Instructions for Rock Star Sentence Sorting

Sample Story: Cinderella

The story sample is based on the basic Cinderella story. Before you begin the sample activities, however, I suggest reading Cinderella together with your class or at least talking about it. Remember, the first one or two times you work through the assignment templates there is bound to be some confusion – it may be only one student—but it will be there, so please watch for it. Remember, the key phrases…”most of my students have to “get it” most of the time…or I’m not doing my job.” The script is designed to be easily adapted to the all of the Cinderella stories. GOAL: To gain a better understanding of the story through reading and writing.

Directions: Say: Close your eyes and remember how Cinderella felt when she couldn’t go to the ball. (pause) What happened? (pause) Think about when the fairy godmother appeared (pause) and then when Cinderella met the prince. (pause) Turn to your neighbor/partner and discuss what happened. Say: This activity is called sentence sorting. You have a sheet of paper with sentences written in a grid. Hold up the piece of paper. (pause until all of your students hold up their papers). Now, look at the sentences. Notice that they are not in order. (Pause) Are the sentences in order (signal and wait for students to respond “no”). Say: Your job is to put them in the correct order. You will cut the strips and order them. Remember to look for the main idea first and then to fill in with supporting details. Turn to your neighbor and discuss the directions for this assignment. Raise your hand when you are finished with your discussion and you both know what you are going to do. Begin (Wait until all hands are up before you set them off to cut sentences into strips). Any questions? Begin. After students have cut sentences into strips they will use the sentences assembled to create a paragraph for their essays. This activity is designed to flow seamlessly into Essay Writing. This is one way students can jump start the essay writing process: sort the sentences then copy them onto the template and write away. Make sure you model the whole process – checking for understanding all along the way – before you let them out on their own.

Chapter 1: Sentence Sorting

GOAL: To gain a better understanding of the story through reading and writing.

Directions for Classroom Use: Cut the sentence strips and assemble them into a complete paragraph.

The prince searched the kingdom for the foot to fit the glass slipper. Cinderella’s father married a woman with two daughters who mistreated Cinderella.

Cinderella lost her glass slipper.

Cinderella was forced to do all of the household chores.

The prince of the kingdom decided to have a ball to choose a wife, but Cinderella’s invitation to the ball was lost.

Out of nowhere her fairy godmother appeared.

When students are on the independent study portion of this lesson walk around and check for student understanding and mastery. Back table and intervene with any student or students who are not understanding the lessons.

Instructions for Teacher Guided Essay Writing Sample Script: Say: You’ve put your sentence strips in order. Now we are going to turn the strips into an introductory paragraph for a response to literature essay. A response to literature is just that: your response to the literature you just read. Say: Turn to your neighbor and discuss the order each of you put your sentence strips in. Please talk about the reasons you put them in your particular order. I’ll give you two minutes…begin…(set timer). Say: Now, look at the writing template I just handed out. Notice that the large box labeled “Paragraph 1” has seven little boxes in it. Think about why there are seven boxes (pause). Think about how many sentence strips you have. (pause) We are going to put one sentence in each box. Do it with me. On your template, put one sentence in each box as follows. Read the sentences aloud as you write them, giving students ample time to fill in their blanks.

Cinderella’s father married a woman with two daughters who mistreated Cinderella.

Cinderella was forced to do all of the household chores.

The prince of the kingdom decided to have a ball to choose a wife, but Cinderella’s invitation to the ball was lost.

Out of nowhere her fairy godmother appeared.

Cinderella lost her glass slipper.

The prince searched the kingdom for the foot to fit the glass slipper.

Say: We now have our introduction. Except we need a final sentence that tells your reader why all of the sentences tie together and what your essay is about. This is your thesis statement. Remember that your topic paragraph is the map of your paper and the thesis statement is your final destination. It let’s your reader where you are going. Say: Look at paragraph 2. We are going to take the second sentence from paragraph one and put it into the first box. Read the sentence aloud as you write it on the transparency and allow time for students to fill in their boxes. Be structured at first and dictate which students to fill in for “Main Idea” and “Detail 1”, by talking out the example. Guide them through the process. As they become more familiar and comfortable with writing, provide less guidance. Eventually, they will be able to completely work on their own with the template and beyond.
