TERMS OF ADMISSION.
Candidates for admission into the Freshman Class are required to write Latin
grammatically, and to be well versed in Geography, in Walsh's Arithmetic, Cice-
ro's Select Orations, the Bucolics, Georgics, and Aeneid of Virgil, Sallust, the
Greek Testament, and Collectanea Graeca Minora An examination in Xenophon's
Cyropaedia is received as a substitute for that, required in the Acts and Episttes
of the New Testament. They must produce certificates of their good moral char-
acter. The usual time for examination is the day after Commencement.—Can-
didates for admission into the other classes will be examined also in the books,
which have been studied by the class, into which admission is requested.—Schol-
ars from other Colleges, before they can be examined, must produce a certificate
of their regular dismission. The Geography to be studied may be Morse'?,
Worcester's, or Cummings'.
COURSE OF STUDY.
FRESHMAN CLASS.
First Term. Graeca Majora (extracts from Xenophon's Anabasis and Herodo-
tus) ; Livy (2 books) ; Lacroix's Arithmetic and Euler's Algebra.
Second Term. Graeca Majora (extracts from Thucydides, Lysias, Isocrates,
Polyaenus, and Theophrastes) ; Livy finished (6 books) ; Lacroix's Algebra.
Third Term. Graeca Majora (Demosthenes and Xenophon's Memorabilia);
Excerpta Latina (extracts from Paterculus and Pliny's Letters) ; Murray's Eng-
lish Grammar ; Lacroix's Algebra finished.
Six weeks preceding the annual examination are spent in review of the studies
of the year.
During the ichole year. Weekly translations into Latin and Greek;private
Declamations ; Recitations from the Bible every Sunday evening.

SOPHOMORE CLASS.
First Term. Greeca Majora (extracts from Plato and Homer) ; Excerpta
Latina (Tacitus) ; Blair's Rhetoric ; Cambridge Mathematics (Plane Trigono-
metry) ; Legendre's Geometry.
Second Term. Graeca Majora ; Excerpta Latina ; Cam. Mathematics (Height*
and Distances, Navigation, and Surveying) ; Geometry finished ; Hedge's Logic.
Third Term. Surveying finished ; Review of Studies ; English Composition.
During the whole year. Weekly translations in Latin and Greek alternately;
daily translations from Greek and Latin into English every third week;private
and public Declamations ; Recitations from the Bible every Sunday evening.
JUNIOR CLASS.
First Term. Graeca Majora; Horace ; Conic Sections in Webber ; Enfield's Na-
tural Philosophy ; Locke's Essay ; Paley's Evidences once a week.
Second Term. Graeca Majora; Horace; Enfield's Natural Philosophy; Pa-
ley's Evidences ; Locke's Essay concluded ; Lectures on Chemistry.
Third Term. Priestley's Lectures on History ; Henry's Chemistry ; Paley
finished ; Review of Studies ; Forensic Disputation ; Lectures on Experimental
Philosophy.
During the whole year. Translations into Latin and Greek alternately every
fortnight;private and public Declamations ; English Composition every fort-
night ; Recitations from the Bible every Sunday evening.
SENIOR CLASS.
First Term. Henry's Chemistry ; Cleaveland's Mineralogy ; Paley's Natural
Theology; Stewart's Philosophy of the Mind, (vol. i.)
Second Term. Astronomy in Enfield ; Dialling ; Spherical Geometry and Tri-
gonometry in Webber ; Stewart's Philosophy of the Mind, (vol. ii ) ; Burlemaqui
on Natural Law ; Butler's Analogy ; Lectures on Chemistry.
Tliird Term. Review of Studies ; Lectures on Experimental Philosophy, and
on Mineralogy.
During the whole year. Themes and Forensic Disputes alternately every fort-
night; public Declamations ; Recitations from the Bible every Sunday evening.
The principal annual expenses are for tuition, $24,00 ; and for room rent
$10,00. The usual price for boarding is $1,75 a week.

JfWeirical School of JWaine
The Medical School was established b.y an Act of the Legislature, patted
June 27th, 1820. It is under the direction of the Boards oT Trustees and Overseers
of Bowdoin College, and receives from the State $ 1,000 a year for the purpose
of making additions to the Library, CRi.imjt par&tus.—

Lectures commence, annually, about the middle of February ; and continue
three months. The fees of admission are fifteen dollars for the ticket of each
Professor.
Candidates for the degree of Doctor of Medicine are examined by the Faculty.of
Medicine at the termination of each course of Lectures. They must have de-
voted three years to professional studies under the direction of a regular practi-
tioner of medicine, and must have attended two full courses of Lectures, the
last of which must have been at this institution. They must pass a satisfactory
examination in Anatomy, Physiology, Chemistry, Materia Medica, Pharmacy,
Midwifery, Surgery, and the Theory and Practice of Physic; and must public-
ly read and defend a Dissertation on some Medical Subject. Those candidates,
who have not received a collegial education, must satisfy the Faculty of their
proficiency in the Latin Language and in Natural Philosophy.
Students are allowed free access to the Library, which contains about 1,100 vol.
principally modern works, which have been selected with much care. The
Library also contains an extensive and valuable collection of Plates, among
which aie the splendid works of Albinus,-Vicq D' Azvr,-Cloquet,-Home,-
Scarpa,-Cooper,-the Bells,-Baillie,-Bateman, <§*c. Many recent and approved
works on Natural History have been added since the last course of Lectures.
The Anatomical Cabinet, which was received from Europe, and formed in
part the private cabinet of the late Prof. Thillaye, of Paris, contains all the
preparations, which will be found necessary for demonstration? and embraces
many valuable specimens in Morbid and Comparative Anatomy-
The Chemical and Philosophical apparatus is ample, and furnishes means for
full courses of Lectures on these subjects.
