The story of the Climax Mine, honored during Boom Days 2011, began 131 years ago when prospector Charles Senter discovered a deposit of an unknown mineral on Bartlett Mountain near Fremont Pass, eventually identified as molybdenite. The metal came into its own during World War I for its ability to enhance the durability, toughness, corrosion-resistance and thermal performance of steel alloys.

Following are some of the highlights of the Climax Mine:

• The Climax Molybdenum Company begins mining and milling molybdenite ore in February 1918, but this lasts only 10 months.

• Renewed interest in the uses of molybdenum causes the Climax Mine to reopen in 1924, and Climax turns in the best financial performance of any Depression-era American company.

• During World War II, when molybdenum becomes a strategic metal, Climax is designated the top-priority mine in the United States and ordered to emergency production.

• Another round of emergency production takes place during the Korean War.

• In 1957, with 1,800 employees mining and milling 35,000 tons of ore per day, Climax ranks as the world’s largest underground mine.

• In 1958, the Climax Molybdenum Company merges with the American Metal Company to form American Metal Climax (AMAX). During the 1970s, 3,000 Climax employees mine 50,000 tons of ore per day from three underground levels and a newly developed open pit.

• Just as molybdenum demand peaks, the economic recession of 1980 slashes steel demand, forcing Climax to suspend production, operating only sporadically after that.

• In 1993, Cyprus Minerals buys out AMAX to form Cyprus-AMAX, which is in turn acquired by copper-mining giant Phelps Dodge in 1999.

• In 2007, Climax becomes a subsidiary of its current owner, Phoenix-based Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc., who today is getting the mine ready to reopen through a $700 million construction project. As of deadline, no date has been set for the reopening.

Boom Days celebrates the Climax Mine this year, with Bill Harrington serving as the parade grand marshal.

Harrington is a third-generation Leadvillite and has worked off and on – mostly on – at the mine since June 13, 1969, right after he graduated from high school.

Both sets of grandparents came to Leadville from the “old country,” and he recalls stories of his grandparents skating at the Ice Palace.

Harrington’s first position at the mine was doing cleanup at the crusher, which involved shoveling up the spills and placing them on a conveyer belt. His original plan was to work for the summer and then join the Navy.

“It was a good job and good money,” he said, so he remained at Climax where his father and brother also worked. At that time about 2,600 people were working at the mine.

Many of his positions involved working with the crushers including time at the open pit and underground, working at the tailings ponds and running cranes.

The miners accomplished a lot together, and the mine owners, such as Cypress, then Phelps Dodge and now Freeport McMoRan, all ran a very safe operation, he said.

One of his good memories concerns being part of the crusher crew that set a record of relining the crusher in 11 hours, a job that normally would have taken at least a few days. Harrington is fairly sure that record still stands.

In 1981, he experienced his first layoff at Climax. During this period he was lucky enough to find work in town both for the county and working as a mechanic on a conveyer in Stringtown.

He returned to Climax in 1984 and remained until 1987, when the mine essentially shut down.

Harrington then went to work at the Black Cloud Mine as a mechanic on the graveyard shift, also responsible for security. This gave him an opportunity to get back to painting, something that’s always been part of his life. A number of paintings were completed in the hoist room during that period.

Mines and railroads are his favorite subjects, and this year’s Boom Days belt buckle depicts the Climax Mine from a Harrington drawing.

Climax called Harrington back in 1989, and he has

remained at the mine ever since, although it was a m u c h d i f f e r e n t C l i m a x Mine than when he started. Harrington was one of four men on maintenance from that time until recently, when current mine owner Freeport- M c M o R a n i n s t i t u t e d construction at the mine with an eye to eventual reopening.

Barb Dolan beat out 13 male finishers in last year’s open-course burro race, completing the 21 miles in a time of three hours, 44 minutes and 35.9 seconds.

This year’s 63rd Anniversary International Pack Burro Race in Leadville will be held on Sunday, Aug. 7.

It will consist of a 21-mile-long course up Mosquito Pass, at an elevation of 13,183 feet and back, starting at 11 a.m. In the Leadville race, the burros carry packs weighing 35 pounds and are led by rope.

The short 15-mile course will loop around Bald Mountain. It begins at 11:15 a.m. Both races start and conclude on Harrison Avenue as part of the Boom Days celebration. For information, contact Burro Race, P.O. Box 884, Leadville, CO 80461.

Last year, in the long course, Jeff Bennett came in second at 4:13:21.02. It was Bennett’s first try at burro racing, using a rented animal. Third went to Curtis Imrie at 4:32:39.90.

In the 15-mile race, Diane VanderHoven took first place at 2:34:19.31. Second and third places went to Karen Thorpe and Mary Kuehster.

Any man who wins the three long Triple Crown races or any woman who wins the three short Triple

Crown races is awarded an additional $500 plus the Triple Crown trophy. Dave TenEyck, race director, said the men’s and women’s trophies are like the Stan-ley Cup, traveling from winner to winner or residing with the sponsor when there is no Triple Crown win-ner.

Following the opening ceremonies on Friday, Aug. 5, the Boom Days 2011 motorcycle events will take place starting around 5:30 p.m.

The kids’ bicycle events will again take place on Saturday, Aug. 6, following the parade (about noon).

Early sign-up for both events will start at 4 p.m. Friday in front of the courthouse. Kids also can sign up after 10 a.m. Saturday. Entry fee is $1 per event, and the proceeds will go to a local charity.

Motorcycle events will include all types of two-wheelers: choppers, cruisers, rockets and dirt – all combined.

Events are:• Plank ride: Consists of 50 linear feet of a 1”x6”

board followed by 50 linear feet of a 1”x4” board nailed down to the center of the street. Rides start with front wheels touching the first board. Multiple full rides go again.

• Slow ride: Two chalk boxes are laid out side by side, 2 feet by 50 feet. Two riders line up, one in each box. Whoever can keep from touching the lines or putting a foot down moves on to the next round.

• Honey, I’m Home: This is a timed event where the rider lies down on a bed and waits for the crazy spouse to yell, “Honey, I’m home!.” The rider has to slip on pants, and then jump through the window, get on the bike and race to the finish.

• Ball drop: Rider must have a partner on the back of his bike. He must weave through eight cans without putting a foot down while the passenger drops ping-pong balls into each can. Whoever gets the most balls in wins.

• Wienie bite: The rider needs his passenger to bite as much as possible from a hot dog that is hanging from a gallows. The rider cannot put his foot down.

Events feature motorcycles, bikes
