CATS Academy Boston enjoyed an outstanding start to our 2017-2018 school year.

We welcomed nearly 400 students to the campus with a variety of activities throughout our orientation week, including trips to downtown Boston, a professional hip hop dance performance, and an all school barbecue meal. A happy and welcoming environment led us all to start our class schedules with enthusiasm.

We are now looking forward to a busy and productive fall semester. We are initiating our own chapter of the National Honor Society to supplement our CATS Scholars Program. We are continuing development of community service opportunities for our students both globally and in our local area, and we are already providing exciting weekend trips that provide students with the opportunity to enjoy traditional activities like carving pumpkins for Halloween as well as cultural activities like visits to Boston’s best museums. CATS Academy Boston is off to its best start ever this year and we look forward to guiding our students toward personal and academic success!

We renamed the dorms!

Emerson HouseKennedy HouseWheatley HouseGardner House

One of the suggestions made by our students last year was to come up with a better name for the places they called “home” for almost 10 months of the year. Saying “I live in Dorm A” did not sound very exciting and did not swell the chest with pride!

After much debate, decisions were made and a new tradition of our school culture was established using famous figures from New England’s rich history.

The Academic Building is now known as Adams Hall, named after the Adams Family of Massachusetts, which included two American Presidents; John Adams, 2nd President and John Quincy Adams, 6th President and noted historian and writer Henry Adams.

The Dorms and now known as Houses, there are:

• Emerson House, named after Ralph Waldo Emerson, poet and writer.

• Kennedy House, named after John Fitzgerald Kennedy, 35th President of the United States.

• Wheatley House, named after Phyllis Wheatley the first African-American poetess to be published in the United States.

• Gardner House, honors Isabella Stewart Gardner, philanthropist and art collector.

The Residential Life Team is pleased to

announce the representatives of the

2017-2018 House Council.

L3 Innovation Challenge2017

In the Youth Cities challange students work together and problem-solve in order to help design and promote a new product in the field of medical technology. Professionals from Boston Children’s Hospital, LabCentral, and other research organizations, serve as the program’s mentors and presenters.

In the first week of the program, the five selected CATS students participated in a lab led by Elizabeth Kong, a geneticist from the Boston Museum of Science. Other presenters were Vicky Wu Davis, founder and director of Youth CITIES, Johannes Fruehauf, founder and executive director of LabCentral.

Kate Donovan, one of the leaders of L3 Innovation Challenge, spoke to the students about her research at Boston Children’s Hospital. Donovan is a Harvard graduate (Summa Cum Laude in Chemistry and Biology) with a PhD from MIT.

WPI Massachusetts Math Competition 2017

Recently our students took part in the 30th Annual prestigious math competition and competed with 85 of the largest and most prestigious school districts in the States of Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts.

The competition consisted of interesting and challenging questions based on the secondary mathematics curriculum. Our warmest congratulations to Duc Anh Nguyen (Andy) who, as the top scorer in the CATS team, received a $1000 scholarship to WPI.

The Participants from CATS Academy were:• Dr. Gholamreza Namin, Advisor• Uljad Berdica • Duc Anh Nguyen (Andy) • Yat Wong (Augustine)• Lei Zhang (Acy)

From Left to Right Duc Anh Nguyen (Andy), Dr. Gholamreza Namin, Yat Wong (Augustine), Uljad Berdica, and Lei Zhang (Acy)

While all school districts were taking a break, Yat Wong (Augustine) wanted to visit WPI’s famous music hall. He was given permission to test

their piano. As a classical pianist, Augustine gave the school districts a brief piano concert. It was amazing to see all the students and teachers coming to the music hall and the expressions on their faces listening to

the amazing piano concert given by Augustine who said afterwards “that piano was one of the best I have ever played.”
