' .. - ., ., I am very pleased of your decision to be a member or'the NJROTC. You have chosen to accept responsibilities and adhere to unit rules and regulations. As a Cadet you will be the recipient of the many benefits the program offers. NJROTC teaches leadership and personal development. It not only helps you to learn to set :goals but how to acbieve them. The program stresses cievelopment of academic achievement, physical fitness, good habits, teamwork, self-discipline, personal responsibility, self-reliance, and involvement in community service programs. The Unit will provide you as. many opportunities to travel on field trips as possible without interfering with other academic courses. All Cadets are encouraged to participate in one or more of our Unit activities - Drill Team, Color Guard, Academic, Orienteering or Athletics. These teams compete throughout the year against other IROTC 'units locally and nationally. . We intend to help you become a better student, as. well as a mu~h better leader. The NJROTC curriculum is well rounded. To fully participate, the NJROTC Program requires that the instructional staff maintain. current forms on. each one of our cadets. Grading policy acknowledgement (enclosure (1) to the grading policy notice) Your NJROTC grade will be based not only on academic achievement but will include behavior, military appearance and bearing, participation, drill, and aptitude. There will be frequent opportunities for you to find out how well you are doing. You should expect periodic quizzes and exams and you will be required to. track all of all your academic assignments and uniform inspection grades in your dedicated NIROTC Cadet Notebook. The Navy requires each Cadet to wear the NIROTC uniform once a week, for the. entire school day, as an essential . part of the program. Consequently, there are more stringent rules for Cadets regarding hair length and size, jewelry, and personal grooming. At first we'll help you wear your uniform with pride, but then you'll start to feel the pride inside yourself that makes you to want to stand tall and look sharp. Weekly personal inspection will be conducted to ensure the uniform is being worn properly and that the required grooming standards are being met Your inspection grades will be a significant part of your Naval Science grade. Cadets must make-up missed uniform inspection grades for EXCUSED absences during their next regularly scheduled NJROTC Class. Failure to wear the uniform 3 times or more during a grading period will result in a failing grade for the grading period. Continuous failure to comply with grooming standards may result in course failure. You and your parents should know that all uniforms are issued at no cost to you. The uniform ite~ issued are either new or are have been professionally laundered. Essential alterations, if pre-approved by the Senior Naval Science Instructor or one of the other instructors, will be reimbursable. responsible for the maintenance of-hi-s/her uniform, to include laundry, dry cleaning and minor repairs, as needed,All uniform items remain the property of the U.S. Government and are entrusted to the custody and care of theindividual Cadet and his/her parents' or guardians. We will exchange items which wear out or which you outgrow atno cost. Uniform items lost, destroyed through carelessness or misuse, must be replaced at your expense. Uniformitems turned in soiled will be laundered or dry-cleaned at your expense. NJROTC Uniforms may be worn onlywhen prescribed, Unauthorized wearing of the uniform, or wearing individual articles of the uniform, will be causefor disciplinary action. The wearing of civilian outer-garments including overcoats is not authorized with theuniform.

Haircut and grooming requirements are more stringent for NJROTC Cadets. Complete details are contained in theNJROTC Cadet Field Manual. The key points of these standards are attached to this letter as enclosure (2). YourField Manual provides pictures and detailed instructions on wearing the uniform correctly, haircuts, and groomingstandards that all cadets are required to meet. - WHETHER mUNIFORM OR NbT ...

In addition to normal NJROTC classes all Cadets are required to attend the Unit's Annual Inspection and the annualChange of Command ceremony. Each event usually lasts less than three hours. Failure to attend these two eventswill result in a lowered grade.

. The following are not permitted in the NJROTC classrooms at any time or outside. during drill periods:

a. Chewing gum . . .. . ..b. Sleeping or resting on desk or tablec. Personal radios, CD players, or tape playersd. Ungentlemanly or unladylike conduct of any kind. including profane language, throwing objects, etc.e. Skylarking (Navy term for horseplay)f. Sitting on desks or tablesg. Placing feet on seat or on desksh. Visibly displayed cellular telephones or pagers

Learn the rules, and conduct yourself accordingly; these are the keys to success - both in school and as· a youngadult. We want all Cadets to succeed! You have chosen to become "someone special." It will be great to have youon the Bowie High School NJROTC Team.

PERSONAL APPEARANCE AND GROOMING(Excerpts from the Cadet Field Manual)

• Hair: Neat, clean, trimmed and present it well-groomed appearance. Above the ears and around the neck: mustbe tapered upwards 3/4-inch andoutwards not greater than 3/4-inch. Must not touch the collar. No longer than 4inches and the bulk shall not exceed 2 inches. (In I!-O case shall the bulk or length of your hair interfere with theproper wearing of your cap. Bulle is defined as the distance that the mass of the hair protrudes from the scalp asindicated by the - - - - - -line in the drawing on the next page). One narrow part in the hair is authorized. Thisma.y be cut, clipped, or shaved. Plaited or braided hair is unauthorized. Hair may not show. under the front brimof any uniform . Note: Ethnic hairstyles are permitted provided they aregroomed to within the guidelines stated above. Bizarrehairstyles and faddish or outrageous rmilticolor hair are unauthorized.

Shall not be below the horizontal line extending across the corners of the mouth as indicated by line"B". Shall not be more than 1/4-inch beyond a vertical line drawn upward from the comers of the mouth asindicated by line "C". No other facial hair is permitted.Fingernails: Will not extend past the fingertips.

• Hair Ornaments: Barrettes, must be similar to hair color. Conspicuous rubber bands, combs and pinsare not authorized. ' '

• Cosmetics: Applied in good taste and colors blend with natural skin tone. Exaggerated or faddishcosmetics are inappropriate. Lipstick should be conservative. '

• Fingernails: Shall not be excessive in length, Nail polish color shall complement the skin tone.• Earrings/Studs: One per ear, centered on the earlobe. Must be a small gold or. silver ball (post or screw

on). Studs are not authorized in the nose, eyebrows, tongue, lips, or other areas of the face or bodyvisible to the naval science instructor ..

• Necklaces: Authorized, but shall not be visible• 'Rings: One per hand is authorized, plus the engagement ring or the wedding ring.• Wristwatch/Bracelet; One of each is authorized, but no 'aiude bracelets.• Sunglasses: A conservative pair is permitted when authorized by the naval science instructor.

NOTE: Personal appearance such as the wearing of lip rings, tongue and nose studs, belly rings andother types of bizarre body jewelry, for both males and females at any NJROTC activity, even whenout of uniform.
