Banking Finance: BLG’s Financial Services Group is a large multidisciplinary team with expertise in all areas of financial services law including banking, lending, leasing, structured finance, project finance, securitisations, real estate, regulatory, insurance, bankruptcy, restructuring, trust law and related disciplines. The Firm’s multidisciplinary approach reflects the reality of the integration of financial sectors requiring special expertise. Competition and Antitrust: BLG’s Competition and Marketing Law Group provides clients with the full spectrum of antitrust litigation and counselling services. The firm has special expertise in advising on how antitrust legislation applies to regulated industries such as telecommunications, pipelines and electric power and how such laws and regulations relate to the exclusive rights associated with intellectual property. The group’s unique insight in dealing with competition law matters is a result of having acted for private sector clients as well as the Attorney General of Canada and the Commissioner of Competition, the Head of the Canadian Competition Bureau.
Energy and Natural Resources: BLG’s Oil and Gas Group and Electricity Markets Group serve a wide range of clients, from multinationals to recent start-ups. Our professionals have specific expertise advising clients on the development, financing and building of oil and gas pipelines, offshore energy projects and other major natural resource projects. Intellectual Property: The members of BLG’s Intellectual Property Group specialise in providing advice on the development, protection, exploitation and use of intellectual property and information technology. Many of the professionals hold advanced scientific degrees, as well as PhDs from fields ranging from biotechnology to telecommunications. The group’s expert knowledge of Anton Piller orders and Mareva injunctions is widely recognised. As well, the group has expertise in international licensing and distribution agreements, cross-border transfers of technology, software and data, and the storage, use and transmission of information internationally.
International Trade and Arbitration: BLG’s International Trade and Arbitration Group lawyers act as advisers and counsel for Canadian- based and international clients in relation to domestic and international commercial arbitration matters, investment treaty claims and a broad range of trade-related matters. In addition to their experience as counsel in ICC, LCIA, and ICDR administered arbitrations, and ad hoc unadministered UNCITRAL proceedings, members of the group have acted as counsel in more than a dozen ICSID NAFTA Chapter 11 arbitrations and in WTO other trade-tribunal proceedings. Due to BLG’s broad practice reach, the group has represented clients in many business sectors, including the aviation, automotive, banking, energy, insurance, forestry, manufacturing, mining and technology industries.
Labour and Employment: BLG’s Labour and Employment Group serves a wide variety of businesses and industries, Crown (state-owned) corporations and government. The depth and breadth of the firm’s experience in both provincial and federal labour employment laws allows the firm to advise clients on a complete range of issues, including unionisation drives, employee communications, collective bargaining, tribunal representation, human rights issues and executive termination.
Real Estate: BLG’s Commercial Real Estate Group provides assistance in the acquisition, development, construction and financing of commercial, industrial and residential properties. Members of the group also offer extensive expertise in negotiating arrangements between private enterprise and government bodies relating to land development and advising on all aspects of zoning and planning work.
Securities and Capital Markets: The Securities and Capital Markets Group, consisting of over 100 professionals, handles all matters of corporate and securities transactions, both domestic and transborder. The Group helps clients structure, negotiate, implement and manage complex business and corporate reorganizations, restructurings, insolvencies and mergers. Members of the Group have strong track records in managing regulatory approvals, designing international tax strategies and dealing with multijurisdictional legal issues that arise in M&A transactions. Tax: BLG’s Tax Group works closely with the Firm’s M&A, investment management, banking and structured finance and wealth management and structuring practices to provide integrated, innovative and cost-effective solutions to clients for cross- border and domestic mergers and acquisitions, reorganisations, complex financings and public offerings. Members of the group have successfully represented both domestic and international clients through all levels of disputes with the tax authorities.

Our strategy focuses on providing excellent legal service. Physical offices are not necessary in a connected and globalized world. We regularly travel to meet clients to further our understanding and commitment.
Guiding our international efforts is a sophisticated marketing and business development strategy. BLG lawyers have extensive expertise in private client work for HNW/UHNW individuals and families and in many industry sectors that are important to our clients. Focusing on private clients and on key markets and key industries, we have internationally recognized lawyers with expertise in holistic global estate planning for private clients and expertise in mining, financial services, oil and gas, electricity, international trade, infrastructure and the automotive sector.
Our clients increasingly come from overseas and many of them operate in a global environment. We regularly travel overseas to meet with our international HNW/UHNW clients wherever they reside to assist them in their planning for protecting the family wealth and to prepare the human capital of these families for the transfer of the family wealth from one generation to the next. This preparation includes the set-up of asset protection structures using trusts and foundations, succession planning, estate planning, and the set-up of family governance systems with family charters and the like to ring fence these families against third parties and to avoid litigation and disputes among the family members themselves to the extent possible. DUE DILIGENCE
BLG has a comprehensive and sophisticated conflicts clearing system to identify, disclose and deal with conflicts of interest and potential conflicts of interest in compliance with the codes of conduct that govern our profession.
The Firm’s confident that any potential conflict issues will be brought to our immediate attention. BLG is particularly sensitive to all conflict inquiries and ensures that our clients are protected from instances of direct action by other members of the Firm, either by declining the retainer or (with client consent) by setting up appropriate conflict walls.
FINANCIAL VIABILITY
As a privately held partnership, the revenues of BLG are considered highly confidential by its partners and are not disclosed in any public manner. We can, however, advise that we have a significant nine-figure annual national revenue, supported by capital contributions by our equity partners. Our national revenue has grown each year since we merged as a national firm in 2000.
BUSINESS CONTINUITY PLAN
The Firm has developed a business continuity plan and pandemic plan to ensure that our clients’ business needs will be taken care of in the event of business interruptions.

The protection of our client’s information is a high priority for BLG. We have physical security, as well as hardware and software measures, in place to protect our electronic information assets and meet the demands for high levels of information availability.
Our office network is secured by Checkpoint’s firewall software and closed off from unauthorized access. Our client extranets use secure user authentication. Remote access to internal resources is via an encrypted channel using a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). We use McAfee’s VirusScan Enterprise for virus protection.
Business Continuity for BLG begins with our strategy and choice of technology for data storage. BLG stores our electronic information assets on a highly redundant Storage Area Network, utilizing fiber-channel storage arrays for optimum performance and reliability.
One of the most important aspects of Business Continuity for BLG is our strategy for back-up and recovery of our technology systems and electronic data. BLG requires that the electronic data be backed up and stored in a secure off-site location. Our back-up practices and procedures ensure the efficient and full recovery of computer systems in the event of hardware failure and protect the Firm from data loss in the event of a physical disaster.
In the event of business interruptions, BLG has the capacity for professionals and employees to continue to work remotely from home or another BLG office. Specific arrangements have been put in place with our banking institution to enable BLG to continue to meet their accounts payable and accounts receivable obligations. In addition, alternate business sites have been identified as a means to continue the management of BLG.
BLG is confident that we can continue to meet our clients’ needs during times of business interruptions and to adequately restore documentation in the event of a disaster.
DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION
Promoting diversity and inclusion is a core value at BLG. The Firm draws upon the strengths of knowledgeable and skilled individuals from different backgrounds who represent a variety of viewpoints and experiences. Besides an overall bilingual English-French capacity, BLG offers services in all major languages including Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish, German, and Italian.

Clients come from around the world and include a wide range of commercial enterprises from major multinationals to emerging leaders. As well, BLG acts for public sector clients including governments from the municipal to national level.
