Padre’s Corner APRIL 19, 2020 SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER (SUNDAY OF DIVINE MERCY)
“A Minnesota church is saying “out with the old!” Gray haired members of Grove United Methodist Church in Cottage Grove have been invited to worship elsewhere as part of an effort to draw younger parishioners.
A memo sent out to those older than 59 asked them to stay away for two years, then consult the pastor about reapplying.”
New York Post – January 20, 2022
“Pro-Lifer: The Horrors of Belgian Euthanasia
At First Things, Wesley Smith writes: “Wonder of wonders”: Belgium is prosecuting three doctors for illegal euthanasia.” Even under the country’s ultra-liberal euthanasia law, the patient must be suffering from “serious and incurable” disorder. But Tine Nys, 39, suffered from depression over a broken romance, family members allege, and the docs who euthanized her “violated the guidelines that doctors are supposed to follow.” Far from showcasing accountability, however, the case underscores how thus slippery-slope is all too real. Since legalization in 2002, “doctors have terminated not only physically sick patients, but also people with disabilities, the despairing elderly and the mentally ill. Even children as young as 9 have been euthanized.” The deeper lesson: “A culture’s collective mindset about the meaning and importance of human life becomes distorted when euthanasia is legal.””
New York Post – January 20, 2022
“A Magic carpet takes you away from work-a-day cares to havens of relaxing quietude where you can relive the pleasures and adventures of a past day – brought to life in vivid picture and prose.”
Jefferson R. Burdick, owner of one of the greatest baseball card collections of all time.
PONDERINGS FROM FATHER BILL What a stressful world this can be. There is a pitch of craziness even in religious circles, as the Minnesota story of a loony pastor reflects. What gives in Belgium? “Every child born is a sign that God wants the world to continue,“ stands in direct contrast to the anti-life pitch present in many nations and cultures today. The human womb is not a safe place to born into, with statistically a 50/50 chance to survive. The womb is either an execution chamber or a garden of lovely flowers. I closed the above anecdotal news events with a quotation about baseball card collections, rooted in a lecture at Mount Saint Mary’s College in Newburgh on February 12. The archivist at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown gave a talk about this hobby, which starting in the late 1800’s gave the public an outlet from the economic and social pressures of their time. Our culture today is no less crazy than it was 160 years ago, still marred by the threats of war and political tensions (think the Civil War plus the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln). We need outlets like hobbies, wholesome entertainment, cultural development in museums, and meaningful music to elevate the soul in an uplifting way. Ultimately, our true respite comes in a prayerful and sacramental relationship with Jesus. Father Bill

Today SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER OR SUNDAY OF DIVINE
MERCY First Reading: Acts 2:42-47 In the early days of the Church in Jerusalem, the faithful listened intently to the teachings of the apostles. They lived a communal life, sharing all property in common and praying and taking their meals together. Second Reading: 1 Peter 1:3-9 In this first letter from Peter, he speaks to the Christians with great joy and confidence, reminding them that through Christ’s resurrection, they have been given a new birth and are heirs to the kingdom of heaven. Gospel: John 20:19-31 After his resurrection, Jesus appears to his disciples and gives them the power to forgive sins. Thomas, who is absent, sees Christ later and believes in His resurrection after feeling His wounds. Christ admonishes Thomas by saying, “You became a believer because you saw Me. Blessed are they who have not seen and believed.”
Monday Acts 4:23-31; Jn 3:1-8 Tuesday Acts 4:32-37; Jn 3:7b-15 Wednesday Acts 5:17-26; Jn 3:16-21 Thursday Acts 5:27-33; Jn 3:31-36 Friday Acts 5:34-42; Jn 6:1-15 Saturday 1 Pt 5:5b-14; Mk 16:15-20

MESSAGE FROM FATHER PETER..... Hi Fr. Bill: May you have a Peace-filled and Happy Easter. May the Risen Lord have mercy on all His children and the whole world. Hope that you are well and things are under control. Thank God, I am fine and so are the family. Still waiting for news about air flight to return to USA. Stay well and safe! God bless you. Fr. Peter

Pope Francis’s Prayer to Mary During Coronavirus Pandemic
O Mary, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm.
You, Salvation of Your People, know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to you and to feasting after this time of trial.
Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of the resurrection. Amen.
Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of we who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.
