BOOTCAMP PROGRAM DESIGN FOR FAT LOSS

By Garry Robinson www.kaizenoutdoorfitness.com

Bootcamp Program Design Do your boot camp clients follow a structured training plan? Be hon-est. If a knowledgeable client questioned you about how your pro-gram was meant to help them with their goals would you be able give them an excellent answer? In this post, I will show you how to design an outdoor fitness program that will stand up to scrutiny and deliver great results. Do you ever find yourself frantically scrambling around the internet for looking for new workout ideas for your next bootcamp session?

Decide on the goal or outcome of the program. For example, you may be preparing a running group for their first 10k fun run. Or perhaps you need to ease new clients into your group gently, without making them sore. Maybe you are just starting out and don’t have any equipment yet. In this case, you might design a program for general physical preparedness based only on bodyweight exercis-es.Knowing the outcome of your training program is critical because it will dictate the number and nature of the workouts you choose to make up the program. Think about the training methods you will employ to achieve the end goal. That way, each individual workout will have its own purpose for being in the plan. I find it useful at this stage to allocate percentages to different types of workout and then select the actual workouts from my library of tried and tested workouts. I may write one or two new workouts for the program but mostly I will reuse existing ones in new ways in or-der to save time.Workout categories I select from are Running, High Intensity Training (HIT), Teamwork/Teamgames, Strength, and Interval training which consists of either Boxing or Circuit workouts. Decide on the duration of the program and how many times a week you will run it. Assign a different workout to each day based on the categories from the last step. My example 6 week fat loss program demands that clients train 3 times a week. Let’s walk through the process using a fat loss program as an example.

Outcome The goal of my fat loss training program is to burn calories while preserving lean muscle mass. I also want workouts that will invoke post-exercise oxygen consumption to trigger a longer-term fat-burning benefit. Ob-viously this would go hand in hand with a nutrition program but for now let’s just focus on just the physical training program.

Training Methods I decide that intense training is going to be a key part of this program to ensure maximum calorific burn. So let’s allocate 50% of the workouts to HIT sessions. The next priority is to preserve metabolism-boosting lean body mass so I am also going to dedicate 20% of the program to strength training. Interval training is effective at burning calories long after the workout is finished so let’s also incorporate some boxing and circuit training. Finally, we’ll end the program with a fun, team-based workout to finish on a high and leave our clients with a memorable experience. The breakdown of our 6-week fat loss program is 50% High Intensity Training 20% Strength 20% Interval training (boxing and circuits) 10% Fun and team games

Program Duration I want my clients to train 3 times a week to receive maximum benefit from the program so I spread workouts over the 6 weeks as follows.

www.kaizenoutdoorfitness.com

Week Monday Wednesday Friday

Week 1 HIT Circuit HIT

Week 2 Strength HIT Boxing

Week 3 HIT Strength HIT

Week 4 Strength HIT Circuit

Week 5 HIT Strength HIT

Week 6 Boxing HIT Teamwork

A total of 18 workouts will require 9 x HIT sessions, 4 x strength, 4 intervals (either circuits or boxing) and a fun, teamwork session to finish. Now I will go ahead and assign a different workout to each day of the program. You may already have a fold-er of tried and tested workouts to draw from. (If not, head over to the Kaizen Shop and grab a copy of Bootcamp Workout Ideas). If they are filed by category then you will soon make quick work of assigning workouts to days.

BOOTCAMP PROGRAM DESIGN – SUMMARY

Planning ahead has many advantages. Designing programs up front means that you can focus on the technical delivery of the sessions and be confident that you are doing the best for your clients. You will also earn a reputation as the trainer of choice in your area by being able to educate your clients WHY they are doing each workout and the role it plays in their personal fitness journey. If you choose to offer a money-back guarantee based on results then you can expect to blow away the competition in your area too.

Properly planned programs are good for your clients, and good for business.
