1 Opus THEATER ON THE LAKE Hello friend! Are you sitting down? Good. Because you’re about to experience the 2012 season of Theater on The Lake, for the first time selected through a process involving two artistic curators. We thought curators only worked in gardens and museums, but there you have it. We’re curators. Seriously, though, we love being working artists in Chicago, a city so rich with imaginative and emotional theater that it makes choosing only eight plays for you a hair-graying, heartbreaking, but ul- timately exciting, proud-parents moment. Here, you will encounter world premieres and Chicago premieres; scripts written out of necessity, scripts written through workshopping with an ensemble, scripts adapted from great works, and scripts written right before your very eyes—carved out of the air and the summer moment. The shows you’ll experience this summer have stopped us in our tracks, made us think, laugh, and cry. But perhaps most importantly, they’ve made us dream. Our MissionTo do white hot drama, in a tiny black box, with a little red twist.

What We Do

We stage at least five contemporary dramas per year in our intimate 40-50 seat black box theatre. We do white hot drama, from name-brand blockbusters, to risky new work, and obscure buried treasures, that pack emotional force, examine moral dilemmas, and reveal greater truths…by transforming our tiny black box and its explosive immediacy into a thematic asset, specifically tailored for every show and intended to close the gap between actor and audience, thus blurring the line between seating and staging…by utilizing a little red twist in the concept and design of each production, to provide a totally unique theatre experience that is simultaneously intimate and comfortable, yet intense, edgy, and thrilling, at a distance only inches away.

11Ike Reilly/TJ & Dave

The New York Times said of Ike Reilly, Chicago native, that “Nobody in America rocks the common man’s experience in such uncommon ways.” The former hotel doorman and his ferocious band the Ike Reilly Assassination have slithered all across America in the true spirit of independent music and unflinching self expression. Reilly’s songs can be heartbreaking and knife wielding and here at Theater on the Lake you can see Reilly performing solo with just his guitar and his wit as he delivers his unique songs and a commentary style that is both hilarious and disarming.

STAGE LEF T SEASON 31

August 1-October 7, 2012the world premiere of

IMPENETRABLEby Mia McCullough ^directed by Greg Werstler *In a well-to-do Northshore suburb, a local spa causes outrage with a billboard ad featuring a gorgeous woman in a bikini, superimposed with arrows highlighting “problem” and offering “solutions.” Stage Left favorite Mia McCullough (Chagrin Falls, Spare Change, Echoes of Another Man) is back with a play developed in LeapFest 7.

January 5-February 10, 2013A co-production with Boho Theatre!!

PYGMALIONby George Bernard Shawdirected by Artistic Director Vance SmithIn this classic play that inspired the musical My Fair Lady, Professor Higgins, a Vic-torian dialect expert make a bet that he can teach Cockney flower-girl Eliza Doo-little to pass as a “proper lady.” Stage Left teams with fellow Theater Wit Resident Company Boho Theatre to celebrate the 100th anniversary of this timeless story.

April 20–May 26, 2013the Chicago premiere of

RABBITby Nina RaineIt’s Bella’s twenty-ninth birthday party: a wild night at the bar where friends can’t stand each other, ex-lovers can’t let go, and only one person knows the birthday girl’s father is dying. Nina Raine’s Rabbit is a brutally funny, surprisingly poignant look at how men and women see each other and relate in a world where nobody knows the rules anymore.
