BOWIE 19: this ain’t rock’n’roll - this is cabaret

Thursday, 10 Jan 2019. The Grand Social Club. Admission €12As part of the 2019 Dublin Bowie Festival, on the day marking the third anniversary of Bowie’s death,

the discerning festival-goer will want to be at the Cáca Milis Cabaret’s “Bowie 19” - a lively, arts-focused night of Bowie. With flavours of vaudeville and old music hall spiced with rock and lounge classics,

it will reflect not only the music, but related aspects of Bowie’s work and interests, such as dance, mime, Brechtian performance, film, burlesque and more.

Cabaret hostess Helena Mulkerns, with pianoman Josh Johnston on the ivories, presents a stellar line-up of artists such as singer Caitriona O’Leary; author Mia Gallagher; Ireland’s Empress of Burlesque, Bella A GoGo; musician Bren McCarthy; eclectic Bowie project Secret Life; spoken word innovator Cursed Murphy

aka author Peter Murphy; composer Simon Quigley; film from Dan Finn; aerialist and burlesquer Lykan Animal – not to mention some Bowie Festival faves, Dave McGinley & friends.

At the core of DBF since its inception, The Grand Social became the location of a spontaneous gathering that drew Bowie fans back into its heart on 10th January 2016, the day of Bowie’s death announcement.

It’s an appropriate a place for an evening to celebrate and remember the Starman. The venue is transformed for the night with café seating and candlelight, full bar and magical theatre atmosphere.

Helena Mulkerns and Josh Johnston delivered their first performance at the festival as part of Bowie Raw last year, but this time they will present a Bowie-focused cabaret in the same style as the Cáca Milis Cabaret. Over the last nine years, this evening of the arts has been a staple at the Wexford Arts Centre,

and in Dublin at Bewleys Café Theatre and Arthurs (see more on links) as well as Electric Picnic and festivals around Ireland. From authors like Colm Tóibín or Louise O’Neill to musicians Jack Lukeman, comedian Kevin McAleer or mime artist Carlo Jaccucci, many have performed on its playbill – which,

with its “post-modern vaudeville” brief, presents a little of the arts at each event, with an emphasison originality and craft. This time – it’s for Bowie. Ladies and gents: Bowie 19

Secret Life ...The Secret Life of Arabia.... “I walk through a desert song when the heroine dies” Bowie is at the heart and soul of true romance. From cutting, savage outrage to the introspection of an artist living and breathing through a world where he leaves no stone unturned, Bowie is a voice for the silenced, the marginalised, the afraid … Gifting us anthems that tear down walls – examining issues that hide behind walls … A man of lyrical and musical genius

CACA MILIS CABARET and CABARET 19

THE DUBLIN BOWIE FESTIVAL

The Cáca Milis Cabaret has been running since 2009 mainly in the Wexford Arts Centre, and presents a taste of each of the Arts during its two-hour programme, somewhat in the joyous spirit of old time Music Hall, but presenting all-original work with an emphasis on technical quality, diversity and artistic excellence.

At The Cáca Milis, over six or eight timed slots, expect to see new music, poetry, jazz, new fiction, short Irish film and drama pieces, dance, burlesque, circus arts, comedy and of course classic cabaret as performed by Hostess and founder Helena Mulkerns with Dublin composer and musician Josh Johnston on piano. Possibly not all on the same night, but you get the idea.

The Cabaret has presented over 600 performers on its boards – both at its original base in Wexford, and other venues in Dublin, Limerick, Wicklow, Wales and at Electric Picnic. It has featured in The Irish Times, Hot Press, national radio (Today FM and Arena), television (Imeall, TG4) and more. In 2019, it will be setting up in Dublin once again - this time as Cabaret 19. Watch out for news on its first official show. Meantime, it is honoured to participate in the Dublin Bowie Festival and presents a rich evening of tribute and celebration of David Bowie for 2019. www.cacamilis.org or www.cabaret19.com
