U BOP

The Cameron U BOP is the most widely used ram-type BOP for land, platformand subsea applications worldwide and offers the widest range of sizes of anyCameron ram-type BOP.

Like all other Cameron preventers, the rams in the U BOP are pressure-energized. Wellbore pressure acts on the rams to increase the sealing force andmaintain the seal in case of hydraulic pressure loss. Seal integrity is actuallyimproved by increased well bore pressure.

Other features of the U BOP include:• Bonnet seal carrier is available to eliminate the need for high makeup

torque on bonnet studs and nuts.

• Hydraulically operated locking mechanisms, wedgelocks, lock the ram hydraulically and hold the rams mechanically closed even when actuating pressure is released. The operating system can be interlocked usingsequence caps to ensure that the wedgelock is retracted before pressure isapplied to open the BOP.

• For subsea applications, a pressure balance chamber is used with thewedgelocks to eliminate the possibility of the wedgelock becoming unlockeddue to hydrostatic pressure.

Other features include hydraulically opening bonnets, forged body and awide selection of rams to meet all applications. See pages 11 through 17for rams available to fit the U BOP.

U BOP Hydraulic Control System

The U blowout preventer is designed so that hydraulic pressure opens andcloses the rams and provides the means for quick ram change-out.

Ram closing pressure closes the rams. When the bonnet bolts are removed,closing pressure opens the bonnet. After the bonnet has moved to the fullyextended position, the ram is clear of the body. An eyebolt can be installed in thetop of each ram to lift it out of the preventer.

Ram opening pressure opens the rams. Following ram change-out, thispressure closes the bonnets. The rams are pulled outward, near the bonnetsbefore the bonnets begin moving toward the preventer body. This assures thatthe rams never obstruct the bore or interfere with the pipe in the hole. Hydraulicpressure draws the bonnets tightly against the preventer body and the bonnetbolts are reinstalled to hold the bonnets closed.

U BOP Specifications and Accessories

Your Cameron representative can provide information on non-standardBOP assemblies. The following specifications apply to typical CameronU type BOPs: • Side outlets to 4-1/16" (7-1/16" on 26-3/4" BOPs) can be provided beneath

each set of rams on either or both sides of U BOPs. Side outlets can bestudded, open-face flange or clamp hub with the same pressure rating as thevertical run connections.

• Flanges conform to API standard 6A and/or 16A. Hubs conform to API 16Aor applicable standards. Type 6BX flanges are standard for 10,000 and15,000 psi working pressures and for 5000 psi for 13-5/8" and larger boreBOPs.

• Hydraulic control connections for operation of rams and bonnets are 1" NPT.There are two connections for each set of rams. Wedgelock connections are1/2" NPT.

• The dimensions chart shown on the following page does not include spacersbetween rams for double ram models. U BOPs with spacers to clear tooljoints can be obtained on special order.

U BOP Shearing Blind Rams

Cameron shearing blind rams shear the pipe in the hole, then bend thelower section of sheared pipe to allow the rams to close and seal. Shearingblind rams can be used as blind rams during normal drilling operations.

The DS shearing blind ram can cut larger diameter tubulars or multipletubing strings regardless of their orientation to the centerline of the ram. A bladeseal between the upper and lower faces eliminates the need for moving pipeafter shearing.

Features include of shearing blind rams and DS rams include: • Large frontal area on the blade face seal reduces pressure on the rubber and

increases service life.• Cameron SBRs can cut pipe numerous times without damage to the cutting

edge.

• The single-piece body incorporates an integrated cutting edge.• CAMRAM™ top seals are standard for all U BOP shearing blind rams

through 18-3/4". • For U and UII BOPs through 18-3/4," part numbers beginning with 644XXX

indicate the CAMRAM lipped-plate design. Other part numbers may usestandard elastomer material and reinforced plates. Verify this with yourCameron representative.

• H2S SBRs are available for critical service applications and include a bladematerial of hardened high alloy suitable for H2S service.

• The Cameron shearing blind ram has a single-piece body with an integratedcutting edge.

Tandem Boosters for U BOPs

*The 7-1/16" tandem booster is a part of the standard land and platform shear configuration for 7-1/16" U BOPs.

A BOP equipped with tandem boosters candeliver increased shearing force while notincreasing the wear and tear on the packers.Tandem boosters approximately double the forceavailable to shear pipe. Since the tailrod of thetandem booster has the same stroke as the BOP'soperating piston, the standard shear lockingmechanism can be installed on the outside end ofthe booster. For information on lock screws andthe required spacers, see pages 8, 9 and 10.

U BOP Variable Bore Rams (VBR™ and VBR-II™)

U BOP DSI and DVS Shear Rams

The Cameron VBR-II is the next generation of the highly popular Cameronvariable bore ram (VBR) packer. The patent pending VBR-II accommodates arange of pipe sizes and may be used in existing Cameron variable bore rams.The VBR-II seals on a range of drill pipe sizes as well as hexagonal kellys andprovides uniform sealing pressure with virtual elimination of extrusion paths.As indicated in the chart below, the VBR-II is the standard VBR in most commonsizes. In sizes where the VBR-II is not specified in the chart, the popularCameron VBR is the standard offering. VBR-II packers for other size BOPs andother pipe size ranges are available upon request.

Dual string interlocking (DSI) shear rams and double V shear (DVS) rams arealso available for the U BOP. The interlocking feature of these rams provides thecapability of shearing wireline and braided cable with zero tension in the line,while still maintaining a seal. The blades are interlocked by using pockets in thelower ram and arms on the upper ram to prevent any gap between blade surfaces.

DSI rams are similar to standard DS shear rams except for the interlockfeature. DSI shear rams are capable of shearing tubing, small pipe, braidedcable, slickline and solid sinker bar.

DVS rams are similar in design to the standard shearing blind rams exceptthat both blades are V shaped and interlocked. The DVS rams are capable ofshearing tubing, small pipe , braided cable and slickline.

CAMRAM 350 Packers and Top Seals for U BOPsCAMRAM 350 U BOP pipe ram packers and top seals are available for

applications which require high temperature capabilities and greater H2Sresistance than standard CAMRAM packers and top seals.

CAMRAM 350 is available in all U BOP sizes in which standard CAMRAMpackers and top seals are offered. At present, only pipe sizes (up to 6-5/8") aremanufactured.

CAMRAM packers in drill pipe sizes feature the Cameron patented lippedplate design. All packers also have chamfered ends on the top and bottomreinforcing plates to prevent ram bore scoring and reduce elastomer extrusion.

All packers and top seals are molded using CAMLAST™ high performanceelastomer from Cameron Elastomer Technology.

Note: 20" and 26" packers are "severe service" and are technically not CAMRAM 350. They do not incorporate the lipped plate design.

The Cameron Inserted Packer for stripping/snubbing service is designedwith a field replaceable, wear-resistant non-rotating insert block. The insertblock is fabricated from a specially formulated ultra-high molecular weightpolyethylene (UHMW-PE) which extends service life. The insert block isdesigned to be self-locking in the packer and should not require screws or otherfasteners to hold it in place. The Cameron design eliminates the major causesof failure for inserted packers using semicircular inserts held in place withscrews, including rapid insert wear out and insert rotation resulting inpermanent packer damage.

U BOP CAMLAST Bonnet and Connecting Rod SealsBonnet Seals and Connecting Rod Seals

For applications where only bonnet and/or connecting rod seals arerequired, Cameron offers individually packaged components. Connecting rodseals are nitrile rubber. Bonnet seals beginning with 644197 are the newestdesign.

When high temperature and/or high concentrations of H2S are expected,Cameron recommends the used of CAMLAST bonnet and connecting rod sealsalong with CAMRAM 350 packers and top seals.

Bonnet Seal Carriers for U and U II BOPs

The bonnet seal carrier is a bore-type sealing assembly which replaces theface seal used as the previous bonnet seal. Sealing capability is not dependentupon bonnet bolt torque. One seal is captured in a machined bore in the BOPbody while the other seal is captured in a machined bore in the intermediateflange.

The seal carrier was designed, developed and performance-verified for use innewly manufactured BOPs or as a replacement seal assembly for BOPs whereeither the BOP body or the intermediate flange requires weld repair on the sealingsurfaces.

Bonnet Bolt and Tensioner Part Numbers

The hydraulic bonnet bolt tensioner eliminates frictional and torsional loadsand reduces the time required for making up and breaking out bonnet bolts.• The hydraulic bonnet bolt is completely interchangeable with conventional

bonnet bolts. It has a standard hexagonal head. An additional externalthread mates with the internal threads in the operating head of the hydraulicbonnet bolt tensioner. The hydraulic bonnet bolt has its operating rodpermanently secured in the machined hole in the center of the bolt.

• The hydraulic bonnet bolt tensioner consists of a compact tensioner unitwith a remote pump.

U II BOP

The Cameron U II BOP takes all of the features of the U BOP and adapts themfor subsea use in the 18-3/4” 10,000 and 15,000 psi WP sizes.

Like all other Cameron preventers, the rams in the U II BOP are pressure-energized. Wellbore pressure acts on the rams to increase the sealing force andmaintain the seal in case of hydraulic pressure loss. Seal integrity is actuallyimproved by increased well bore pressure. Other features of the U II BOPinclude:• Internally ported hydraulic stud tensioning system ensures that stud loading

is consistently accurate and even.• Bonnet seal carrier is available to eliminate the need for high makeup torque

on bonnet studs and nuts.• Hydraulically operated locking mechanisms, wedgelocks, lock the ram

hydraulically and hold the rams mechanically closed even when actuating

pressure is released. The operating system can be interlocked usingsequence caps to ensure that the wedgelock is retracted before pressureis applied to open the BOP.

• A pressure balance chamber is used with the wedgelocks to eliminate the possibility of the wedgelock becoming unlocked due to hydrostaticpressure.Other features include hydraulically opening bonnets, forged body and a

wide selection of rams to meet all applications. See pages 23 and 24 forrams available to fit the U II BOP.

One set of Cameron variable bore rams seals on several sizes of pipe orhexagonal kelly. Variable bore rams are available in the size ranges listed in thechart below. All rams listed are suitable for H2S service per NACE MR-01-75.

CAMRAM packers and top seals are standard for all U II BOP variable borerams. The variable bore ram packer contains steel reinforcing inserts similar tothose in the Cameron annular BOP packer. The inserts rotate inward when therams are closed so the steel provides support for the rubber which seals againstthe pipe.

CAMRAM High Temp Shearing Blind Ram Blade and Side Packers

Cameron shearing blind rams shear the pipe in the hole, then bend thelower section of sheared pipe to allow the rams to close and seal. Shearingblind rams can be used as blind rams during normal drilling operations.Features include of shearing blind rams include: • Large frontal area on the blade face seal reduces pressure on the rubber and

increases service life.• Cameron SBRs can cut pipe numerous times without damage to the cutting

edge.• The single-piece body incorporates an integrated cutting edge.• CAMRAM™ top seals are standard for all U II BOP shearing blind rams.• H2S SBRs are available for critical service applications and include a blade

material of hardened high alloy suitable for H2S service.• The Cameron shearing blind ram has a single-piece body with an integrated

cutting edge.

CAMRAM 350 U II BOP pipe ram packers and top seals are available forapplications which require higher temperature capabilities than standardCAMRAM packers and top seals.

CAMRAM 350 is available in all U II BOP sizes in which standard CAMRAMpackers and tops seals are available. At present, only pipe sizes (up to 6-5/8")are available.

UL and UM BOPs

The Cameron UL and UM BOPs are lightweight blowout preventersdesigned for easy maintenance and long life. Both designs complement theexisting line of U preventers with interchangeable bonnets that can be installedon any comparable size U BOP. The shearing capabilities of the UL and UMBOP bonnets are comparable to a U BOP bonnet with tandem boostersinstalled. The UL and UM both utilize an internal booster that results in areduced weight and length for the preventers and eliminates the need forexternal plumbing. The UM now replaces the UL since the UM bonnet featuresfull stroke operation that allows for one-step ram removal. Other features of theUL an UM BOPs include:• Bonnet seal carrier is available to eliminate the need for high makeup torque

on bonnet studs and nuts.

• Same bonnet used for both shear and pipe rams. The internal shear boostercan be reversed to act as a stroke-limiting device.

• Internal booster provides the force necessary for shearing pipe and at thesame time provides a reduced sealing force for long ram seal life.

• Hydraulically operated locking mechanisms, wedgelocks are available forsubsea applications.

• Most operating system seals can be replaced with the bonnet in the ram-change position without removing the bonnets.

• The UL and UM BOPs utilize the same rams as the U BOP.

Other features include hydraulically opening bonnets, forged body and a wideselection of rams to meet all applications.
