Ever wondered what happens to your recycling when it leaves your yellow recycling bin? Midcoast Waste Services and JR Richards & Sons offer you the opportunity to find out by touring the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) located at the Tuncurry Waste Management Centre

Materials Recovery Facility

Using state of the art technology the MRF processes an average of 40 tonnes of recycling each day. That's about 1250 tonnes per month or 14 000 tonnes per year.

What is the MRF?Opened in 2013 the MRF is responsible for processing all the recyclables from the Great Lakes, Greater Ta r e e a n d G l o u c e s t e r a r e a s .

Once at the MRF the differentmaterials are sorted and are then either used locally or sent to market to be recycled into new products.

MRF ToursVisitors to the MRF will be taken on a guided tour of the facility. Along the way they will get a behind the scenes look at each step of the sortingprocess, from the receival of recyclables into the plant right through to the bailing of products ready to be shipped to market.

T h e f a c i l i t y b o a s t s a l a r g e Education Room which offers a birds-eye view of the processing plant. Here visitors will be shown an audio visual presentat ion containinginformation on everything they haveever wanted to know about recycling.

Tours are open to all school and community groups and can be specially tailored to fit any age or interest group.

Community Groups

Tours take approximately 2 hours andare limited to 50 adults (however special arrangements may be madeto accommodate larger groups if possible).

Tours of the MRF are open to all Community and Interest Groups. Thetours are free of charge and run byappointment only.

Free Tea and Coffee are provided andthere are facilities for groups to bringtheir own refreshments to enjoy

during their tour.

School GroupsMRF Tours are open to school groups ofall ages, from kindergarten through to

tertiary students.

Tours are individualised depending on age group and can be adapted tocompliment any school subject or curriculum unit.

Each tour takes approximately 1 ½ to2 hours and are filled with a variety of fun educational games and activities as well as an audio visual presentation.

Tours are run free of charge and spacesare limited to 50 secondary students or 60 Primary students.

Safety on Site

The MRF is and active working site and as such Health and Safety are importantin all areas of the facility. All visitors to the MRF must wear completely enclosedshoes or entry will not be permitted.

Once on site visitors will be given a safety induction and issued with all the necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) they will require for the duration of their visit.
