TRY JUDGING/ESSAYEZ DE JUGER This workshop presentation to teachers of Law or Civics or Government or

Culture and Ethics will cover, first of all, the primary reasons why the Canadian Superior Courts Judges Association has created this educational resource which focuses primarily upon the role of judges in Canada’s administration of justice, and then identifies its salient features. Next, the ways through which this resource is presented to teachers and students is given, and lastly, and most importantly and engagingly, an opportunity will be given to attendees to put themselves into the shoes of their students by actually putting themselves into the shoes of judges. This is done by examining, in an inter-active and engaging fashion, one or two of the resource’s five case studies. Try Judging/Essayez de Juger is a multi-media educational programme designed to be integrated into Canadian high school curricula wherein law, civics, and social sciences are either mandatory or optional courses of study taught in either English or French. It introduces students to the role of judges in Canada’s judicial system, and encourages students to explore important concepts such as the Rule of Law, judicial independence, and judicial impartiality.

Nicole Muir & Ann Larnder PCSS 141 Research Discussion, Graduate Studies by Yukoners Meet colleagues who have conducted research and find out about challenges and rewards The research for Kids in the Hall was inspired by my passion to connect with youth who

skip class and stay at school. Research questions for this project included: what are common characteristics of students participating in in-school truancy, why are students skipping, and what actions can mitigate this problem. Students experiencing academic, social, or emotional challenges, that are often attributed to difficult home lives, were common characteristics amongst truant youth. Key reasons for in-school truancy included feeling safe, social interaction, environmental conditions, and personal choice. Several school, individual, family, and community actions were recommended to mitigate truancy. The findings highlight the importance of student-teacher relationships and classroom engagement as key factors in preventing truancy.
