Winter is almost here. This fall weve

been busy and weve achieved a number

    of results.

If Robin Sharma is correct and Leaders

get results, then the Saint John Board of

    Trade is a leader!

Since September, the Board of Trade

    has organized numerous events including

    meetings during the provincial election

campaign to provide our members with

the opportunity to hear from each of the

parties. The Board organized meetingswith PlanSJ team on several occasions

and made a submission to the PlanSJ

    Advisory Committee to ensure business

voice is heard in the Options for Growth.

I would like to thank all of our members

    who provided their feedback.

    Additionally, the Board hosted several

    luncheons including:

Oct 20 - luncheon with leadership

expert and author Robin Sharma, who

    spoke to more than 400 attendees;

Oct 29 - the Board arranged anInfrastructure and Public-Private

    Partnerships Luncheon and Workshop to

help members learn more about the

    process involved in PPP projects;

Nov 3 - the Unlimited Possibilities

    Luncheon featuring 2006 Olympic Gold

Medalist, Jamie Korab, on Take Our Kids

to Work Day for employers and their

    students to attend;

Nov 22 - hosted a luncheon with the

    new Minister of Finance, Honourable

Blaine Higgs for his first speaking

    engagement as Minister;

Nov 24 - the Board held our premiere

    business event, our 26th Annual

    Outstanding Business Achievement

Awards Gala, which truly was the premiere

    event of the year!

This is only a taste of what our dedicated

volunteers and staff have done over the

past three months! As we wrap up 2010

and start to think about 2011, I cant help

but think of Tucker Park and the potential

for growth being created there in the

Health Sector. This past September marked

a huge milestone for our community and

province with the opening of Dalhousie

Medicine New Brunswick. We need more

doctors and health care professionals in

New Brunswick and this will help us

    attract and retain those people.

In October, we also hosted our annual

Clerks and Residents Mixer. For this mixer

we partnered with Enterprise Saint John,

    Horizon Healths Medical Education

Program, Fusion, and BMO Bank ofMontreal. The purpose of this mixer is to

introduce the medical clerks and residents

to the Saint John business community in

a location outside of Tucker Park to show

case Saint John and encourage them to

stay here when they are finished their

training. This years mixer was held at the

Peter Buckland Gallery and over 30 clerks

    and residents attended!

A lot of work has gone into developing

the health sector of the economy in our

region by many groups and individuals. With a strong, highly skilled and healthy

workforce we will continue to grow our

    community!

    Seasons Greetings!Mike

    Chairman Michael Murphy presented

    the 2010 Outstanding Business

    Achievement Chairs Award to Dalhousie

    Medicine New Brunswick, represented

by Dr. Michael Barry, Dr. Patrick Darrah

and Dr. John Steeves on Wednesday,

    November 24, 2010.

    Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick

    A significant milestone in addressing

the doctor shortage in our province was

achieved in September when Dr. John

Steeves, the inaugural Associate Dean for

    Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick,

welcomed the first 30 students to the new

Tucker Park facility. The four year

    undergraduate medical education program

    provides New Brunswick students with

the opportunity to attend medical school

in their home province and complements

    the already existing medical education

program at the Saint John Regional

    Chairs Award

    Outstanding Business Achievement Awards

Hospital which trains clerks and residents

    from various schools including Dalhousie

    and Memorial University.

The concept of a medical school in Saint

John originated in the 1930s and was

revisited in the 1970s but took form in

earnest in 2004 when Patrick Darrah was

appointed to lead a committee of

    administrators, academics, economic

    development officials and physicians. Dr.

Michael Barry, a member of the committee

and Past Chair of the Saint John Board of

Trade, worked with Mr. Darrah for nearly

four years to ensure the program came to

    fruition.

    Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswicks

location on the UNBSJ campus adjacent

to the Saint John Regional Hospital, the

tertiary care hospital for the province,

offers opportunities for future growth and

investment in research in the health

sciences sector. While the program is based

at the Saint John campus, Dalhousie

Medicine New Brunswick is provincial in

scope and will utilize state-of-the-art video

    conferencing technology to connect to

clinical sites in Moncton, Fredericton and

    Miramichi.

The Chairs Award was instituted in 1993 to

recognize a company or individual who has

demonstrated a particular excellence or achievement

in a certain aspect of their business, having made either

an immediate impact on or a substantial long-term

contribution to the economic progress of our community.

Past recipients of the Chairs Award include Philip

Oland, Saint John Pro Sports Inc, Malcolm Somerville,

Imperial Theatre Inc, Patrick Darrah, Cruise Saint

Johns Meet & Greet Committee and the IrvingCompanies, New Brunswick Community College-Saint

In todays society, there is no health

without mental health. The foundation of

a healthy society begins with mentally

    healthy individuals who find contentment

with others and are fully engaged in their

    community. Canadian Mental Health

    Association Saint John Branch embraces

this healthy community and strives to

promote the mental health of all people,

and supports the resilience and recovery

    of people experiencing mental illness.

Statistics show, the time lost due to

mental health conditions amounts to 35

million workdays, which equates to 49%

of work time lost due to illness among

    full-time working Canadians. Health

    Canada estimates the economic burden

on employers is now close to $30 billion

a year for mental health and addiction

    problems.

Mental illness knows no barriers. It

affects everyone around us - all age groups,

    cultures, education and income levels.

One in four Canadians will personally

experience a mental illness during their

lifetime. Today, only 1/3 of the people

with mental illness ever get assistance.

This may be due to stigma or lack of

    information and resources. Many people

    are suffering silently within our

communities and greatly rely on the

support, resources and hope that Canadian

    Mental Health Association offers.

    Canadian Mental Health Association

Saint John Branch offers a variety of

    education programs for youth, families,

    individuals, seniors and persons with

    disabilities. These programs assist

    individuals in achieving confidence and

skills that lead to satisfying and productive

    lives within their community.

We have all heard about the impact of

    absenteeism on productivity and the

workplace. But are you familiar with

    presenteeism?

Presenteeism is the loss of productivity

when workers are physically at work, but

are not performing at their best due to

illness, stress, or any other type ofdistraction. Studies suggest that

    presenteeism cuts an employees

productivity by a third or more.

    Unlike absenteeism, presenteeism can

be difficult to spot. Often, itcreeps in over

time, with a number of subtle behavioural

    changes. Presenteeism can include

    spending additional time on tasks,

decreased quality of work, lack of

initiative, and decreased motivation. It can

be caused by a range of sources from

health-related issues like allergies, depression, and the flu, or by non-health-

related issues like financial troubles, family

    issues and workplace concerns. According

to Statistics Canada, the average number

of days absent per employee per year is

7.5 days or 3% of salary. Studies of some

chronic conditions and health risk factors

    found that lost productivity from

presenteeism was 7.5 times greater than

    productivity loss from absenteeism.

Given its impact on productivity, its

important to address the issue of

    presenteeism before it leads to

    absenteeism. Absenteeism can result in

    burdening co-workers with extra duties

to the immense costs associated with full

loss of productivity or the necessity to

replace the employee. An employee assistance program (EAP)

is an excellent way to help employers deal

    with presenteeism. An EAP helps

employees deal with personal issues before

they take their toll at home or in the

    workplace by offering short-term

    counseling services. The Chambers Plans

EAP, Posaction, is available to both

    Benefit Facts: Presenteeism at Work

employees and their families, and provides

    quick and confidential access to

    appropriate professional resources, helping

    to resolve problems affecting health,

    performance and attendance. This can

    include assistance with financial planning,

    marital or parenting issues, addictions,

stress, eldercare, or any number of issues. To learn more about how EAPs can

create a healthy workplace, and boost your

    companys performance and bottom line,

    PlanSJ

PlanSJ is the name of the City of Saint

Johns team that is working on creating a

new municipal plan for the City. The

purpose of the municipal plan is to provide

direction for growth and development in

our City - it provides an idea of the type

of development and growth we would like

    to see.

The Saint John Board of Trade is

    committed to ensuring its members

    voices, concerns and feedback are

    incorporated into this community

document. The Board of Trade has met

with the PlanSJ team a number of times

to discuss the role of business as a

stakeholder in the development of a new

municipal plan. To ensure members can

easily access the PlanSJ information, the

Saint John Board of Trade has established

a page on its website focused on keeping

members up to date on the issue. The

page is located under the Advocacy tab

on the Boards website and provides

    information

    on upcoming

    PlanSJ events,

    links to the

    PlanSJ

website and some of the background

    material for PlanSJ.

The Board of Trade has established a

Task Force to review the Options for

Growth that were presented at the PlanSJ

Open House on October 14, 2010.

Members of this Task Force represent a

number of Board of Trade committees

    including Business & Community

    Development, Government Affairs, Retail

and Transportation. The Task Force made

recommendations to the Board of Directors

    based upon feedback received from

members of the Board of Trade. As a

result, the Saint John Board of Trade

submitted a letter to the PlanSJ Advisory

    Committee outlining the Boards feedback.

A copy of this letter is available on the

    Board of Trade website.

    Atlantic Provinces Chamber

The announcement by Emera Inc. of

the $6.2-billion deal reached to develop

power from the proposed Lower Churchill

    hydroelectric project in Labrador and

    eventually build transmission links through

to Nova Scotia is welcome news to the

    Atlantic Provinces Chambers of

    Commerce (APCC), which has been

    promoting regional economic cooperation

    for nearly two decades.

APCC is wrapping up the current phase

of the Atlantica Project, a multi-year

    project entirely focused on regional

economic cooperation, with a series of

    discussions with business and community
