Bordeaux 2014
The Greenacres team travelled to Bordeaux for the 2014 En Primeur tastings at the
beginning of April. This was the 19th consecutive year James and I have travelled for
this annual event. What is always enjoyable about the En Primeur tastings is how
different the vintages are every year. We have tasted the Greats, 2000, 2005, 2009
and 2010 and the very good vintages of 2001, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2012. In our
opinion the quality of the 2014 vintage deserves a place just behind the greats and
above the very good vintages.
There are a lot of reports online describing this vintage as a Cabernet Sauvignon
vintage, I don’t think it is that simple. There are certainly some amazing Cabernet
Sauvignon based reds from St Estephe, Pauillac and St Julien that are exceptional;
we also tasted some great wines with a high percentage of Merlot, especially in
Pomerol, St Emilion and Margaux. For the Chateaux involved in producing great
Merlot from this difficult vintage was a challenge, this was certainly a year when the
Quality of wine making was of huge importance. I believe it was one of the most
important factors of this vintage.
2
The wines that have excelled this year had lovely freshness of acidity, purity of fruit,
good concentration and soft, pure tannins.
To describe the conditions faced by the chateau I will quote Alexandre Thienpont of
Vieux Chateau Certan in Pomerol:
“A pleasant surprise
From winter to the beginning of June, the first half of 2014 began with mild
temperatures and frequent periods of rain. The flowering process that followed was
even, helped by glorious weather in mid-June. Despite a summer of scattered
stormy periods, the weather changed for the better with consistent summer
sunshine from the end of August till the harvest.
As a precaution, we carried out vine canopy work in several stages as from the
veraison. One week before the harvest, de-leafing was necessary on the west side of
the rows in order to enhance ripening.
Thanks to this glorious Indian summer, the Cabernet Franc was of excellent quality.
It brought to the blend delicacy, excellent length and breed. It gives the wine its
flamboyant side.
The Merlot is rich, perfumed, round and vinous. It brings liveliness and
pleasantness.
The 2014 Vieux Chateau Certan displays many facets: it shows a balance between
freshness and roundness and between fruit character and length of flavour.
It is charming and Delicious”.

Day 1
Our Tasting began on the Sunday we arrived. We called to our good Friend, Paulin
Calvet for Chateau Picque Caillou in Pessac Leognan. Paulin’s wine is always the first
wine we taste every year, as his Chateau is on the way into the City from the Airport.
We were delighted to the quality of both his red and white wines; they are both the
best he has produced since the 2010 vintage.
4
Day 2
We had a very busy schedule ahead of us on Monday morning.
Our first appointment was at Calon Segur @ 8:30 in the morning (7:30 at home).
Calon Segur is the furthest Grand Cru Classe in the Medoc, at the northern tip of St
Estephe. It was worth the long journey.
Calon Segur is one of my favourites from this year. I was also impressed with their
Capbern 2014, this will be great value!
Our next appointment is at Cos D’Estournel, we received a great welcome,
personalised vintage report books and a great tasting. The Grand Vin is excellent
with Pagodes de Cos scoring one my higest scores for a 2nd wine.
5
Across the “border” to neighbouring property Lafite Rothschild next.
I was very impressed with the Duhart Milon and I also rated Lafite as possibly the
best of the 1st growths this year. What really stood out for me this year was how the
Carruades de Lafite, Duhart Milon and Lafite all had very similar characteristics to
each other. There was no denying they were all made by the same hand.
Mouton Rothschild was next in line.
My perennial favourite Clerc Milon was delicious and Mouton Rothschild was vying
for top spot of the 1st growths, a fantastic wine. I love going to Mouton as I always
buy the latest label to add to my collection, this year it was the 2012 vintage label.
(the Birth date of my Son!)
We skip across the road to Chateau Pontet Canet.
Pontet Canet are now proud of the fact they are now bio dynamic and 100% Organic.
You have to drive through neighbours vineyards to get to Pontet Canet, all of which
had just received a dose of roundup, leaving burnt yellow grass and weeds, I’m
convinced the neighbour’s did this on purpose and just in time for the thousands of
visitors. Alfred and Melanie Tesseron were both on hand to present their great wine.
As in the past 6 years the quality of Pontet Canet is superb – I have the 2014 vintage
at 18+/20 – I will be buying as much as I can for this year.
On to Chateau Montrose.
Chateau Montrose was one of my favourite wines this year. It has a lovely texture and
elegance to it. The 2nd Wine Dame de Montrose and sister property Tronquoy
Lalande were both very tasty too and will represent good value.
6
Having worked up a healthy appetite at this stage, we made the short journey back to
Pontet Canet for a great lunch. The lunch here is always superbly organised, as you
arrive you are shown to your table, you immediately receive a glass of Chateau Pontet
Canet 2008 with your starter – Tourte a L’Ancienne (a lovely country styled pate).
Main course was Longe de Magret Vigneronne et ses Legumes (melt in the mouth
duck). For the 3rd course there is the biggest buffet of Cheese I have ever seen, about
20 feet in length, split in sections of Cow’s, Goat and Sheep’s cheese from every
corner of France. I practically overdosed on Epoisse and Reblochon. A welcome Café
Gourmand finished off the Lunch perfectly.
The range of Tesseron Cognacs were available for tasting afterwards, Now that
Greenacres has a full licence to sell spirits – Tesseron Cognac will be a very welcome
addition to our range. Watch this space!!!!!!!!!
Back to Pichon Longueville Comtesse at the southern end of Pauillac.
A superb effort here also with their Grand Vin. Well structured, elegant and
concentrated, always a more feminine wine to their neighbour and near namesake
Pichon Longueville Baron.
Leoville Las Cases across the stream in St Julien.
This is always a tough tasting, as we have a line-up of seven big wines with lots of
character to be tasted in 20 minutes. Our first taste of a predominantly Merlot wine,
with Chateau Nenin and its 2nd wine Fugue de Nenin. Both silky, rich and elgant.
Two Potensac’s from the Northern Medoc which a full with lots of body and
structure. The final 3 wines are from the property of Leoville Las Cases, Petit Lion,
Clos du Marquis and the Grand Vin, which is up there with the best of the superb
seconds.
7
Back across the stream to Chateau Latour in Pauillac.
Although they no longer participate of releasing their wine En Primeur, they still
show it to their customers along with their current release, this being the 2003
vintage of Latour, perfectly mature 20/20. The 2014 vintage would be my choice of
the 1st growths , however as it is not on offer for at least another 10 years I will not
count it in my final conclusions of the vintage. Amazing wines though!
And now, to the heart of St Julien and Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou.
Always a lovely tasting, starting with a very pleasant Lalande Borie, a serious La
Croix de Beaucaillou and the main wine Ducru Beaucaillou. A big wine this year, very
complex, and rich with lots of power and structure.
A little respite now at a nearby hotel for a quick beer.
Chateau Malescot St Exupery in Margaux is a little jewel, now run by Jean Luc Zuger,
Jean Luc welcomed us for dinner after visiting the cellars and tasting the 2014
vintage. During dinner we were treated to the 2009, 2005, 2000 and 1989 vintages,
for me the best on the night was the 2000 vintage, although I think the 2009 vintage
will be his finest, given time. We had a great night – got back to the hotel at 1.00am.
8
Day 3
Tuesday. An early rise at 6:15.
It is still dark when we hit the road for our first appointment of what is a very busy
schedule. 7:20am when we leave our Hotel on the Quay in Bordeaux to travel what is
a short distance as the crow flies, however traffic is always at a snails pace around the
city of Bordeaux, so we make our first appointment at 8:00 at Chateau Haut
Brion. This is a perfect time of day to start tasting wines as your palate is fresh!
Without exception, they are all wonderful wines here, from Quintus and La Mission
Haut Brion, very intense, layered with black fruit and concentrated, to a great Haut
Brion. The best was for last though - Haut Brion Blanc 2014 – I could still taste it as
we were driving out of the Chateau.
We head up north to the Medoc and the first of our UGC tastings. We drive all the
way to Chateau Lynch Mousas to cherry pick our way through the group tasting
of wines from Pauillac and St Estephe, highlights from this tasting were Lynch Bages
which was very concentrated and impressive, Pichon Baron and Grand Puy Lacoste.
The 2nd whistle stop UGC tasting of the day was at Chateau Leoville Poyferre
were we just had enough time to taste the wines which we follow. Again some great
wines to consider from here, Leoville Poyferre, Leoville Barton, Gruaud Larose,
Talbot, Lagrange and Gloria
9
Chateau Palmer is next on our itinerary.
I found both the Alter Ego and Palmer excellent, lovely freshness, Red berry fruit,
silky textured with well integrated tannins.
Chateau Margaux in the company of Paul Pontallier was our penultimate visit in
the Medoc.
Mr. Pontallier was waxing lyrical about the quality of the vintage, placing Chateau
Margaux just behind the greats of 2010, 2009, 2005 and 2000. He said the Pavillon
Blanc produced this year was the best ever made at the property. Quite a big
statement, certainly the best I have ever tasted.
Our final visit in Margaux and the Medoc was at Chateau Dauzac (the very first red
wine I ever tasted back in the early 90’s, responsible for hooking me into the wine
business. The vintage was 1989). This was the UGC tasting for the wines of Margaux.
My favourites here are Du Tertre, Brane Cantenac and Rauzan Segla and d’Angludet.
10
We leave the Medoc to drive and taste the right bank wines of St Emilion and
Pomerol.
First a spot of lunch and we arrive at Chateau Clos Fourtet for the UGC tasting of St
Emilion wines, (they also serve lovely buffet lunches at these tastings), however we
arrived late and to the aftermath of what was probably a lovely lunch, we enjoyed
what morsels we could find before launching into our afternoon of tasting. From the
UGC St Emilion tasting I enjoyed the Troplong Mondot and Canon La Gaffeliere.
To the most welcoming of all tastings, the wines of JP Moueix.
Superb wines here, a big, big tasting. We taste the whole range from Grand Village,
Plince, Latour a Pomerol, Hosanna, Lafleur Petrus, Trotanoy, Belair Monange,
Lafleur and many more – My choice of these wines is Trotanoy, Lafleur Petrus,
Lafleur and Belair Monange. This is a great example as to how careful winemaking
has produced quality wines from Merlot this year.
11
Chateau Petrus is next in line.
Here they have produced a very refined wine. Concentrated and complex with a
layered fruit palate, silky and smooth, with integrated firm tannins. One of the finest
of the vintage.
A Short Journey as the crow flies to Le Pin.
Across the plateau is the very small, aesthetically pleasing, modern “Chateau” of Le
Pin. Jacques Thienpont presents his Le Pin and also his new St Emilion property L’If
in his cellar. The colour of Le Pin always fascinates me as it is always bright and even.
The wine shows very floral and fragrant, on the palate it has lots of concentration and
is very polished. This is perfect in my opinion. His L’If has a very similar style and
character and is one to watch. What a way to finish a day’s tasting – La fleur Petrus,
Trotanoy, Lafleur, Petrus and Le Pin.
Dinner in our favourite little restaurant in Bordeaux is Bouchon Bordelais and our
great friends there looked after us with their customary charm and friendliness. Then
up for a night cap in the square.
12
Day 4
Wednesday, an extra early start, 6am. Breakfast and then out to the Airport to drop
our group of friends that had accompanied us on the 1st leg of our journey.
Back to St. Emilion for our final day of tasting.
Starting at Vieux Chateau Certan, Alexandre Thienpont, now assisted by his son
has made another top quality wine picking up from where he left off last year. This is
without doubt, one of our favourite tastings every year, elegance personified.
Across the road to Cheval Blanc.
One of the most elaborate properties in Bordeaux. There is no doubt they have made
a superb wine here. We also have an opportunity to taste Chateau d’Yquem which
scores a perfect 20 from me.
Chateau Figeac is next, in recent year it is obvious they have made great inroads in
improving their wine here. This is one of the finest examples of Figeac I have tasted,
very pure, elegant, whilst still retaining the character of its terroir.
Chateau L’Angelus is next.
When we arrive at the Chateau is seems every car within a 10 mile radius of St
Emilion has parked there. We end up parking in the vineyard across the road. Inside
the Chateau they have hundreds of wines to taste, from Bordeaux to South Africa,
Lebanon, Thailand etc. I must say I am always confused by this tasting! We bump
our way through hundreds of people to taste a number of wines from 2014 Bordeaux
that we had not yet had the opportunity to taste. Highlights were Bellevue and of
course L’Angelus.
13
The caved cellars of Chateau Ausone. Mr. Vauthier graciously received us to the
unique setting of Chateau Ausone Chateau Ausone 2014 is a great wine, with power,
elegance and a very long finish. It is certainly the best wine produced from St
Emilion this year. I was also very impressed with de Fonbel 2014, which always
represents great value for money and Haut Simard, I found it fragrant and very rich.
Our final visit is to Chateau Pavie.
This is now an immaculate property with fantastic art works and sculpture. Our
tasting was so well organised , all samples pre-poured and waiting your judgement.
My personal taste found the Espirit de Pavie, Angelique de Monbousquet and
Aromas de Pavie to be lovely, elegant and very ripe. All wine from here up the
Chateau Pavie were big, powerful, and very concentrated wines, perfect for those who
like that style!
That completes out tasting of Bordeaux 2014.
