clients. We are people desiring tohelp people, to be available at your time of need. Our goal is to offer the BEST personal serviceyou can possibly expect or get anywhere in theTri-City area. As a team, we aim high and intendto hit the mark.

CORNERSTONE OF BUSINESS

Cornerstone Business Builders — This Chris-tian organization, founded by Michael Moore, brings businessmen and women together to sup-port each other, both spiritually and with refer-ring business to each other . Mr. Lundie says thisencouragement and edification of fellow busi-ness leaders reminds us as a team to approachwork as if we were doing it for the Lord, not forhim. Frank meets weekly with other businessleaders at Cornerstone Business Builders. “TeamLundie” says it’s changed their company, theirpeople, the atmosphere in their business, theirmission as a team.

STRATEGIC ALLIANCES

Four years ago, Frank Lundie met Jeff Graves, who’s the General Agent of Mass Mutual here inCentral Virginia. Jeff is partners with TommyEarle, who operates Financial Group of Virginia,a group benefits broker. Frankie, Jeff, and Tom-my formed Capital Financial Property & Casu-alty, LLC together in 2006. That new entity isnow a thriving and profitable business on itsown, and growing along at healthy pace. Theirrepresentatives now work with Capital’s clientsproviding top-tier choices of insurance compa-nies and products for any type of personal, busi-ness and corporate insurance solutions. Now,Lundie is rolling out the full compliment of ser-vices of Financial Group of Virginia’s benefitsofferings to Lundie clients. Look for them soon!

It’s been quite a pleasure enjoying the comple-tion of a long renovation and preservation ofthis building we love: it is full of character andcharacters!

EXPERIENCED PROFESSIONALS

With a dedicated staff and the status of anindependent agency, the Lundie team has accessto many markets which offer the ability to man-age and service all your insurance needs. Wheth-er the need is for individual health, automobile,or homeowners insurance, worker’s compensa-tion or general liability, or a 401-(K) for growingbusiness, Lundie guarantees to deliver a greatproduct presented by a professional, experi-enced agency.

MANAGEMENT

Frank Lundie is the “big picture” guy, the

visionary. Every visionary knows they’d better

have “detail people” to help execute their long-

term strategies. Anne Smith

started with Lundie right out

of college as a receptionist and

is now going on her 10th year

with Lundie. She’s learned the

business from the bottom up

and inside-out. She’s one of

those people that other people

always look to for perspective,

to figure out what their own

perspective should be. Anne

has risen like cream to the top

in the Agency Manager posi-

tion. She brings new focus,

attention to detail, purpose

and energy as she motivates

each employee to be their best

for the Lundie team. Frank is

so grateful for her unique skill

set and enthusiasm for the

future of the agency. She will

be greatly missed during her

six-week maternity leave —

congratulations Anne and

Russ on the birth of your new

son, Wyatt!

Tri-Cities Home Care Company Raises the Bar on ServiceThe population of American seniors is

expected to double in size within the next20 years, according to a special study enti-tled 65+ in the United States: 2005, commis-sioned by the National Institute on Aging. As our aging population continues to grow,so does the demand for elder care. Whenour loved ones can no longer live by them-selves at home, we have to make a big deci-sion … who is going to take care of them?We also have to ask ourselves how muchcan we afford? What are their needs? Andhow would they feel about going to anassisted living facility?

More often than not, your loved one isgoing to want to stay right in their ownhome because there is nothing like the com-fort and security of home when you’re ill, confused or recovering from an illness.Research shows that even for those livingwith chronic illness and disability, living at

home is often the best option for physicaland mental wellbeing. Additionally, it’soften significantly less expensive thanassisted living options. It provides themwith the dignity and independence theydesire. And it can also help prevent or post-pone hospital or nursing home care.

To better fill the home care needs of theTri-Cities and Southside Virginia, three well-respected and highly sought after home carecompanies have joined forces under the nameof Personal Care Preferred Group (PCPG).This combined network of home care compa-nies, including Personal Touch Home CareServices, Southern Touch Healthcare Servic-es and Moore Home Care Services, raises thestandards of at-home care, because it canprovide a wider variety of services and bet-ter employee benefits than many other homecare companies. The upgraded employee ben-efits attract the most qualified and profes-

sional staff in the region, resulting in a high-er level of care.

PCPG’s Registered Nurses, NursingAssistants and Personal Care Aides pro-vide a wide variety of health related servic-es in the home, assistance with activities ofdaily living and companionship. Whetherit’s long-term or short-term at-home sup-port that’s needed for seniors, the disabled, new parents, individuals recovering fromillnesses, injury or surgery, or anyone wholacks the time or energy to get everythingdone in a day, PCPG has a personal careaide that can assist.

Depending on the type and length of assis-tance required, services can be funded bylong-term insurance, worker’s compensation,Medicaid support, private-pay or other meth-ods. For more information on how PCPG canhelp someone you know, call 1-800-598-9854 orvisit www.pcpgonline.com.

Hales Insurance Agency isbelieved to be the second oldestbusiness that was started in Colo-nial Heights, beginning in busi-ness in 1954, two years after the E.Alvin Small Funeral Home. How-ever, it’s safe to assume that dur-ing that time, it was one of a veryfew that was started and co-ownedby a woman.

Her husband, Joseph C. Hales Sr.,had been in the insurance businessfor a few years before contractingpolio in 1952. Joe — who served hiscountry in World War II — camehome and drove a truck for Pepsi-Cola for a few years before startinghis journey in the insurance busi-ness.

While Joe was unable to work,Mary needed to provide for their

young family. So with the help ofTravelers Insurance – who gave anagency contract to a woman with lit-tle insurance background – Marystarted the business while Joe con-tinued his recovery.

Mary began the business out ofthe family’s home on RichmondAvenue; first in a converted coveredporch, and later a new addition. Herhusband joined the operation andthe business outgrew these crampedspaces. So the family and the busi-ness moved to a new home at thesame location — 664 Boulevard.

Joe had lost the use of his legs butnot his spirit or resolve and the twoof them together built a successfulbusiness that has been maintainedfor three generations and over halfa century.

Joe and Mary built a business thatwas based on superior service for afair price and that tradition contin-ues today. Joe started with his rootsin life and health insurance andthen moved the business into a full-fledged independent agency offer-ing personal insurance and busi-ness insurance, along with the lifeand health protection. He wasalways the focal point of the agencyand his family, both from his visiblepresence in his braces or wheel-chair to his booming voice and easylaugh. If you came into the officehis desk was front and center andhe would likely be the first person togreet you.

Joe never let his disability slowhim down or affect the way thathe lived his life. He always had acar outfitted with hand controlsfor the gas and brake and lateradded a car-top wheelchair lift.He drove all over the country andhad a valid permit until hereached age 90.

Business improved steadily afterJoe Hales Jr. joined the family busi-ness in 1964, so they moved theagency across the street to PickwickSquare Shopping Center in 1971.The business continued to add fami-ly members as another son, Harry, and a daughter, Ivey, joined thegrowing business.

Eventually outgrowing this shop-ping center space, the businessmade its final move in 1977; takingover the large front yard of the fam-ily residence on the Boulevard. There have been two more addi-tions, but this is still where theoffice resides today.

Many other family members haveworked in this true “family busi-ness,” Joe Jr.’s wife Betty Lou, Joe

Sr.’s brother William Hales, Ivey’sson and daughter, Scott and Kimber-ly, and Joe Jr.’s son Jody. The agencyis also blessed to have two long-termemployees, Trudy Davis and LindaWade, and looks forward to welcom-ing back Cathy Williams, who willbegin work at the agency for herthird time later this month whenher husband is reassigned back toFort Lee.

Mary took advantage of a well-deserved retirement after workingfor 30 years, but she and Joe Sr. con-tinued to live in the residenceattached to the office. She was a fre-quent and welcome visitor in theoffice, which functions as much as afront door to the house and an entryto a commercial operation; welcom-ing visitors, family, and long-timecustomers.

Mary passed away on May 7, 2008at the age of 88, falling just short ofher and Joe Sr’s. 70th wedding anni-versary in November. She is remem-bered fondly by family and friendsnot just as business pioneer, but alsoas a loving mother to three, grand-mother to seven and great-grand-mother to 10, and a true friend tomany that she met over a long andfruitful life.

Joe passed away a year later onApril 3, 2009 at the age of 90. JoeHales Sr. was truly the corner-stone and the “commanding pres-ence” of Hales Insurance. Hemade a lasting impression on allof his customers, employees andfamily members and his memorylives on everyday at 664 Boulevard. Both Joe and Mary Hales are thefoundation of Hales InsuranceAgency. Their commitment to thecustomers continues on today atHales Insurance Agency.
