Rome
Rome is the capital of Italy, the capital of Lazio
region and the principal town of the Province of
Rome. It is also the country's largest and most
populated city with over 2.7 million residents, plus
4.2 million persons that usually go to Roma every
day to work and live in the greater Rome area
(which can be approximately identified with its
administrative province).
According to the latest statistics conducted by
ISTAT, approximately 9.5% of the population
consists of foreign residents, while hundreds of
Romani gypsies live in illegal trailer camps on the
city's outskirts and there is a growing population of
homeless people in Rome, mostly not Italian and estimated at 7000.
Rome is a modern and urbanized city, with a very huge metropolitan area, but if we compare the total
population with the territory’s extension, Rome has one of the lowest population densities in Italy.
In fact, almost 68% of its territory are green areas, not built up area. The 34% of this green territory is
intended for agricultural practices and rural areas that are still inside the urban borders: this makes Roma a
unique city in Europe, one of the biggest agricultural cities.
Rome occupies the forth place in Europe as the greenest city.
Inside the urban borders of the city green areas, as parks and empty areas, are very large. This makes Rome
a city with a distinct geographic conformation.
Urban gardens in Rome
Rome has the characteristic of an agricultural city, with cultivated lands inside the urban borders and an
incredible number of parks and protected areas.
During the XXth century it was possible to find gardens in the city center, just close to the Coliseum or the
Imperial Fori, annexed to small houses built with recycled materials, the so-called baracche.
Today, in Rome the phenomenon of urban gardens is significant, many initiatives are becoming a political
subject, a request from citizens for a better urban environment in degraded areas.
Despite this, there is no support from the municipality for the creation of legal areas dedicated to urban
gardening and the citizens and the organizations find a lot of difficulties to start any legal urban garden
initiative. The urban agriculture in Rome has still an informal character, which means that the urban gardens
are created and managed without a renting contract or any other form of regulation for land appropriation –
all the community gardens in Rome come from citizens or associations’ initiatives, and the private sector
starts to be interested in it.
STATE OF THE ART IN ROME
13
Thanks to the work of studioUAP, an organisation dedicated to the architecture of public spaces and the
active participation, that implemented Zappata Romana project, Rome has now a map containing more
than 70 community gardens, community edible gardens and guerrilla spot gardens. Adding the 67 urban
gardens identified by the Municipality of Rome.
The map of Zappata Romana
www.zappataromana.net
In Rome the community-run green areas are more than 100:
51% of them are public parks and gardens where citizens take care of portions of public green.
26% of them are community gardens or community shared gardens, created for a social or
pedagogical purposes.
22% are hot spot gardens, created by “guerrilla gardening” actions The so-called guerrilla gardeners
carry out their actions at night, in relative secrecy, to sow and tend a new vegetable patch or flower
garden.
14
The Province of Rome, specifically the handicap sector, has created
in 2006 a provincial Forum of Social Farms, which adheres to the
National one. The Forum of Social Farms is composed of factory
farms or social cooperatives which gather together the practice of
agriculture and the orthoterapy with an integration and socio-
rehabilitation purpose. They carry out a social service, due to the
recognition to this therapies’ methods. In Italy a scientific
recognition of its benefits is ongoing. The Province of Rome
supports and promotes the social agricultural with studies,
researches and technical assistance to the adherents farms.
FERMENTI DI TERRA , THE PIGNETO’S URBAN GARDEN
Pigneto neighbourhood is historically characterised
by the mix of the poor and the popular that
nowadays has received new young trends open to
an artistic and cultural ferment. The urban garden
was born on the 8th of October 2011 from an
individual initiative. The main aim of the urban
garden was the establishment of a public shared
space through a concrete and not mediated action
of an informal group that, on a voluntary base, is in
charge of taking care of a little productive area
whose
fruits are
at all
people
disposal.
Address: Giardini Nuccitelli Persiani, Roma
Type of organization: Informal group, association/NGO
Surface: 40m2
No plots: 1
Management : The group is open to anybody is interested in taking care of the urban garden and in participating to all the activities of FERMENT DI TERRA. All the members are volunteers. The management of the garden is left to the individuals’ sense of responsibility. There are no fixed working shifts but we consult periodically on the work and the activities that have to be done in the garden. The communication is based on a mailing list and Facebook. All the activities are financed by the members of the group but for some specific activities for which there is the possibility to ask a fee from the participants that is reinvested in the garden activities.

Another aim has been to favour social cohesion and make the population aware of a more
responsible use of the public spaces. Another aim was to spread the culture related to the
agriculture, to increase the direct relationship with the land and to promote the production of our
own food, mostly among the young generations that otherwise don’t have the possibility to come
in contact with this reality.
The urban garden includes two big initiatives:
THE OPEN SPACE: Small neighbourhood parties are organised and vegetables are offered to the
people.
THE GARDEN IN THE KINDERGARTEN: This practice aims to stimulate the learning of pre-school
aged children through educational activities that increase their care for the environment. The
laboratory is divided in two parts:
There are practical educational activities that stimulate the contact with the natural elements and
teach about the relationship between cultivation – production – nutrition.
With the help of children’s parents, a garden is realised and managed further on with the children,
by experiencing the concrete practice of gardening and concepts like ecological cycle, ecosystem,
metabolism.
TERRA D’ ORTO
The organization TERRA D’ORTO ONLUS was
born in September 2010, following the pedagogy
of Don Luigi
Guanello, a priest
that lived at the end
of 1800’s beginning
of 1900’s, who
worked for the
rehabilitation, the
inclusion and the
assistance of disabled people. One of the most
important actions was the professional and
social integration of disabled people through
agricultural activities: the Casa Santa Rosa
structure is one of the first initiatives. The
association has the headquarter at Casa Santa
Rosa base in the Regional Park of Appia Antica
and it aims to promote social, training, sports,
leisure, job and integration activities for disabled
people and in general people with physical and social malaise.
Address: Via Talarchiana, Roma
Type of organization: Association/NGO
Surface: 5000 m2 managed by the Association, 4150 m2 owned by Casa Santa Rose of olive tree grove and orchard
No plots: 4 for the community shared garden plus 1 for the greenhouse and 2 historical frames of greenhouses
Management : The management of 5000 m2 of soil in loan for use contract, property of Casa Santa Rosa (Opera Don Guanella.) The Association is composed of a president and two members of the governing body. The president is responsible for the coordination of the activities and projects. In the activities are employed specialized educators that follow the gardens.
16
Therefore the gardening activities are one of the main aims and tools they use for therapeutic
purposes (horticultural therapy).
The newest project is the opening of a shared community garden in which families can cultivate
the land for their subsistence and aims to open the activities of the organization to a larger public.
Additionally it’s in progress the opening of a second shared urban garden, a summer camp integrated for
children and the transformation in a social far
AMICI DELLA TERRA MONTEVERDE
A garden created
3 years ago by
some citizens and
one old man
passionate with
the practice of
gardening in
order to avoid
from property speculation the area of the
national railways, not working anymore .After
the inauguration of the new railway, close to the
old one, 3 hectares of uncultivated field should
have been bought by the Municipality to create a
kindergarten, a playing park and a didactical
garden. The municipality still didn’t buy this land
and even if it’s still property of national railways,
some citizens started some initiatives to defend
the environment and eventual property
speculation.
The neighborhood Committee planted and took care of more than 50 trees, another association a
flower bed, while the group Amici della Terra-Monteverde organized a didactical garden right next
to the Senior Citizen Center and to the bowling. The garden is in the middle of the city, hidden by
the buildings and placed on old railways and vegetables produced from it are given as a present to
the inhabitants of the neighbourhood. Today it is managed by 2 women and 2 men, one of them is
the same from the beginning and they organise paths for blind persons and vegetable dances that
help the growing of vegetables.
Even if the garden is not legally recognised they continue to work in it and they are organising
educational activities for the school.
Address: Viale Quattroventi, Roma
Type of organization : Informal group
Surface: 1100m2

Management Antonio Antonelli takes care of the different phases of the cultivation, follows the participants of an annual class, explains to the children and visitors the secrets of the garden. Maria Antonietta Cossu and Anna Pugni take care of the aromatic and medicinal herbs bed, the relations with schools and the organization of workshops. Moreover they teach dances dedicated to vegetables, flowers, trees and to the ritual of seeding, by revealing the esoteric language of the garden. Vincenzo helps Antonio in the garden and the constructions of wooden artifacts.

ORTO DIDATTICO DI CAMPAGNA AMICA DEL CIRCO MASSIMO
The project was born in 2010 in order to promote and
support the practice of urban gardening made by citizens.
Due to the proliferation of urban gardens in Italy, the
Foundation aims to offer its expertise and its network of
farmers and nursery to people who wanted to learn and
act as sustainable consumers and citizens. Each garden has
to respect the values of Campagna Amica that are the
support to the local agriculture, a sustainable consumption,
the respect for the environment and for the biodiversity.
CAMPAGNA AMICA created also an educational and
demonstrative garden inside a Farmer’s Market,
placed in the city centre, in order to embellish and
liven the external court of the farmer’s market. Its
creation is linked to the purpose of making aware the
consumers of environmental and healthy food issues.
The Market is united to a garden placed in the court as
a demonstration that urban gardening can be done
everywhere. There have been educational activities
with an important number of schools. Many events
was organised as “Botte da Orti” in 2011 and in the
2012 there will be “Culinaria” event about food from
all Italy. The Garden is always open to the Farmer’s
Market visitors or visitors in general. In the Farmer’s
Market is present also a restaurant with local products
and there is the possibility to have meals in the area of
the urban garden.
ORTI URBANI GARBATELLA
One of the first initiative of urban gardens in Rome. After 15 years
of environmental actions for the right to a greener city and
neighbourhood, in 2009 a group of associations and citizens started
to cultivate a piece of land just behind the base of Lazio Region. Today the garden counts on more
than 60 individuals and different organisations, that are still waiting the assignation of the land

from the Municipality. They organise many activities as social events, Permacultura training,
Japanese garden training, and there are some good examples of inclusion activities for disabled
people and migrants.
The garden in inside a public park of 45000m. The municipality of Rome is intended to assign the
area of the garden to Legambiente Garbatella
association. Still there are no formal contracts with
the public institution. Two of the associations that
exist in the public Park of Via Rosa Raimondi
Garibaldi is the “Orti Urbani Garbatella/Hagape
2000” and “Asinitas” Orti urbani Garbatella
legambiente.
HAGAPE 2000
The Association HAGAPE2000 was founded on July
2000 by a groups of parents of disabled people,
youngsters and adults. The organisation was born
in order to offer a meeting point for people with
disabilities where they could carry out recreational
and creative activities. The aim is to give them the
possibility to socialize and to continue their
educational and learning development, especially
after the end of their school experience. The
organisation aims to protect the rights of disabled
people and it is an aggregation point for the families who deal with disability issues and who often
experience isolation. The management and the coordination of the organisation are in charge of a
Committee composed of the parents, members of the association, that are involved for free in the
administrative work of the organisation as well as in the laboratories assigned to them. In this way
the members –parents contribute in an active way to the development of the association.
The laboratories are the most important part of the activities we carry on and they are opened to
other external people in order to favour integration and awareness.
ASINITAS
The Asinitas NGO takes on the management of the garden from January 2012, after the
assignation made by Legambiente.
The association, following the principles of active education, promotes the importance of creating
environments for individual and communitarian growth, for socialisation, intercultural conviviality
and cohabitation. Mainly in the garden are involved young students and adults from the L2 School

Management The group is made by volunteers. The activities in the gardens are regulated by an international regulation, shared by all the participants to the project. Modification to the internal regulations are made collectively and based on the experiences of every day. The activities are coordinated by a Managemetn committee, responsible for the respect of the common rules and the maintenance of the common areas inside the garden : water system, fruit trees, external hedges as well as the management and administration of the annual fee (50euros) re-invested in the urban garden.

of Italian language for refugees, asylum seekers and immigrants of Asinitas, but also teachers and
volunteers.
Having the management of a piece of land responds to the objective of offering the immigrants
paths that facilitate socialisation, meeting, intercultural dialogue and new communitarian feelings
of belonging to a place and a group. All of this is realized thanks to the care and cultivation of the
earth and of the green spaces, activities that help promote an exchange of knowledge and
competences between people with different origins in order to bring them together and put them
into value. In the garden also are happening work-shops for learning Italian language, work-shops
to improve the vocabulary with words describing the nature, the tools and the ways of cultivation.
ORTO DIDATTICO LAVANGAQUADRA
A group of citizens
from the 6th Municipio
of Rome well
organised who are
searching for a non-
contaminated area in
order to create an urban garden. The movement
was born in 2011 and counts 143 citizens
involved today and in different way active for
creating a legal area. There have been already
two lands found and good for gardening, but
after an analysis of the soil they found that it is
contaminated. Now they are trying to depurate
the land with some plants, but this system lasts
long time. They have inaugurated the ORTO
DIDATTICO LAVANGAQUADRA where every
weekend they organise social and theatre
events.
They are organised on an horizontal system and the
communications are based on a mailing list, website, a facebook
page and meeting in a restaurant or social assembly. The
organisation of this group can suggest a method of work. They
also invented the “nursery widespread”, seeds in pots that have
been distributed to the group’s members and when it’s time they will plant those vegetables
there.

The MAIE project “Multifunctional Agriculture in Europe – Social and Ecological Impacts on
Organic Farms” consists of representatives from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Italy, Portugal, the
Netherlands, Finland and Germany.
Our vision is to develop a variety of ways of spreading knowledge about social farming by:
promoting the social farming movement,
supporting rural areas to work in well-organized networks,
developing fields of social work in combination with agriculture, and
establishing links between movements and activities in Europe.
Multifunctional agriculture and social farming provides opportunities for individual personal
development and promotes quality of life. It fosters a sustainable approach to managing nature and
the revitalisation of rural areas. Social farming involves many individuals working together according to
common ideals and social values to develop small-scale alternatives to highly rationalised farming and
fierce competition on prices. In the long term, multifunctional
agriculture opens up the prospect of a potential paradigm shift.
Project objectives and methodology
Qualification
Development of a 120-hour curriculum, which will qualify students,
teachers, trainers, social workers, farmers and educationalists in various aspects of Multifunctional
Agriculture/Social Farming. The material will be developed in a modular design and offered in eight
languages as an online teaching tool. It will be targeted at people who need extra occupational

Multifunctional Agriculture/Social Farming provides the opportunity to
link partners across the sectors of agriculture, social services, health-
care, justice and education. Via the focus groups, we will stress
Multifunctional Agriculture/ Social Farming as an integrative tool which
can be used not only for agricultural purposes, but also to provide other
benefits; for example, old people are offered places to live in a rural farm environment, and prisons
offer their prisoners work in forestry and agriculture.

Gianicolo
The Janiculum (Gianicolo, in Italian) is a hill in western Rome. Although the second-tallest hill (the tallest being Monte Mario) in the contemporary city of Rome, the Janiculum does not figure among the proverbial Seven Hills of Rome, being west of the Tiber and outside the boundaries of the ancient city.
Sights The Janiculum is one of the best locations in Rome for a breathtaking view of the innumerable domes and bell towers that pierce the skyline of the multi-hued architectural museum. Other sights on the Janiculum include the church of San Pietro in Montorio, built upon the site formerly thought to be where St Peter was crucified; the small shrine known as the Tempietto, designed by Donato Bramante, marks the supposed site of Peter's death. The Janiculum also houses a Baroque fountain built by Pope Paul V in the late-17th century, the Acqua Paola, and several foreign research institutions, including the American Academy in Rome and the Spanish Academy in Rome. The Hill is also the location of the Botanical Garden of "La Sapienza" University, the Palazzo Montorio, residence of the Ambassadors of Spain, and the Villa Doria Pamphili, the largest public park in the city. Ancient history and mythology The Janiculum was a center for the cult of the god Janus, and the fact that it overlooked the city made it a good place for augurs to observe the auspices. In Roman mythology, Janiculum is the name of an ancient town founded by the god Janus (the two-faced god of beginnings). According to Livy, the Janiculum was incorporated into ancient Rome during the time of king Ancus Marcius in order that it not be occupied by an enemy. It was fortified by a wall and a bridge constructed across the Tiber to join it to the rest of the city. The meridional side of the hill was part of the Caesaris Gardens together with the plain along the Tiber. The emperor constructed there a somptous villa to host Cleopatra.
19th century to present The Janiculum is the site of a battle in 1849 between the forces of Garibaldi, defending the revolutionary Roman Republic and French forces fighting to restore the Temporal power of the Pope over Rome.
Daily at noon, a cannon fires once from the Janiculum in the direction of the Tiber to signal the exact time.
The neighbourhood became famous thanks to Pasolini’s film "Ragazzi di vita" (‘Boys of life’/’Hustlers’).
The neighbourhood covering most of the hill is generally called "Monteverde", having two parts: the new Monteverde and the old Monteverde. Monteverde Vecchio (Old Monteverde), is a
23
neighbourhood first mentioned in the town planning in 1909 as a residential area with alleys and gardens called ‘The Garden City’. It hosts many pubblic figures like politics, film directors, actors, singers and writers.
Trastevere
Trastevere is a rione XIII of Rome, on the west bank of the Tiber, south of Vatican City. The area began to be considered part of the Roman city under Augustus, who divided Rome into 14 regions (regiones in Latin); modern Trastevere was the XIV and was called Trans Tiberim, meaning literally "beyond the Tiber". Since the Ancient Roman period, Trastevere had a multicultural population. The inhabitants of Trastevere, called Trasteverini, developed a culture of their own. The sightseeing in Trastevere includes two of the most ancient churches in Rome: Basilica di Santa
Maria in Trastevere, and Santa Cecilia in Trastevere. History In Rome's Regal period (753-509 BC), the area across the Tiber belonged to the Etruscans. Rome conquered it to gain control of and access to the river from both banks. By the time of the Republic c. 509 BC, the number of sailors and fishermen making a living from the river had increased, and many had taken up residence in Trastevere. Immigrants from the East also settled there, mainly Jews and Syrians. Since the end of the Roman Republic the quarter was also the center of an important Jewish community, which inhabited there until the end of the Middle Ages. With the wealth of the Imperial Age, several important figures decided to build their villas in Trastevere, including Julius Caesar (his part of Trastevere was called the Horti Caesaris, Caesar’s Gardens). In the Middle Ages Trastevere had narrow, winding, irregular streets. There was a strong contrast between the large, opulent houses of the upper classes and the small, dilapidated houses of the poor. The streets were and are still covered with sampietrini (cobble stones), suitable for carriages.
Modern day Nowadays, Trastevere maintains its character thanks to its narrow cobbled streets lined by medieval houses. At night, natives and tourists alike flock to its many pubs and restaurants. The area is also home to several foreign academic institutions including The American University of Rome and John Cabot University (both of which are private American universities), the Rome campus of the Thomas More College of Liberal Arts, the American Pratt Institute School of Architecture therefore serving as home to an international student body. The unique character of this neighborhood has attracted artists, foreign expats, and many famous people.
