“Birth is a beginning, death is a destination, and life is a journey.” Who hasn’t read this phrase and not understood that this is about each of us. It is about you and me. “All who live must die,” it says in our special prayer book at the house of mourning. We can’t dispute this. It is a fact, but the journey we can control. How we live our lives is so important. As Jews, our lives aren’t lived for some future reward, but to make a difference today so that tomorrow will be better for others. Some people may make a difference for the world or a nation. Others may impact one community or one person or place. Regardless, whatever you do to benefit tomorrow, you have fulfilled your Jewish mission on earth. This afternoon we come to remember a grandparent, parent, child, sibling, relative, or friend. There is a name, a face, a moment, a memory we want to recall. For some this person left us recently, while for others it may have been years. It doesn’t matter, as the ache we feel at this time of Yizkor is real. Remember with all your heart and soul. Remember the good they did. Remember the life they lived. Remember how they made a difference to you and maybe even to others. As long as you recall and remember, this person continues to live. Very few days go by that I don’t think about my parents and their desire to see a better world. They live on in my heart, mind, and actions. I know that those you think about live on through you. May the memories of our loved ones bring blessing and may their souls be bound up in the bond of everlasting life. Rabbi David Komerofsky

Remembering Those We Love

R emembering those we love who have gone from life is a regular activity for the Jew. We remember them on the anniversary of their deaths, during the major festivals of the Jewish calendar and during the High Holy Days, in addition to the significant times in our personal lives. Yet Judaism is not a cult of the dead.

T hrough memory we give increased and enduring value to their lives. We declare by our fond recollections that we were touched by those who went before us and that that touch changed our lives forever. Their physical presence was temporary, but their effect upon the world was and is eternal.

C omfort comes when we are able to balance the temporal with the eternal. The contemplation of our beloved dead puts our lives into perspective and should urge us to become the blessing to future generations which our forbearers are to us. Then their memories and our lives become true blessings.

In Cherished Memory

T he following pages contain the names of those whom we remember in our Prayers of Memorial on this sacred Day of Atonement. As we recall their names, a thousand ties of precious memory bind us to them everlastingly. They live in our hearts in this cherished hour. They live with God, to Whom we entrust their souls with faith serene and unshaken.

The Mitzvah of Kaddish

T he act of remembering is sanctified by the Mitzvah of Kaddish. In the back of this book, room is provided to record the names and dates of death of dear ones for whom you wish to say Kaddish. You may also insert the Friday night on or just following the anniversary of their death. It is proper to kindle a Yahrzeit candle, or light, the evening before the anniversary of death. It is also a sanctifying act to say Kaddish with the congregational service on the Service of the Yahrzeit. You are encouraged and invited to do so.

Prayer of Memorial

T his hour revives in us memories of loved ones who are no more. What happiness we shared when they walked among us! What joy, when, loving and loved, we lived our lives together.

M onths or years may have passed, yet we feel near to them. Our hearts yearn for them. Though the bitter grief has softened, a duller pain abides, for the place where once they stood is empty now forever. The links of life are broken; but the links of love and longing cannot break.

W e see them not with the eye of memory, their faults forgiven, their virtues grown larger. We remember them with gratitude and bless their names.

A nd we remember as well the men and women who but yesterday were part of our congregation and community. To all who cared for us and labored for the well-being of our people and humanity, we pay tribute. May we prove worthy of carrying on the tradition of our people and our faith; for now the task is ours.

W e think, too, of the whole household of Israel and its martyrs. The tragedy of our own age is still a fresh wound within us. And we recall how often, in ages past, our people walked through the flames of the furnace. Merciful God, let the memory never fade of the faithful and upright of our people, who have given their lives to hallow Your name. Even in death they continue to speak to us of faith and courage. They rest in nameless graves; but their deeds endure, and their sacrifices will not be forgotten. Their souls are bound up in the bond of eternal life. No evil shall touch them: they are at peace.

I n gratitude for all the blessings our loved ones, friends, teachers, and martyrs of our people have brought to us, to our people, and to humanity, we dedicate ourselves anew to the sacred faith for which they lived and died, and to the tasks they have bequeathed to us. Let them be remembered for blessing, O God, together with the righteous of all peoples. Amen. ~ The Gates of Prayer

We Remember Them

W e remember with sorrow those whom death has taken from our midst. Taking these dear ones into our hearts with all our beloved, we recall them now with reverence. In the rising of the sun and in its going down, we remember them. In the blowing of the wind and the chill of winter, we remember them. In the opening buds and in the rebirth of spring, we remember them. In the blueness of the sky and in the warmth of summer, we remember them. In the rustling of leaves and in the beauty of autumn, we remember them. In the beginning of the year and when it ends, we remember them. When we are weary and in need of strength, we remember them. When we are lost and sick at heart, we remember them. When we have joys we yearn to share, we remember them.
