Appropriateness for industrial launderingMost BP products have been awarded the PRO label. A product marked in this way meets the requirement of standard ISO 30023. It has been tested for suitability for industrial laundering in accor-dance with ISO 15797, namely using washing programmes (1-8), in the tunnel finished and/or tumble dryer. However, the PRO label does not issue any specific care instructions. As a rule, real-life test washes in an industrial laundry should be carried out before using any BP® product.

Some of our products do not carry the PRO label. Nevertheless, they may be washed in an industrial laundry in certain circum-stances. Extensive test washes should be carried out on these products especially, to ensure the correct care procedures are used. We classify our products’ appropriateness for industrial laundering as follows:

Low appropriateness for industrial laundering:≤ 40 °C, air drying

Medium appropriateness for industrial laundering:≤ 60 °C, 1 dot tumble drying

High appropriateness for industrial laundering:≤ 75 °C, 2 dot tumble drying

Successful cleaning and the wear and tear on clothing are determined by the following four basic parameters: chemistry, mechanics, temperature, time (Sinner’s Circle). To keep things simple, the classification above only considers the washing and drying temperature. The other factors should naturally also be taken into account when carrying out real-life test washes.

ELIMINATING HARMFUL SUBSTANCES. Some suppliers are bluesign® system suppliers. This label eliminates harmful substances right from the beginning of the manufacturing process, and sets and controls standards to ensure environmentally friendly and safe production.

SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS ACTIONS. Some suppliers and producers are STeP-certified. STeP comprehensively analyses whether companies and pro-duction facilities are sustainably managing all relevant areas, such as chemicals management, environmental management, occupational health and safety, social responsibility and quality management.

FAIRTRADE COTTON. We make every effort to purchase the cotton needed to manufacture the BPlus Green collection under Fairtrade conditions. During processing, Fairtrade-certified cotton may be mixed with non-certified cotton.Because farmers can sell larger quantities of their cotton through the Fairtrade Sourced Cotton Model, not only are fairer trade conditions available to them but it also creates new opportunities for social change and more environmental protection. SUSTAINABLE SUPPLY CHAIN. The Partnership for Sustainable Textiles is a government initiative of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and aims to ensure social, ecological and economic standards along the entire textile chain in the clothing industry. BP® is actively involved in the Partnership for Sustainable Textiles.

TESTED FOR HARMFUL SUBSTANCES.Our responsibility also means that our products are harmless in terms of human ecology. That is why all BP® products are tested for harmful substances and most are certified in accordance with Oeko-Tex® Stand-ard 100.

OUR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY.The aim of the FAIR WEAR FOUNDATION is to im prove working conditions for people working in the inter-national clothing industry. BP® has now been named Fair Wear Leader five times in succession.

When reviewing the sustainability in the textile chain, we work with high-profile institutions in order to create this transparency. For environmental sustainability, we focus on three principles: eliminate, reduce and recycle. We feel that eliminating, meaning a sparing use of resources, is especially important. We are convinced that the long-lasting nature of BP® products is one of the biggest contributions to sustainability because it saves valuable resources and preserves the environment.

Take, for example, the BP® Work trousers 1820 with knee pad pockets from our BPlus collection. It takes cotton and recycled polyester to make them. They comprise 53 pattern pieces, 528 metres of yarn and the BP® logo – our quality seal. Our sewers lovingly turn these resources into a pair of trousers.

But if we use all of our expertise, our finely tuned quality management systems and our passion for quality to double the lifespan of our products, we can help to conserve valuable resources to make a pair of trousers that we sell by the thousand.

And if we then include all of our BP® products, we are talking about a good few million items of clothing per year.

Thinking about sustainability thus makes perfect sense. Long- lasting products are sustainable. And they make a real difference to the people involved in the value creation, to the environment and, ultimately, to the people who wear our clothes.

PET bottles are collected, washed and broken down into flakes.

The flakes are melted and formed into pellets.

The pellets are melted again and formed into recycled fibres.

Then these fibres are used to make BPlus Green products.

The BPlus Green products are made of 65% recycled polyester and 35% cotton. We purchase the quantity of cotton required to produce BPlus Green under Fairtrade conditions. This not only provides cotton farmers with fairer trade conditions but it also creates new opportuni-ties for social change and more environmental protection.
