Born too soon

Introduction

15 million babies are born too soon every year

More than 1 in 10 babies are born preterm, affecting families all around the world.

Over 1 million children die each year due to complications of preterm birth.

Many survivors face a lifetime of disability, including learning disabilities and visual and hearing problems.

Leading cause of neonatal mortality..

Rates of preterm birth are rising

Prematurity is the leading cause of newborn deaths(babies in the first 4 weeks of life) and now the second leadingcause of death after pneumonia in childrenunder the age of 5.

Behind every statistic is a story

My baby was even extremely premature for i gave birth to him when i was 27 weeks pregnant.. He weighed just 900 grams.. His survival rate was 0% initially.. Me and my husband kept a lot of hope on Allah.. He was in incubator for 45 days at Neonatal Intensive Care Unit JIPMER.. I didnt even touch my baby for 15 days.. A lot of tears for my baby stopped or otherwise forgot to breathe often.. Medically they called it a APNEA.. Still we botn didnt loose hope on Allah..Then Slowly he started to progress.. Are trust on Allah never failed... I used to keep him in my warmth for hours.. My husband was my big support.. He beared my pain, tears, my anger and frustration which i often showed. All what i got from him was a silent smile and a warm rub on my head which always said "Dont worry.. I am with you even if the entire world ignores you.." ... A man whom I always admire for the love and respect he shows me..A big thanks to Team NICU-JIPMER Pondy.. How can I forget to specify my Sister who first of all taught me how to communicate with Allah..Gifted to have her as my sister.. My mum and dad who are still busy baby sitting.. And all others for ter prayers...

Everyone has a role to play

Everyone can help to prevent preterm births andimprove the care of premature babies, acceleratingprogress towards the goal of halving deaths due topreterm birth by 2025. The Every Woman Every Child effort, led by UNSecretary-General Ban Ki-moon, provides the frameworkto coordinate action and ensure accountability.( Invest , Implement , Innovate , Inform)

Feeding practices & Nutrition

• Early initiation of breastfeeding within one hour after birth has been shown to reduce neonatal mortality

• Premature babies benefit from breast milk nutritionally, immunologically anddevelopmentally.

• Most premature babiesrequire extra support for feeding with a cup, spoon or anotherdevice such as gastric tubes

Supplementation for preterm infants

Recommended intakes for macro-nutrientsexpressed per mg/ kg/ day and per 100 kcal unlessotherwise denoted

Supplementation for preterm infantsRecommended intakes for micronutrientsexpressed per mg/ kg/ day and per 100 kcal unlessotherwise denoted

Prevention of infection

Clean birth practices reduce maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity from infection-related causes, including tetanus .

Hand cleansing is especially critical in neonatal care units.

Unnecessary separation from the mother or sharing of incubators should be avoided as these practices increase spread of infections.
