Aero launch a revolution in bowlsI’d just like to congratulate the bowlers of

Queensland for their amazing hospitality and generosity. In the six weeks I was in the Sunshine State, we together raised over $6000 for Cancer research. To all the clubs that hosted me, thank you for your warm welcome. I’ll see you all again next time I’m up north for the winter. I am now currently in Taree, heading south. I’ll be in Newcastle City and suburbs from Sept 28 to Oct 7. Then the Tourkley area before heading to Woy Woy on or about Oct 13. Onward to Manly and northern Sydney by Oct 22, the city and southern Sydney by the end of October, hopefully playing at every club in those areas. The Cancer Council bowls shirts are $49 each. The pink ribbon ones for the ladies range in size from 8 to 24. The blue ribbon ones for the fellas range from XS to 5XL. That should cover everyone out there. Give Chris a call to help him break the Guinness Book of Records of playing at the most clubs in one year and at the same time raising money for Cancer Research.

8 BOWLS PLUS QUEENSLAND OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2014

The 2014 Silver Nugget took place at Tweed Heads Bowls Club earlier this year when the best Under-25 bowlers from around the country gathered for the 3 day event and it was Kristina Krstic from WA who took out the trophy, winning the ladies final.

Kristina looked unstoppable throughout the tournament, never dropping a game. “We had the sectionals first,” she said, “with two sections of 6 girls. The first in each section went straight in to the semis and then the second in each played off in a quarter final. The most difficult was against Renee (McPharlin), which it always is! The score for that one was 21-20 so it was a close game.”

“After going through to the semi I played Renee again and it was a another close one. I went on to play Kelly Richards from NSW in the final which finished up 21-17. “It was hard to believe that I’d won, to begin with. I was so stoked, it was definitely one of my career highlights.

“Everyone kept asking what bowls I was using! It was very windy and the greens were really

quick so I was using Henselite Fusions. It was very difficult for bowlers using other bowls to find their line but the Fusions kept such a true line that I was really confident with them. That was one of the things that really gave me an edge over everyone else.”

“Another thing was my positivity, because I can get quite negative with myself sometimes. In singles you don’t have anyone to encourage you or help you with shot selection so it can be difficult to stay upbeat. But I’ve been working on this and matured in this area so I kept my head up all the way.”

Winning the Silver Nugget scored Kristina an invitation to the prestigious Golden Nugget tournament where some of the World’s best bowlers compete for the annual trophy. After a few weeks back home in WA she boarded a plane to be back at Tweed Heads Bowls Club on. But it wasn’t all bowls for Kristina who is studying, she spent time with her books as well. “I’d already missed a week of Uni for the Silver Nugget but luckily there was Wi-Fi where I stayed so I’spent my evenings catching up!”

WA’s Kristina Krstic Wins the Silver Nugget

Bulls Continue to Charge in Division 5

Broadbeach has successfully defended its Division 5 pennant title.

Last year the Bulls not only won the Gold Coast Tweed Division but also the South East Queensland Championship. We had four men returning from last years team, it was a mix of new bowlers and new blood into the team. Team Manager & skip Ian Miller had a dominating rink win in the preliminary final over Paradise Point on Saturday morning to secure a birth in the grand final. Paradise Point was again the opponents on Sundays Grand Final and Musgrave Hill Bowling Club.

Tony Cattanach’s got off to a flying start with Ray Ganderton and Rob Pollock peppering the jack to set up the heads. Tony along with third

Trevor Bennett secured a good margin victory. Trevor Forward was the player of the final drawing and converting heads to secure a rink victory with Brian MacNIcol, Brian Smart and Barry Matheson handing him support. Ian Millers team of John Fihelly, Tony Askew and Doug Dunstan kept their rink close and secured the Division 5 flag. Good luck to the Bulls when they try to recapture the South East Queensland title later in the year.

The Innovator

Barry Hamer

A form of bowls games was played 2000 years ago and has evolved into a sport enjoyed by many socially and internationally. Since then the gathering speed of the evolution of lawn bowls, and stiff completion from competing sports over the past 20 years has accelerated past the time when lawn bowls once considered amongst the most played sports during the 60s in NSW has lost that ranking, so how should that situation be addressed? For starters, considering the somewhat unique demographics and scope of our game played by the very young to very old any time any place day or night indoors and outdoors, surly that’s a worthy platform to build upon and developing further? The above just about sums up the flexibility and accessibility to play lawn bowls in NSW, the venues are close by and facilities are

Now that the Commonwealth Games are over, pondering the wonderful final ceremony and medals won by our amazing athletes overall, now is the time to evaluate and look towards Gold at Surfers Paradise in Queensland hopefully to increase medals for Lawn Bowls. Congratulations must go to our lawn bowls medal winners with the hope that more will follow at the Gold Coast on home soil. • Triples Silver: Kelsey Cottrell, Karen Murphy, and Lynsey Clarke.• Fours Bronze: Wayne Ruediger, Brett Wilkie, Nathan Rice, and Matthew Flapper.• Para-sport mixed pairs bronze: (Julie Foster & Jones) Tony Scott & Peter Scott. Australia’s proven capacity to successfully promote major international sporting events coupled with ideal weather, excellent planning and development must be matched by the preparation and training of our lawn bowls side for the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. The good news is that Australia has an abundance of very talented lawn bowlers hav-ing the potential to win gold medals. However the bad news is that in spite of the gallant efforts of our talented bowlers

THE GAMES ARE OVER -

SO LET’S EVALUATEcompeting at the games in Scotland, the lawn bowls media coverage was almost non-existent, hardly what one would call motivating? Recalling the familiar phrase “why is it so” often stated by a famous TV Scientist presenter long ago, perhaps the bowling fraternity must urgently address that question also to develop ways and means to lift the profile and perceived credibility of our game as observed by the media, sponsors, and the general public today?

To be fair and to the point, how can gifted or high profile bowlers widely spread over large distances around Australia be discovered, groomed and be matched into teams and sides ready for events such as the Commonwealth games? One solution dare I say once again is to critically address the dreaded subject regarding “professionalism” a matter that has been covered and tossed around for years in bowling circles in spite of the fact that some talented groups of lawn bowlers have been enticed and remunerated in various ways since the 70s and good luck to them. Combine that situation with the multitude of Quasi professional competitions, the failed Premier league, miscellaneous competitions, and the way some pennant teams are paid, surely the bleeding obvious demands that

urgent attention planning and formatting of such issues is essential to create a truly transparent and professional approach to our game. At a time when most other high profile sports have established professionalised elite levels, surely it must be time for our lawn bowls administrations in Australia to seriously consider the daunting task of addressing professionalism before another group decides to do it for us? Therefore considering the vast distances between bowling clubs throughout Australia, demographics and the sheer gravity of the issues inhibiting such concepts must be comprehensively explored with open minds to enable lawn bowls in Australia to become more dynamic and creditable competing on the world stage from now on. To some this may appear to be mission impos-sible, therefore every available resource must be engaged to create an achievable project to strive for by addressing Policies, Distances, Formats, Training, Selections, and Uniformity listed above to be explored next month. Everything on that list fully developed and matched up has the capacity to win or lose medals so switch on the iron and get hot up ready for the heat of battle ahead. Go for gold all? The Innovator, Barry Hamer

TOO MANY LAWN BOWLS FORMATS?excellent; so why has our game failed to attract and maintain membership and status since the 60s? Well for starters articles in my innovations columns since 1991 have regularly addressed the above featuring comprehensive issues of relevant innovations however addressing that and many other important issues for responses still remain unanswered by occupants of so called Ivory Towers? Therefore, now that the Commonwealth games are well over” “time to evaluate” formats and rules may well be an appropriate time right now? Rules and formats for every sport must be such that all players and their viewers must be able to easily interact, follow and relate to what’s going on during the playing of any sport in progress?

Ignoring articles addressing many rules and

formats without critical examination and feedback constantly raised by players including my columns must do very little to attract and enrich lawn bowls and spectator participation. Well like all organisations change may be painful, sometimes bordering on the impossible therefore all must seriously consider in our case, the issues needing most urgent attention to be up there with other competing sports to attract membership, sponsorships, and media interest by creating well researched credible and exciting formats for approval. Therefore putting aside politics and channel vision, the bleeding obvious is that lawn bowls overall now has a real opportunity review, evaluate, refine and create lawn bowls formats worthy of serious evaluation and presentation for the future and wellbeing of our game. Although I have already touched on this topic before, allow me to commence this series by

Page 11: Bowls plus qld oct nov 2014 web

OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2014 BOWLS PLUS QUEENSLAND 11

addressing the way the three games below shape up on the green and in the minds of the players already grappling with the varying rules and formats introduced at various venues right now. As lawn bowls is a universally played home and abroad game, its formats and rules must also be universal not only to be credible and playable but be clearly understood by all players new and old competing and being fully aware of the wellbeing of our game’s future. Put simply lawn bowls in NSW has far too many rules and formats often introduced without much notice and extensive research, therefore with feedback and interaction by my readers during this series can re-address and introduce key innovations relevant to this series commencing with the formats and rules of the core games below.• Singles • Pairs • Fours

Although clearly defined in our official rule book each one of the above events have been amended officially and unofficially by bowling members and club committees over many years, now is an opportunity to submit your good ideas. As I am assembling the list of issues for next months column to be addressed, readers may wish to submit their pet issue for evaluation by Email to me: [email protected] Note that the above email address is open for your confidential feed back on innovations or suggestions regarding the welfare and status of our game. Three sample issues for starters:- (a) Should Pairs matches be played in top competition as specified the NSW rule book?

(b) Should Triples be dropped from serious competition and be only played socially?

(c) Should penalty points be introduced during top matches in progress? Think BIG readers... regards, The Innovator, Barry Hamer

DID 2002 Australian comedy Crackerjack help boost interest in lawn bowls, treat the sport as a joke or should we, the audience, simply sit back, laugh and not think too deeply about it?For me, the movie was an enjoyable experience that featured some great performances from actors such as Bill Hunter, Samuel Johnson, John Clarke, Frank Wilson and Mick Molloy, who wrote the script with his brother Richard (who also directed the movie).

Yes, it poked some fun at those who love being involved in their “jack high” sport, but it also made no secret in expressing how important sporting clubs are to communities and how passionate members of these clubs are when it comes to their turf and the history that has been developed over many years.

It is now 12 years since the movie was released, but remains an enjoyable part of Australian film history. It is certainly not a masterpiece and I don’t think Australian comedian Mick or Richard attempted to make an all-time classic. What they did accomplish, however, was develop an entertaining script that remained true to the sport and captures the authenticity of a sporting club at a grass-roots level.

Both Mick and Richard conducted what they called a “kerbside crawl” while developing the script and this clearly pays off as it features instances of over regulation, the egos that can clash within a club and what is truly important to small clubs that face dwindling memberships, the battle to attract younger players and looking at ways to reignite interest while remaining true to those who have come before them.

Crackerjack

I’m sure many lawn bowls clubs have faced similar problems and are now constantly looking into the future through new ideas and initiatives.

The movie is based around Jack Simpson (Mick Molloy), who is a fairly slack and unmotivated bloke who seems to revel in scamming the local lawn bowls club for what he considers to be extremely envious car park spaces.

Jack’s grand plan, however, comes crashing down when he meets the Cityside Lawn Bowls Executive – and is forced to either do his bit for the club or face the consequences.

Jack is initially very reluctant to do his fair share, but gradually he becomes a solid (if not spectacular) member of the club who slowly develops a love for the sport of lawn bowls and his club mates.

Things heat up for Jack and his lawn bowling mates when the club not only enters financial difficulty, but also the threat from Bernie Fowler – the self-appointed “Pokies King”.It is here that the usual scene of sportsmanship and good will on the greens is replaced with a battle ground mentality that has good fighting evil.

The usually peaceful greens become a battlefield, where young meets old, greed meets good, and people rise to the occasion in extraordinary circumstances.

Crackerjack is an enjoyable experience and hopefully for those of you who love this sport, it was a movie that depicts what is truly important to those who give so much to their clubs. Adam Blom

12 BOWLS PLUS QUEENSLAND OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2014

Changes to the second $100,000 Australian Premier League have been unveiled at the public launchSeptember’s public launch of the second $100,000 Australian Premier League in Brisbane’s Queen Street Mall has provided a glimpse of the changes in store for the ground-breaking competition this year, including the unveiling of the two franchise teams.

Crackerjack star and APL ambassador Mick Molloy officially revealed the new-look competition, which will be staged again at Club Pine Rivers from November 18 to 21, in the heartland of Brisbane’s CBD shopping precinct alongside representatives from each of the eight teams on September 12.

The newly formed Gold Coast Hawks contingent headlined the announcement, declaring their intention to snare the coveted silverware away from cross town rivals Brisbane Gold with the naming of three formidable Club Helensvale-based Australian Jackaroos.

Commonwealth Games gold medallist Lynsey Clarke and international spearhead Nathan Rice have been selected for berths in the Fox Sports live broadcast event, lining-up in the Hawks’ green and yellow strip alongside world champion Brett Wilkie, who crosses to his

home club-based team after a one-year outing for the Perth Suns, which resulted in a semi-final finish.

Taking Wilkie’s spot in the Bowls WA-based Suns this year will be Tom Mitchell, joining former Northern Irish international turned Australian World Cup winner Jeremy Henry and Western Australian representative Clive Adams from last year’s event.

It’s full steam ahead for the Murray Steamers, based out of the Moama Bowling Club in NSW, after securing the monumental signings of two of the sport’s highest profile international heavy-hitters for their maiden attempt at the competition.

Scotland’s dual 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games gold medallist Alex Marshall and Canada’s singles silver medallist Ryan Bester, have inked contracts that will see them take to the green for the Murray Steamers, with Moama’s Michael Walker providing a localised element to the border-town team.

Inaugural winners Brisbane Gold’s team structure remains untouched, with world champion Mark Casey showing faith despite the formation and strong connection his Club Helensvale-based Gold Coast Hawks.

Also remaining with the Club Pine Rivers based Gold team are 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Kelvin Kerkow OAM

and Queensland representative Robbie Wild.

The Melbourne Roys outfit also remains unchanged, with Scottish world champion Graeme Archer, 20 year-old Australian Jackaroo Dylan Fisher and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Matthew Flapper again tasked with leading the charge for the Fitzroy Victoria Bowls and Sports Club based contingent.

Despite a bottom of the ladder finish last year, the Sydney Lions are confident National Coach Steve Glasson, current triple world champion Karen Murphy and Bowls Australia’s triple International Bowler of the Year Aron Sherriff can make amends for the Club Mount Lewis team this season.

Adelaide Endurance and the New Zealand Blackjacks have each announced one positional change to their line-ups in an attempt to progress further than their runner-up and semi-final finishes respectively.

South Australian representative Simon Dorr joins the Bowls SA-based Adelaide team, replacing Mark Haines, alongside the inaugural tournament’s MVP, Scott Thulborn and Jackaroos world champion Wayne Ruediger, with the new combination hopeful of going one step further this year.

St Johns Park’s 17 year-old Jamie-Lee Worsnop etched her name into the record books after claiming a maiden Australian Indoor Championships crown in late August, becoming the youngest ever winner of the event in either gender.

Meanwhile, in the blockbuster men’s final, it was former English Commonwealth Games gold medallist David Holt, who now also calls Sydney’s St Johns Park home, that prevailed to claim his second Australian title after a string of indoor and outdoor trophies abroad.

The $30,000 event boasts a rich history, dating back to 1988 in the men’s field and 2003 in the women, but it was an up-and-coming rising star who prevailed over an international veteran in the women’s final decider to secure a unique slice of history and the $6,000 winner’s cheque that accompanies the national title.

Worsnop took a couple ends to adjust to the conditions of the Tweed Heads televised show rink, dropping a shot on the first two ends to former Scottish International Kay Moran, before posting scores on the next five consecutive ends to blast away to an 8-2 lead, and mitigated the damage on the penultimate and final end to secure a 8-5 first set.

The pint sized international heavyweight and the straight-faced promising young-gun traded blows over the second set, with just a one shot margin in Worsnop’s favour after the penultimate end.

Having claimed the first set, Worsnop could afford to give up one shot, but no more, on the last end to tie the set and clinch a one-and-a-half set victory, but found herself down 2 shots with just final bullet to be fired.

Tony Grantham, while recently crowned Commonwealth Games singles champion Jo Edwards and master blaster Ali Forsyth return to the fold.

Collectively, six Commonwealth Games gold medallists and 12 world champions will take part in the $100,000 APL02 event.

The Australian Premier League will be shown live on Fox Sports nationally and SkyTV in New Zealand each night of the November 18 to 21 competition, from 5.00pm-10.00pm AEST, while free entry and rink-side deck viewing will be on offer at Brisbane’s Club Pine Rivers.

Taking it in her stride, she delivered a clutch drive that ricocheted off the shot bowl and knocked out Moran’s second shot to secure her first senior national title with a tied second set, 8-all.

“It was such a close game the whole waythrough,” Worsnop said after prevailing.

“Every player here is amazing so I was stoked to even get this far.

“To make it up here through the qualifying was a great achievement in itself, but it’s something special to win in at 17.”

In the men’s final decider, it was also a New South Welshmen that was left holding the silverware, with Holt prevailing over 2010 event winner, and Australian Jackaroos vice-captain, Brett Wilkie, 9-6, 4-7, 2-1.

Holt, who moved from England to Australia in 2002, earned his second national title in 10 months, coincidentally the only two that come with automatic entry into a world event to represent Australia.

“When I came to Australia 12 years ago, I actually thought the Aussie Indoor would be my cup of tea because I played a lot of indoor and actually managed an indoor club, but I guess its taken my quite a while to achieve it,” Holt said after his win.

“The highlight of my year was supposed to be the World Champion of Champions in Christchurch”.

After my previous article about ‘Butterflies’ (pre-performance nerves), I have been asked to explain ‘How do we get our Butterflies to fly in formation’ that is how do we make best use of our nerves and anxiety before a match. We all have individual differences in own optimal level of anxiety that leads to best performance. If our pre performance anxiety is too high or too low, performance will deteriorate.

I could fill this article with relaxation exercises, breathing techniques, yoga and positive self talk, all very helpful and important techniques to combat nerves and anxiety. I believe they can only help if we are also very well prepared in all four performance areas, Physical, Technical, Mental and Tactical.

The better prepared we are in all

performance areas the more relaxed we will be before and during a match.

To train our Butterflies we first need to train ourselves. How many of us bowlers are training, practising or being coached in all four areas of performance?Lawn Bowls is considered to be a closed target sport similar to archery, golf and shooting, that is played not only individually as in singles but also as a team. Bowls is a game of skill that requires whole body movement by stepping into a forward lunge to allow the bowling arm to perform an underarm throwing action to propel the bowl along the ground towards the target. A bowling athlete needs to be able to hit the target consistently over an extended period of time.

Before we start training our Butterflies, we first need to consider some basic requirements:• Careful selection of equipment, e.g. Correct bowl size and weight, to match hand size and muscular strength. The greens you mostly play on are to be considered if possible. It also aids correct technique.• Good technique that maximizes efficiency of movement to minimize fatigue and injury.• Sound preparation: including general fitness, good nutrition. Warm up and stretching before and after a game. This improves

range of motion and helps prevent injury.• Environmental awareness. e.g. Sun-smart, nutri-

tion and hydration.

Why Physical, Technical, Mental and Tactical?

The inter-relationship between all these training factors requires them to be considered separately as well as in conjunction with each other. The performance in one will affect all others to some degree.

Physical training will prepare the bowler for the consistent performance of the action required to bowl over extended periods of time. To achieve this, the athlete will need: • aerobic fitness and endurance• flexibility in lower body, bowling arm, wrist and shoulder• muscular strength, endurance and power• core stability, strength and balance• sun smart habits with good nutrition and hydration Technical training is to develop and perfect technique. Work on basic and advanced skills. In

bowls these include the draw shot, conversion, controlled weight shot, and the drive.

Mental skills are of utmost importance in a closed target sport like lawn bowls. Here we develop concentration skills, visualization, and focus. We work on relaxation skills, positive self talk and breathing exercises.

Tactical training will prepare the athlete for game situations to out play their opponents. This is achieved through game simulation exercises, shot selection, including individual and team strategies. Game plans.

Next time you are watching any high standard match, preferably of elite bowlers, take the time to observe the players.• Are they focused and concentrated on the right thing at the right time?• Do they control their emotions most of the time?• Do they display low anxiety and appear composed under pressure?• Are they self disciplined?

More often than not the answer to the above four questions will be yes. Then ask yourself. How did they achieve this level of control and confidence?

‘Anxiety is one key factor in sports performance, which can affect or influence all elements of our performance. If your bowls performance is low due to anxiety, {out of control Butterflies} ask yourself: Am I well prepared in all four performance elements?’

Australian Open entries now open!

Australia has been given a further chance to strike gold at the World Junior Championships on the Gold Coast in November.

Having already confirmed the line-ups for the Under-25 international event last April, the National Selection Panel has recently advised that Bolivia Millerick will fill a positional vacancy at the inaugural tournament, partnering with Japan’s Tomoyuki Tamachi in the mixed pairs.

Millerick, an Australia A squad member based out of Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast, is a natural choice, according to National Coach Steve Glasson.

“I’m delighted to confirm Bolivia as Australia’s ‘extra player’ for the World Junior Championships,” Glasson said.

“She fits all the criteria and the exposure and experience she will get out of an event of this magnitude will be priceless.”

Pulling on the green and gold guernsey for Australia will be the sport’s youngest Australian Jackaroos representative, the APL’s Melbourne Roys’ spearhead Dylan Fisher, Bowls Australia’s 2013 Under-18 Male Bowler of the Year Sean Ingham, who boasts a home-ground advantage, National Champion of Champion pairs runner-up Kristina Krstic and reigning Under-18 Female Bowler of the Year Chloe Stewart.

Each player boasts a chance to walk away with two gold medals from the event, with all four taking to the green in the boys’ and girls’ singles, while Stewart and Fisher, and Krstic and Ingham will partner for the mixed pairs competition.

The World Junior Cup will be staged at Broadbeach Bowls Club from November 10 to 16.

There are so many stories relating to the “war to end all wars”, that they could almost fill a library on their own; stories of bravery, sacrifice, folly and stupidity abound. But there are also largely untold stories…

When war was declared about 30% of the eligible male population of Australia enlisted. At that time, we were a distant part of “mother Eng-land” and since there were so many references to “back home” in conversation a lot of the younger children could be forgiven for believing that their real home was in England, much the same as colonists in other parts of the empire did. Some more recent immigrants had previously served in the British armed forces and many had no hesitation in enlisting in the Australian army where their previous training was greatly appreciated.

So there was a great deal of patriotism as well as the sense of adventure that saw so many go to war. Casualties were horrendous and of those who did return, many were changed forever and

GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918 The Forgotten Women

never returned to the towns where they grew up. The reduced number of eligible males meant that there were a lot of young women who would never marry and this had a devastating impact on the smaller country towns. The memorials that are such a landmark in parks and in churches all over the country only tell a part of the tale.

How many young women never got the chance to marry and have a family, simply because there was such a shortage of young men? How many parents of these young women never experienced the blessings that grandchildren bring? What were the ongoing consequences for our country?

Researching family history in the periods following the “war to end all wars” will see many families come across so-called maiden aunts; spinsters who remained at home looking after ageing parents and finally “retiring” to a solitary life in middle age. Do we wonder why these women never married? Many took on membership of churches or organizations such as the Salvation Army where they found comfort with like-minded and similarly placed individuals.

How many of these women were unseen casualties of war?

On commemoration days we all should reflect with pride and awe on the bravery and sacrifice of those who safeguard our freedom and way of life and the families of those who make the ultimate sacrifice. But perhaps think also of others who are left behind and the loneliness and terrible sadness that engulfs so many and lasts so long.

Someone once said something like; ‘in war, there are no winners, just survivors’.

Henselite’s NSW manager David Holt really proved he practices what he preaches with another huge win at the Australian Indoor Championships at Tweed Heads Bowls Club in August.

Feeling like a change from his usual Size 4 Dreamline XG in the White Breaker colour that he has used for a while now, David simply picked up a different set in bright pink Coral colour for the trip north and took to them like a breeze.

In the final against 2010 winner and Australian vice-captain Brett Wilkie, although David made the better start to the game and took out the first set 9-6, Brett wasn’t going to give up lightly and turned on some amazing shots to take the second 7-4.

After two ends of the tie-break again the ends were tied at one shot each with this epic confrontation coming down to the winner of the final end. With the shot changing hands pretty much with every bowl delivered it was anyone’s guess who would take out the title but agonisingly for Brett his last drive shot with David holding two shots hit the jack but only managed to feather it about a quarter of an inch and David was champion.

“Any win against Brett is a great one but particularly up here on the Tweed carpet that he knows so well is particularly satisfying” said David. “I’ve been here quite a few times before and struggled a little but my Dreamline XG found a really consistent line on every rink I played this week”.

Having won the outdoor Australian Champion of Champions title in Adelaide last October David now gets the stupendous opportunity to represent his adopted country as Australia’s representative in both World Champion of Champions in Christchurch at the end of November and now the 2015 World Cup at Warilla next April.

Having been involved in coaching at the highest level for the best part of 20 years, Dobbins said he felt the time was right to make the difficult decision to retire, with the best interest of the sport at heart.

“I know I will miss the challenge of being directly involved with our current and future Australian representatives, however I feel at this time, it is the right move,” Dobbins said.

“This decision has been made in the best interest of the sport, and not for me personally, but to assist in ensuring viability for the High Performance program and succession planning for the future.

“I would like to take this opportunity to wish all at Bowls Australia every success in the future and look forward to witnessing continued success on

Assistant National Coach Robbie Dobbins has announced his retirement from coaching after an illustrious career

Assistant National Coach Robbie Dobbins has announced his decision to retire from the Bowls Australia High Performance team, calling an end to a illustrious career that included steering the reins as coach of four national teams over the past two decades.

Dobbins, who has been second-in-charge of the sport’s high performance tiers since 2011, played an instrumental role in the Australian Jackaroos on-green success at the 2012 World Championships in Adelaide, where the nation secured five gold and two silver medals from eight disciplines - the greatest result ever produced by any nation at the event - and most recently contributed to the green and gold contingent’s four medal result from the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Dobbins steps down from coaching after two decades and four national teams

the bowling greens for all Australian teams.”

While handpicked for his current role almost four years ago by National Coach Steve Glas-son, to help shape the future of the sport on the world stage, Dobbins’ involvement with the Bowls Australia HP team dates back almost three decades, following a brief but spectacular playing career.

Selection for his international debut in 1982 proved to be a masterstroke, with his second appearance resulting in the nation’s historic first gold medal in any discipline from a Commonwealth Games, in the men’s fours on home soil in Brisbane, before a serious work accident in the coal mines put a premature holt on his career after 25 appearances.

Dobbins’ affinity for coaching began with a role as national selector in 1985, with the aim to give back to the sport that had provided him with so much enjoyment, which lead to being appointed as the nation’s first head coach of both the national men’s and women’s teams from 1994 to 1996.

The breadth of his contribution to the sport spanned much wider than just our shores though, with Dobbins playing a pivotal role in guiding Malaysia to the powerhouse status it holds today by becoming their first national coach in 1997-98, which included the 1998 Commonwealth Games, before returning home to take the control of the Australian women’s team from 2001 to 2003.

Dobbins again took the helm of the complete Australian outfit in 2004, a year that saw Glasson become the nation’s first world outdoor singles champion, before a stint as coach of Thailand in 2007 followed with a role coaching his fourth country at a national level, as the technical coach of Scotland in 2010.

Glasson said that his fellow Bowls Australia Hall of Fame member made an enormous impact on the sport across the globe during his coaching tenure.

A retiring boss wanted everyone to express their good feeling about him by writing on the farewell card on his farewell party.

He could then remember how his staff “missed” him. Most staff members were writing standard phrases like, “Without you, the company will never be the same,” “We will always remember you,” etc. The boss was not satisfied and asked, “I need something from the bottom of your heart... Peter, you have been working with me for the last 40 years. You are my best staff. What do you have to say?” Slowly but firmly, Peter wrote, “The best news in 40 years.”

The Hamilton Bowls Club is powering on and encouraging everyone to get on down to one of Brisbane North’s Premier Clubs for a social game, and enjoy all the clubs wonderful facilities.

“In order to carry a positive action we must develop here a positive vision.” The words of the Dalai Lama ring particularly true at the Samford Bowls Club, where a great vision, driven by positive action, has turned a dream into reality.

On Sunday October 19th the “friendly club”, nestled in the Samford Valley, will welcome in an exciting new era, with the official opening of the two Greengauge synthetic greens, along with a retractable shade cover. It will be a proud moment for the club, which was formed in 1948 when the land on the banks of the South Pine River was bought for just 75 pounds.

“About 12 months ago we were very concerned that the green keeping contractor was being paid so much more than the green fees we were taking in from our members,” Samford Bowls Club, Board of Management Chairman Mac Patterson said. “We (the board) knew this couldn’t go on forever and our greens needed a lot of money spent on them, so we looked around at more

successful clubs and decided to go for a synthetic green.”

With some members sceptical of the idea, the “looking around” involved 40 club members going on a discovery bus trip – and it was the stop at Buderim that forged Samford’s direction. “The club (Buderim) has a similar membership to our own and has a very successful mat down, which due to its foundations is, in our opinion, far superior to any of the others we tried,” Mr Patterson said.

The redevelopment work will also see a retract-able shade cover installed, which will have far reaching benefits.

“Because a lot of our members are getting older and everyone is more conscious of the effect of the climatic conditions here, our shade will ex-tend the bowler’s bowling life by at least five years which is quite a big percentage of the life of a bowler because so many of us come into bowling when we are fairly old people,” Mr Patterson said.

To ensure an exactness, the contractors responsible for the Buderim installation, Sportcrete Asia-Pacific Pty Ltd, were engaged to convert the surface and install the retractable shade cover.

The feat is nothing short of incredible, considering the club has achieved its vision with no state or federal government funding. “We’ve had no substantial government funding at all. We’ve come in at a bad time when both federal and state governments were tightening their purse strings,” Mr Patterson said.

“We did get a $50,000 interest free loan from the Moreton Bay Council and a $15,000 grant to help with the cost of the surrounds of the green, otherwise all the money we have raised ourselves and it’s just about $710,000.”

But while the members have given so much, they say they’ve received even more in return. “My wife Janet and I feel that this club has meant a tremendous amount to us. Yes, financially we have contributed to it but it’s done something for our health, given us a beautiful interest.” It’s this beautiful interest which has Mac and the commit-tee focused on strengthening Samford’s reputation as “the friendly club”.

“We just make a point of that and welcome everybody in. I believe everybody is made to feel welcome. We don’t have poker machines and those sorts of things. This is what a bowls club ought to be and it’s a great social gathering, we all enjoy each-other’s company and support each other,” Mr Patterson said.

The club currently has 130 members and will look to cap that at 200. “I think it’s important for members that want a game, to always be able to get a game. That’s what this is all about.”

The friendly club’s positive vision for an exciting future

22 BOWLS PLUS QUEENSLAND OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2014

On the 18 October 2012 the Clayfield and Wavell Heights Bowls Clubs in Brisbane officially merged to become the Northern Suburbs Bowls Club. In-terestingly enough, in 1999 a plan to amalgamate Clayfield and Wavell Heights Bowls Clubs began but was opposed by the then Clayfield members. An exodus of their members resulted, with Wavell Heights gaining many of its members.

History of the Clayfield Bowls Club (CBC)

The history of the CBC began in 1906 in the nearby suburb of Nundah. A green was set up by a Scotsman Robert Wylie for the public. However, members became unhappy with the train service and the green becoming inadequate to play on. In 1908 a site in Adelaide Street, Clayfield, was chosen for its closeness to tram and train. The club opened in September 1909. In 1910 a declared limit of membership of 100 was reached. From the start the club conducted many social functions to bring members, family and friends together. Many of these functions became fund raisers during the World Wars. During WW1 the green was closed and in 1919 a waiting list was in-troduced to cope with the popularity of the club.

From a start of one green with a small four rink green added in 1918, lights in 1939 with an ad-ditional full green in 1949 and the 1913 original clubhouse that was relocated and resited with many changes over the years, Clayfield devel-oped. In the 1950s the club had 200 members and in 1956 Clayfield Ladies was formed. In 2005 the clubhouse was upgraded and modernised, however, with only 100 members and no waiting list like in 1919.

Milestones were numerous with “A” and “B” pennant competition wins in the 1920’s, hosted

the 1931 Australian Fours Championship, 1970 Co-hosted Australian Championships and televised RQBA Metropolitan Singles Finals. The Centenary year of 2006 was a very special occasion with a Centenary Booklet produced which told the CBC story of 100 years of his-tory with social activities and sketch photos of members.

CBC after years of financial loss, declining membership and decisions on club operations that failed, was left with salvaging itself. While legal process continued it relocated to the Kalinga Bowls Club in 2010. Kalinga closed in 2012. Clayfield’s future was now placed in the hands of the members with three clubs, Wavell Heights, Chermside and Hendra, proposed as merger options. Wavell Heights was chosen. 106 years of history ended. History, edited from the Clayfield Bowls Club Centenary Booklet 1906-2006.

History of the Wavell Heights Bowls Club

Wavell Heights was formed in 1954. The formation of the club was the brainchild of the Neighbourhood Society, a body controlling a large area of land leased to it by the City Council. In 1957 excavation began on the building of the first green. Considerable work and fill was necessary. Part of the clubhouse was to be built on filled and reclaimed land. The presence of springs delayed the planting of grass for 12 months.

Building costs left little for a clubhouse, members began playing bowls at Brighton Bowls Club in 1956. They played there wearing the colours of ‘Bottle Green and Gold.’ In 1957 30 members, both male and female, had the privilege of trying out the green which after major drainage

problems was rebuilt. In 1958 the Ladies Club was opened. They played, prior to the greens being completed, at the former Nundah Bowls Club.

In 1960, a second green was opened and, with unsatisfactory green surfaces, the blue couch on both greens was replaced by Tifdwarf in 1963. In 1975 work began on a third green. This was built on a reclaimed rubbish dump and was without long term problems. The clubhouse began as an old prefabricated building which was bought and transported by road to Wavell Heights from Newmarket Bowls Club. In 1961 a permanent building was erected. From 1964 to 1968 permanent structures and alterations were made.

By 1986/87, membership of the men’s bowls club had risen to 280. The ladies club at Wavell Heights steadily progressed to reach a membership of 100. It was in 1963 that the Ladies’ Club won their first Metropolitan Pennant Flag and added several later. The Men’s Club won many pennant flags and in 2000 the No1 flag.

Since 2000 the club has had declining membership with resultant financial concerns that saw the club generally strived to trade profitable. The inadequate finances of the club saw Wavell see its future as bleak. Consequently, a merger proposal by Clayfield was a lifeline. In 2012 at a Special General Meeting the members of Wavell “voted unanimously to pass the motion to merge with Clayfield Bowls Club and form a new named club.” History, edited from the Wavell Heights Neighbourhood Community book.

The Formation of Northern Suburbs Bowls Club -“The Club For the Future”

In 2012, Wavell Heights agreed to conditions proposed by Clayfield for a merger to proceed, including the selection of a club name. An In-terim Committee with representatives from both clubs was formed with Clayfield’s Cam Spencer as Chairman. The First Northern Suburbs Bowls Club Management Committee was elected at the 2013 AGM with former Wavell Height’s member Merv Spada as Chairman. Spada guided the club, establishing the Northern Suburbs Bowls Club brand at the premises of the former Wavell Heights club. It was evident that the membership age would not sustain a viable club for the future. One of the first initiatives began was the establishment of proposals to recruit new members. In 2014 former Clayfield member Peter Ryan was elected Chairman and Ryan has continued these membership recruitment proposals. His major undertaking is managing the refurbishment and enhancement of the clubhouse interior. Northern Suburbs is excited about its future, although that future it would seem has not yet been defined in terms of the type of club that should be developed. Synthetic greens were considered but it was soon realised that with an ageing membership (average age 75 years) and low recruitment, that, that was folly.

In June 2014 the greens of Northern Suburbs were renamed. This renaming added two former Clayfield Life Members, Les McSweeney and George Corones names to the existing names of former Wavell Heights Foundation and Life Members Neville Osborne and Ralph Westphal.

Like most bowls clubs, Northern Suburbs is conscious of the decline in bowls. Both Clayfield and Wavell Heights struggled for several years

Tucked away in Larkhall are two clubs that ooze hospitality and friendship as well as competitive bowling. Picturesque walled lush green grounds and warm club houses with ample supplies of “pints” to quench thirsts and make any game excellent are joys to visit.

Larkhall Bowling Club was established in 1868 whereas the newcomer was established in 1928; first as Larkhall Miners Welfare Bowling Club closing in late 1981 with the destruction of the mining industry and reopening in April 1982 as Raploch Bowling Club with assistance from a community sporting grant. Both clubs rely on hard working members to maintain the greens and facilities.

With the cold winters in Scotland the bowls season runs from April to October. On the 19th of April this year Raploch BC continued the tradition of having the wife of the gents president, Robert Grant, roll the first jack and bowl for the season. This year Annette Grant had this honour. For fashion comparison you can see the difference between the fur bestoled opening in 1923 and the smart attractive attire of 2014.

Playing Bowls in Larkhall, Lanarkshire

Edition 2 of Scotland and Bowls

A feature of both clubs is the keen interest in playing three bowls triples. This format allows a good spread of social interaction and more bowls per game. Both clubs had full day events while I was visiting.

For Larkhall, the event was the William Hamilton Trophy with teams coming from Lanarkshire and Ayrshire. The day coincided with the Epsom Derby. Format of play was five sets of five ends followed by semi finals and final. Starting early in the day with breakfast interspersed with morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and then dinner the event is brimful of bowls and camaraderie. I was an onlooker dressed in my Gaythorne BC shirt and enjoyed the play and the pints. Maybe I had had a few when at afternoon tea all stopped to watch the Epsom Derby and as the geegees came up the final straight one in particular named “Australia” broke from the pack and streaked to the front and with my roaring support held off the challengers to the finish. Embarrassed? No way! The bowlers took it all in good fun and shouted me another pint. But rain became heavier and it was decided to cut out the semi finals and go straight to the final over deadly two ends with

the top two scoring teams. As it was the top two teams represented Larkhall BC and its neighbour Raploch BC for a home town showdown.

Raploch took a one shot lead on the first final end and then with a tight head Hugh Barnes, skip of Raploch, provided a two shot lead with a blockading head. With one bowl remaining of Larkhall skip, Hugh’s swan dance on the rainy rink was worthy of the Bolshoi Ballet. Larkhall’s skip, Jim Wardlaw, had other ideas. Summoning his cool experience as a past representative bowler of South Africa, with focus and smooth delivery sent his final bowl towards the well defended head, piercing the defence and took a brilliant shot. The onlookers were stunned. With rain terminating play, the trophy was declared a tie.

I sincerely wish to thank Robert Grant of Larkhall BC and John Cuthbertson of Raploch BC who with their members showed such wonderful hospitality and welcomed me warmly. Should you be visiting Scotland you too will find friends at the bowls clubs.

before the merger to retain and attract members. They both wanted a future for their clubs in bowls. The merger has secured Northern Suburbs Bowls Club’s future financially.

What is the future and is it being put into place?

It is this writer’s opinion that financial stability is fine but with no thought in using funds wisely to secure a permanent future then time will be the

decider for failure. Market Management processes that define, and rightly so, the club as a business, and not just a sporting field in bowls alone will, I think, be needed to guide a future. At little cost successful marketing can be achieved but a desire to do that and succeed is necessary. A business plan that is aligned to a strategic and tactical plan, like membership recruitment, is essential. The engagement of the community to build an inclusive, diversified club will be an important part of this process that members should want.

It is my thought that both clubs responded to the merger in an unplanned way. Ad hoc and palliative management is not a plan that builds for the future. Committees in the future will need vision, good foresight, and be adventurous in establishing a lively club that attracts the family community that is now part of the local area. To put into place operations that will financially sustain bowls playing. Consideration to a coffee shop and bistro may be a way for this. A secure children’s play area would be a catalyst for food and beverage that would establish a membership base, particularly the young families.

With clubs now more informed they should be acting on information from bowls bodies and magazines like Bowls Plus to overcome financial problems and membership decline. The Bowls Plus Magazine article, ‘The Future of Lawn Bowls,” in the April-May 2014 issue is a good example of forward thinking that should be considered. That article concludes with the following statement “One thing is certain. If some changes are not implemented, bowls will never advance and the decline will continue.” I hope this new club, Northern Suburbs, with much past history but no future plan, will not be fated like its predecessors. - Greg Mahony

The BridgeA man on his Harley was riding along a California beach when suddenly the sky clouded above his head and, in a booming voice, God said, ‘because you have tried to be faithful to me in all ways, I will grant youone wish.’

The biker pulled over and said, ‘Build a bridge to Hawaii so I can ride over anytime I want.’

God replied, ‘Your request is materialistic; think of the enormous challenges for that kind of undertaking; the supports required reaching the bottom of the Pacific and the concrete and steel it would take!

I can do it, but it is hard for me to justify your desire for worldly things.. Take a little more time and think of something that could possibly help mankind.’

The biker thought about it for a long time. Finally, he said, ‘God, I wish that I, and all men, could understand women; I want to know how she feels inside, what she’s think-ing when she gives me the silent treatment, why she cries, what she means when she says nothing’s wrong, why she snaps and complains when I try to help, and how I can make a woman truly happy.

God replied: ‘You want two lanes or four on that bridge...?”

Ugly Dave first came onto our TV screens in 1969 on Graham Kennedy’s “In Melbourne Tonight”. When Graham decided to leave the show at the end of 1969 he told the Channel 9 executives that Dave would be an ideal replacement for him, so that at the start of 1970 Dave had his own variety show right across Australia every night at 9:30.

Since those days Dave has notched up for 4000 TV appearances on shows such as Celebrity Squares, The Ugly Dave Comedy Hour, Play Your Cards Right, Celebrity Tattletales, and of course Blankety Blanks – as well as many guest appearances on dozens of other shows.

Dave’s career has had many highlights such as Gold and Platinum records his comedy albums and co-compering the Royal Variety Show at the Sydney Opera House for the Queen’s Jubilee year in 1977. Dave now resides on the Gold Coast and is still enjoying what he loves most – making people laugh! Go See Touring is thrilled that Dave is hosting a group tour to Norfolk Island in May 2015. This tiny is island located between Australia and New Zealand in the middle of the South Pa-cific Ocean. Just over 2 hours flying time from Brisbane the island boasts a pristine environment with beautiful beaches, a rugged coastline, World Heritage convict site and national parks and reserves dotted with the iconic Norfolk Island pines.

There is so much to do and see on Norfolk and Dave is looking forward to “doing time” with his group. Everything is included – flights, accommodation, great theme dinners, fabulous touring and best of all lots of fun and friendship. Oh and did we mention? Just a laugh or two along the way…. Places are limited so give the friendly staff at Go See Touring a call on 1300 551 997 and ask for more details.

Improvements in disease prevention and management have increased the life expectancy of our population and many adults maintain high levels of activity and competitive sport well into their 80s. Active older adults may end up developing a variety of sporting or activity related ailments, therefore it is important that injuries capable of causing longer-term problems are diagnosed and treated appropriately early in their appearance, and not just fobbed off as “old age aches and pains”.

Lawn bowls is a common activity for people of all ages, particularly so in the older age group. Gluteal tendinopathy is a condition frequently seen in females between the ages of 40 and 60, and usually presents with lateral hip pain that can interrupt sleep or make everyday activities difficult (such as getting up from sitting, squatting or bending). The problem may often arise due to

problems in the gluteal muscles when standing on one leg – this may be particularly relevant to lawn bowling due to repetitive going down on one leg and bending over to deliver a bowl.In lawn bowlers who suffer from this condition, there are three

common approaches that most GPs will recommend: injection, physiotherapy or adopting a wait and see approach.

Currently there is little research that supports one of these approaches over the others and so the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences is doing a study that tests these three approaches.

This study will tell us what is the most effective management approach for both short and long term success.

the kilometres of nerves in our bodyWithout sufficient magnesium to balance our over-calcified bodies, muscle and nerve functions are compromised and energy diminished Cardiologist Dr Dennis Goodman MD, in his book “Magnificent Magnesium – Your essential key to a Healthy Heart and More” says that people are unaware of how important magnesium is.He says that the right level of magnesium can help avoid heart attacks, lower blood pressure, halt muscle cramps, relieve insomnia and boost calcium absorption. Other doctors like Dr Carolyn Dean MD, ND agree. In her book “The Miracle of Magnesium “Dr Dean reports on studies of thousands of Americans and found that the very high calcium levels were contributing to a major health problem as it was depleting of the bodies of magnesium. Our bodies should have twice as much calcium as magnesium and the calcium should be kept in the bones by the magnesium.

However the studies showed that there was between 6 and 10 times as much calcium as magnesium in our bodies which resulted in chronic conditions such as arthritis, heart disease, depression, migraine, osteoporosis, kidney stones and much more. Dr Norman Shealy MD PhD and neurosurgeon – author of “Holy Water Sacred Oil” says “Deficiency of Magnesium is associated with virtually every known disease”. Dr Shealy is one of many doctors who have found that skin application –spray on and rub in magnesium “oil” or gel – can restore intracellular levels of magnesium within four to six weeks. Topically is faster and more absorbable because it by-passes the digestive system. So if you want to relieve your cramps, lift your spirits, increase your wellness and boost your health, try the spray-on magnesium oil by Ancient Minerals. This is the purest source from deep beneath the ground in Europe and is uncontaminated, unlike many sea water and inland lake sources. Alzheimer’s Queensland (AQ) is your local Queensland champion of quality dementia services both in the community and residential sector. The organization boasts a Dementia Care Hub, 3 Aged Care Homes, 5 Respite Centres, a 24hour Helpline and additional dementia education and support services.

AQ’s primary aim is to keep their clients most of whom have dementia connected within their local communities through a flexible suite of care and support services offered by the organization. A good quality life and wellness are the cornerstone objectives of all AQ services.

Among the many AQ wellness and lifestyle programs is the “Water Wellness” program offered through AQ’s Toowoomba Multiservice Centre located on 8 Buckland Street, Toowoomba. Staff at the centre have gone beyond the funding objectives of providing respite and established a water based exercise

When a New Zealand woman devised a means of relieving her husband’s severe arthritic pain, stiff joints and swollen ankles, she did not anticipate the demand that would ensue for her Aircycle. The inflatable exerciser, allowed her husband to exercise his finger, ankle, knee and hip joints while sitting down. So effective was it, that an arthritis educator requested they be made for others.

Jenny Watson agreed to manufacture the Aircycle but the small retirement job quickly assumed larger proportions. A hospital registered it with Medsafe to use in podiatry and diabetes clinic. Physiotherapists and rest homes applauded the results.

The gentle exercise resulted in improved circulation in hands and feet – beneficial for foot problems and painful fingers. People reported

Do you snore, feel tired or sleepy during the day? You may be suffering from Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA). Common daytime symptoms of OSA include early morning headaches, daytime sleepiness, poor concentration, irritability and falling asleep during routine activities.

Common night-time symptoms include loud persistent snoring, pauses in breathing (witnessed by your partner), choking or gasping for air, restless sleep and frequent visits to the bathroom not associated with prostate problems. If left untreated, you run increased risk of suffering from stroke, high blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythm and type 2 diabetes. A simple overnight test in the comfort of your own bed can help determine whether CPAP (Constant Positive Airways Pressure) therapy would be of benefit. To discuss options for alleviating snoring, call Brendan West at CPAP Professionals for a consultation. AW1498698

swelling in ankles and night cramps had gone. Leg muscles had strengthened, they had better balance and could walk further. Joint and sciatic pain had eased.

Within a fortnight, he got to the shops and back. To his delight, within a month he could walk to the pub!” One foot shape is inflated. Terry Davis enjoyed a drink with his friends after work, but as his hearing deteriorated, his favourite pastime became too hard and he was increasingly isolated.

Now the retired Telstra technician from Sunbury in Victoria has been able to turn his world around since becoming a bilateral cochlear implant recipient, allowing him to be an active participant in his personal and social life, rather than a mere bystander. “I was becoming a recluse and having two cochlear implants helped me be part of social groups again, to hear music, the rain falling, and even my dog’s nails clicking on the floor boards at home,” says Terry.Terry had noise induced hearing loss from years of working on telephone exchanges – and his is not an isolated case.

“Noise is a leading cause of hearing loss; however it can be avoided,” says a leading Australian hearing and speech expert, Professor Richard Dowell. “But unless Australians become more aware of what constitutes a dangerous noise level, and how they can protect themselves, exposure to everyday noises, not age, will be the leading cause of hearing loss in the near future.”

According to the 2014 Cochlear Newspoll survey, while one in two adults aged 18-64 say they think about the impact an activity can have on their hear-ing, less than a quarter believe their hearing is being adversely affected by the activities they do.

“No matter how seldom you participate in a [noisy] activity, there is still the very real possibility that it is causing you permanent damage, so you should always take steps to protect your hearing,” says Professor Dowell.

Here are some tips to help protect your hearing: • Avoid exposure to loud noises• Wear hearing protection when mowing the lawn or using other noisy equipment • Use noise-cancelling earplugs when travelling on trains or planes• Cover your ears when emergency vehicles pass in the street• Get a hearing test!

Whether you are looking to prepay your own funeral or need funeral services now, Simplicity Funerals are the champions of the affordable funeral.

Prepaying your funeral with Simplicity Funerals is not only one way to protect your family from having to find funds at a difficult time, in many cases it will also be the best way to achieve this.

When you prepay a funeral you are locking in today’s price, which means you are protected from inflation. Along with this protection, you will also have the added benefit of knowing the price up front and, when paid in full, there is no more to pay. Compare this with, say, a funeral insurance policy where you may face ongoing premiums that will add up over time: this means you can end up paying more for the funeral insurance policy than the value of the actual funeral.

But this is not the only way that Simplicity Funerals can save you money on funeral costs. If your family needs to arrange a funeral now, then we are pleased to offer you our Simplicity Guarantee where we make two simple prom-ises to you: you will pay no more than you have to, to get the level of service you expect.

Walked along Flinders Beach on north-west side of Straddie a couple of days ago. Koalas seem fairly tame over here. Passed two sitting in she-oaks each about 2 metres off the ground. Not spooked at all by attention.

About half way along the beach we saw this young fellow actually running up and down the beach, and playing around the kids like a puppy. Then, he decides to go into the water for a tub! The little chap went about 20m into the sea, swam around for a good half hour

We have never heard of or seen this behaviour before: a koala who likes to “play” with humans, and swim in the ocean.

Unbelievable stuff, especially for Brian’s in-laws - something we’ll always remember.

also learn how to confidently use email and technology such as Skype to communicate with relatives and friends anywhere in the World.

BSOL will provide professional speakers to bowls clubs and groups within our coverage area and will speak about technology and how it can assist you and how joining BSOL can benefit you in your day to day lives as well as roles in community organisations.

Spring is a dangerous time for koalas.

The warmer weather brings with it the urge to move around. In our region that often means a koala spending more time than it should on the ground where it is at risk from cars, dogs and other predators.

The lead up to mating is a time for jostling and fighting for dominance among male koalas which can trigger dispersal of young sub-adult animals. Depending on habitat quality a young male may need to travel kilometres from its birthplace. Koalas can move well over a kilometre during the course of a night. At this time of the year they commonly move during daylight hours as well.

Road strike is one of the major causes of death or serious injury of koalas. The seasonal spike in injuries and mortalities at this time of the year is particularly worrying because mothers are slowed down by back-young; thus a road-hit can involve two animals.

The premature death of a breeding female in our dwindling koala populations is a calamity; the loss of a back-young as well, with its breeding life ahead of it could spell disaster. A 2% drop in koala numbers can be sufficient to tip the balance towards local extinction.

Koalas are largely nocturnal so night–time, between dusk and dawn, is especially dangerous for them. We ask motorists to drive slowly and carefully, observing koala signage and keeping to the speed limits. Many roads transect koala habitat; roadside visibility can be poor, animals appear to come out of nowhere and are often difficult to avoid; indeed it is not uncommon for a koala to be hit by more than one vehicle. Nor is it uncommon for an incident to be reported by

a motorist coming up behind. Should the worst happen and you hit a koala or you observe an animal that has been hit, please stop and check its state. We encourage motorists to carry a blanket or box in their car, for such an eventuality in order to contain the animal and remove it from the road. Stopping on any road needs careful consideration as does handling a wild koala (a swipe of those sharp claws can be damaging).

Be prepared. Have the rescue number of your local koala rescue group listed in your mobile phone and report any koala in trouble immediately.

In Tweed, Friends of the Koala operates a 24/7 Rescue Hotline: (02) 6622 1233. For information about koalas, their food trees, and other ways in which you can assist the koala conservation effort on the Northern Rivers, visit: www.friendsofthekoala.org or email [email protected] You can also follow us on Facebook.

While that’s great news, it also means you need to plan ahead to make sure you have enough money for a comfortable retirement.

If you don’t have a retirement plan, it’s never too late to put one in place. Here are three tips to help you get started.

1. Calculate how much you needAs a guide, the annual cost of retirement is estimated as:• Comfortable retirement: $57,817 for a couple or $42,254 for a single person.• Modest retirement: $33,509 for a couple or $23,283 for a single person.

When deciding how much money you’ll need, keep in mind that a modest retirement includes less spending money for leisure and recreation. You should also consider unexpected costs, including:

Retirement is in sight - better start planning!

2. Boost your super by salary sacrificeWhile you’re still working, now’s the time to really make a difference to your super. For example, by salary sacrificing, you can take advantage of a concessional tax rate of 15%. If you’re normally on a higher tax rate, this means your money will go further.

3. Boost your super with a transition to retirement strategyIf you’ve reached your preservation age, you might also want to consider a transition to retirement strategy, that lets you draw an income from your super while continuing to work and add to your super balance, maximising the potential tax benefits and boosting your savings.
