Mockingjay begins with Katniss walking through the remains of the old District 12. After her rescue by
13¶s rebels, Katniss reluctantly agrees to become "the Mockingjay", a symbol of the rebellion against the Capitol.
The only way she will become the mockingjay, however, is if the leader of District 13, President Coin, grant
immunity to all of the victors of the Hunger Games. She also makes it clear that she must kill the Capitol President
Snow. In a daring rescue, Peeta and other victors are rescued from the Capitol. However, Peeta has been ³hijacked´
into hating Katniss, and tries to kill her upon their reunion. The rebels take control of the districts and finally begin
an assault on the Capitol itself. Katniss goes, but the rebel leaders will only let her be a filmed symbol, not a
significant participant. However, an assault on a "safe" Capitol neighborhood goes wrong, their commander is
killed, and Katniss and her team flee further into the Capitol with the intent of finding and killing President Snow.
Katniss eventually finds herself pressing on by herself into Snow's mansion, which has been opened to
shelter Capitol children (but is actually intended to provide human shields). Afterwards, bombs are exploded that
kill many, injure Katniss, and destroy a rebel medical team, which includes hers sister Prim, barely 13 years old. The
rebels take over the capitol, and the leaders of the forces and the former victors vote 4-3 to host a final Hunger
Games for the children of the Capitol¶s leaders. Katniss votes yes as a result of her grief over Prim.
President Snow tells Katniss that President Coin, not the Capitol, ordered the final assault that killed Prim.
Katniss realizes that if this is true, the bombing may have been the result of a plan originally developed by her friend
Gale. Katniss realizes that she will never be able to look at Gale the same way, regardless of whether he was directly
involved in Prim's death. She has a lot of soul searching to do.
Katniss remembers when Snow in which they promised not to lie to each other. When she is supposed to
execute Snow, she realizes that he was telling the truth and kills Coin instead. A riot ensues and Snow is found dead.
Katniss is pardoned due to her ³insanity´ and returns to her home in District 12, as the victors quarters were the only
ones not destroyed in the bombing, so that Snow could play with Katniss¶s mind. Peeta returns soon after as well,
having recovered immensely from his brainwashing. Katniss realizes that she was in love with Peeta, not Gale, as
she can needs to peaceful, ³dandelion´ of peace in Peeta, not the fiery revolutionary in Gale.
In the epilogue, Katniss is an adult, more than fifteen years later. She is married to Peeta and they have two
children. The last Hunger Games originally planned were cancled, but she dreads the day her children learn the
details of their parents' involvement in both the Games and the war. She is scared of the lies they may have to tell,
but like she says in the very last line of the book, ³There are worse games to play´(Collins 390).

The novel Mockingjay has a lot to live up to. The final installment of The Hunger Games Series, it follows
two New York Times best sellers. And unlike many movies and books that follow successes, this book does not
disappoint. It¶s fast paced, and riddled with twists, turns, and heart wrenching moments. It¶ll make you laugh, cry,
and wonder, all while maintaining the themes of the series, which includes overcoming adversity. The added twist of
a hijacked Peeta just sneaks up on you, one of the best paragraphs of writing I¶ve ever seen. ³His features register
disbelief and something more intense that I can¶t quite place. Desire? Desperation? Surely both, as he sweeps the
doctors aside, leaps to his feet, and moves toward me. I run to meet him, my arms extended to embrace him. His
hands are reaching for me, too, to caress my face, I think. My lips are just forming his name when his fingers lock
around my throat.´(Collins 177). Plot twists and intense writing like that aren¶t found very often, and Collins has
certainly gifted us with the newest must read novel. I myself spent a good 3 hours just demolishing the book,
sneaking it into class and even reading as soon as I got home from school. Slate.com¶s David Plotz sums up this
book best, ³ Mockingjay is not a book that is meant to be read. The final installment in the addictive and deliriously
popular "Hunger Games" trilogy will be inhaled, swallowed, snorfled, snozzled, single-gulped, shoved down the
gullet, Jonah-to-our-whale'd.´ Mockingjay and the rest of the Hunger Games series has something for everybody.
Whether you¶re a fan of Love, War, Rebellion, Freedom, or just good old fashioned reading, Mockingjay is a crucial
component to any library list.
