    MAUREEN EYKELENBOOM lives in Comox, B.C. and continues to be a regularcontributor to Island Gals Magazine, because Maureens story needs to be heard.

    On August 11, 2006, Maureens youngest son Andrew was killed by a 17-year-oldsuicide bomber while in Afghanistan, serving his country as a medic with our CanadiArmed Forces. Andrew (Boomer) was 23 years old.Boomers Legacy was founded the day after Andrew was killed, to honour hismemory and continue his service.     Kosovo 2011: $10K donated to a womens andchildrens shelter

    J amaica 2011: $6K spent at the HEART TechnicalSchool, a facility for inner city youth inKingston, Jamaica. Members of TaskForce Jamaica completed renovationprojects at the school, fixing andreplacing outdated equipment.

    Kandahar Airfield Ride in PlaceSpin-a-thon for Boomers Legacy:For 24 hours in October 2011, 528

    Canadian military members and civilian

    staff at the Kandahar Airfield participatedin a fundraising Spin-a-Thon, raising

    $24,259.70. The ride was organized as an

    extension of the annual Boomers Ride.

    Twenty-seven teams took turns cycling

    in place for the 24-hour duration. All 27

    teams combined cycled a total distance of

    19,887.89 kilometres.
