BotharBothar is an Irish
programme.We give money to
this charity. It helps pay for cows
and goats to go to Africa.
It helps a lot of families.
BotharThe animals are
delivered by cargo planes or trucks.
Irish Cows give 20 litres of milk a day.
African cows only give one litre.
That is a very big margin.
BotharAn Irish goat gives
up to 5 litres of milk a day.
An African goat would only give a quarter of a litre a day.
BotharThe animals are
trained well before being flown off to Africa.
The families go into training for a few months to learn how to take care of an animal.
BotharWe also give sheep
and chickens.We give families 50
chicks at once.Sheep are given to
people in cooler mountainous countries.
BotharThe people we give
animals to have to have a secure pen or stable to keep the animal in.
It needs to have an exercise and a milking area.
BotharA goat pen needs to
be raised off the ground and it needs to have little cracks for the waste to fall through.
This can be used as fertilizer for the crops.
BotharCows are to be fed a
crop called elephant grass.
It is like regular grass except it grows up instead of out.
It has all the nutrients a cow needs.
BotharSince all cows given
are in calf if a boy calf is born you keep it, if a girl calf is born you give it to another well trained family. If the cow keeps producing male you sell them to buy a girl calf and then you give the calf to the family.
