Boyd H. Graeber
I recently made a stop to my college’s Special Collections & University Archives.Boyd H. Graeber had attended Iowa State Teachers College or I.S.T.C. (what is nowknown as University of Northern Iowa), around the early 1920s. His daughter, SusanCagni, had found an old memory book of his and sent it to UNI in 2012. Seven yearslater, I was assigned to take a look at it and see what details I could pull from it.
Boyd attended the I.S.T.C. for twosemesters and stayed in his dormitoryover summer months. He must havebeen very close with his “inmates” inBernard, for he had many “friends o’mine” entries in the front of his memorybook and Boyd also had filled the entire

memory book of photos of his friendsand people he knew going to school atthat time. He even had a picture ofPresident Seerley in this bookammoungest other pictures of hisfriends. These days, I really doubt theschool president would want me to takea picture of him just to put it into a bookI would keep forever. But times likenow, it is unnecessary due to the factthe technology is so different from nowand the 1920’s. Bernard Hall was theoff campus residence of Boyd whileattending school at I.S.T.C. He hadtaken many photos of his “inmates”inside and outside of the home. Therewere many group photos taken on theporch of Bernard, and even a groupphoto was taken on May-Day of 1922.

Another large detail of this memorybook was that maybe Boyd attended orparticipated in a May-Day parade. Hemust have taken a picture of every floatin the parade. There was a picture ofmany floats made by many differentcompanies of people. The photo that Ilooked more into detail with was a floatmade by an art team or an artdepartment of some sort. This float wasmade on top of an old car, and wascovered in flowers with the word “ART”made in flowers on the side of the float. Each float was different, and I could notdecipher if he had worked on a floathimself or not.

Boyd never really made himselfapparent in this book. I never was ableto find a clear picture of him, for henever labeled pictures of himself. Theonly picture to come close ofrecognition was a photo of him, hissiblings, and his parents, titled “TheFamily”. But why would he need tomake himself known? After all, it was abook made for him to remember hisfriends and times at school.
