Communityfocus

Celebrating the Jubilee

ocal residents called for action through their Local Community Action Plan (LCAP)

because the area lacked a space for children and places for people to sit. The result was a great community effort with 1,000 hours of voluntary work from local people and the three Tadworth and Walton ward councillors. Support from the Council, local business and other partners gave the project a real community focus. Children from schools, playgroups and the cubs all chipped in with ideas as well as hard work. The Children’s Trust also helped with the design to ensure the paths are wheelchair friendly.

Volunteers have worked with us to turn overgrown land in Tadworth into a woodland for all to enjoy

Jubilee oakThe area has been named Jubilee Wood in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The Mayor planted a Jubilee Oak tree in commemoration.

Bat and owl boxes were erected to attract Tadworth’s winged wildlife.

Trish Canham (fundraised and volunteered)

‘I was really surprised how much fun it all was. There was a real sense of community spirit and it didn’t really matter if the weather was wet or dry. Once the jungle was cleared we were absolutely delighted with the result. The site had been overgrown for 30 years.’

Building on successJubilee Wood (off Tadworth Street) now has a management committee of residents who work closely with our Community Liaison team and Countryside Rangers. If you want to get involved contact the Tadworth and Walton Residents’ Association by visting www.tadworthwaltonra.co.uk Well done to everyone involved!

New recycling and refuse service

Cleanandgreen

F

Your new containers will come with a user guide showing what materials go in each container.

Some 80% of refuse bin contents can be recycled. By making recycling more convenient, the new service aims to get the borough’s recycling rate up to 57% within five years.

rom summer 2012, a new improved recycling service launches across

Reigate & Banstead in a phased roll out. Between July and September, each home with an individual wheeled refuse bin will receive a new, wheeled recycling bin, a lockable outside food waste container and an indoor kitchen food caddy.

Homes with communal bin areas, those using black sacks and flats (including above offices and shops) will have the new service from summer 2013 onwards, allowing recycling facilities suitable for their property types to be arranged.

In a move designed to meet residents’ demands and to increase the borough’s recycling rate, the new service lets people recycle more materials from home, including food waste.

What can be recycled from home?Once the service launches residents can recycle all of these items:

• Raw and cooked food waste (collected every week)

• Mixed recycling• A wide range of mixed plastics,

including all household bottles, yoghurt pots, tubs and food trays

• Glass bottles and jars of any colour• Cans and tins• Foil• Tetra Paks and cartons

In addition to the above, paper and cardboard are collected weekly from your black box. In future cans and tins will go in the new wheeled mixed recycling bin.

The mixed recycling will be collected every other week, at the same time as the refuse bin. If you’re a member of the garden waste service, this will be collected the other week to your mixed recycling and refuse.

Your new improved recycling and refuse service rolls out this summer

What happens next? The Council will write to every household in the summer. Homes with individual bins will be notified when:

• their new containers will be delivered

• their new service will start

• and will be sent a collection calendar explaining what will be collected on each week.

The new containers will be delivered with a user guide explaining what can and can’t go into each container.

All other homes will be written to at the same time, about when they can expect the new service.

Do you live in a home with a communal bin, in a flat above a shop or an office, or still use black sacks for your refuse? If so, your new service starts from summer 2013.

Need to know more? We’ll write to every household this summer explaining when to expect the new service. Visit www.reigate-banstead.gov.uk or call Customer Services on 01737 276292 for more information.

Q: How much do you recycle?

A: As a family we do as much as we can, but sometimes it’s hard to find time to take materials to the Council recycling centres.

Q: Why do you recycle?

A: I hate the idea of rubbish going to landfill. It costs us all money and isn’t good environmentally.

Q: Could you recycle more?

A: Yes, everybody could. This new service will make it easier to recycle more materials including glass, Tetra Paks, foil, more types of plastics and food waste – all from home.

Q: What do you think about the weekly food waste collection service?

A: It’s an excellent move. We try to use up the food we buy but sometimes there are leftovers. Knowing that it can be recycled into fertiliser appeals to me. I don’t like waste.

Q: Finally, what are you looking forward to most?

A: Having so little rubbish left to put in my existing wheelie bin!

Why not become a London 2012 Local Leader and start planning how you'll welcome the Olympic Flame and inspirational Torchbearers. www.london2012.com/localleaders will provide you with the tools to make this a celebration to remember.

Local businessShirley Cox is the Chairman of the Reigate Business Guild and co-owner of Willows Florists in the High Street. She says she is delighted that the Olympic Torch is coming through our towns. “I think it is a privilege and a fantastic opportunity for residents and traders alike to celebrate the games,” she says. “The Guild will be supporting traders and encouraging shops to decorate the town appropriately. Personally, I am excited thinking about it and look forward to seeing the town all dressed up and people lining the streets – there already seems to be a good vibe about it.”

olympic hopefulChris Tomlinson is the British long jump record holder. He was recently guest of honour at the official opening of our new Horley Leisure Centre, where he said he hoped the great new facilities would inspire future generations to achieve Olympian standards.

Chris was at the Olympics in Athens in 2004 and also in Beijing in 2008 and is now looking forward to the London games. “I am training hard and hoping to do well in the Olympic trials in June,” he said. “I have already jumped the qualifying distance, but still need to perform well at the trials. There is an expectation that I will compete and maybe even make the finals and get a medal.”

“I am really lucky to be realising my dreams,” continued Chris, “Everyone should have dreams and aspirations and although we can’t all be world record holders, we can all try hard to do our best and see just how far we can get.”
