Detailed drawings and plans can be found on the P&C website at http://bolwarrapandc.wordpress.com (once you click the link to the P&C website, there is an announcement on the home page and a link to the playground plans, or you can look under the Fundraising tab for the plans). Bolwarra community is once again supporting Operation Christmas Child (a project of the Samaritan’s Purse). Just as simple, kind words can bring hope and joy to children, so can the giving of a simple gift. Through the power of a simple gift you can open up a whole new life for children caught in the midst of war, famine, extreme poverty and natural disasters. We live in an extremely lucky country and if you have been fortunate to travel to countries that experience extreme poverty you would realise that we are blessed to be raising our children in Australia. Last year we had over 220 boxes donated by families and staff. If you would like a shoebox to fill you can simply tear off the slip in the ‘tear off’ section in the newsletter and return to the office and a box will be given to your child. You then choose a gender and age for the child you are preparing the box for, purchase gifts (and add a personal note or photo of your family) then send it back to school with $9 included for postage. The box comes with some suggestions for gifts etc. Whose life will your shoe box change this year? Congratulations to our students (Jessica, Olivia, Jasmine and Sybylla) who participated in the Maitland Drama Workshops last week and were selected for the Regional Primary Drama Showcase in Newcastle on 5 th September. Well done girls! We welcome Mrs Moore back from her trip to Canada on Friday and thank Mrs Shiplee. We also thank Mr Robert West for taking 5A for the last few weeks while Mr Allen is overseas. Fortunately for Mr West he has been offered full time work for the rest of the year and starts next Monday. Mrs McLaren (who’s very excited) will be taking 5A for the last ten days of Mr Allen’s leave. The l ibrary will be covered by Tye Culbert.

Dear Parents and Care-givers I’m so excited!! We canvassed five different playground companies with the final company ‘Moduplay’ providing us with the best quote. Essay writing structure: Structuring an essay is easy when you know how. There are many different types of essays (or responses) and they can have many purposes, but the basic structure is the same. This fact sheet lets you in on the secret. A huge thank you to families for supporting the Book Week activities, especially the parade as all of the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves!

The latest students to complete The Premier’s Reading Challenge are Oliver and Caitlin. This Friday 23rd August is the last day to have your books entered so they can be validated. Well done to all of the students who completed this year’s challenge. Your certificates will arrive later in the year. A note from your friendly neighbourhood counsellor Managing Bedwetting: Fifteen percent of five-year-olds or around three to four children in a first grade class, are not dry every night. Eighty-five percent of children eventually outgrow bedwetting without treatment. In the teenage years, only two to five percent of children, or one child per class, continue to wet their bed. Boys are much more likely to wet the bed than girls. If your child does wet the bed it is important to first rule out medical causes such as infection. Most bedwetting is what doctors call primary enuresis, meaning the child has always had difficulty with bed wetting. However, if bedwetting reoccurs after the child has been dry for a long period of time, it’s termed secondary enuresis and doctors must look more closely at the cause. Secondary enuresis could occur with psychological stress or trauma, and the child may need counselling or other treatment. Bedwetting is an inherited medical condition. A child has a 40 per cent chance of being a bedwetter if one parent has been a bedwetter and these statistics increase to 80 per cent if both parents were. Some children may have a deficiency of ADH (anti-diuretic hormone), the hormone that is released during sleep and concentrates the urine so that the kidneys produce less of it during sleep and the bladder doesn't overfill. Some steps toward dry night: 1. The first step in becoming dry is wanting to be dry. Help motivate with positive reinforcements and rewards chosen together. 2. Teach your child how the body works. Explain how the brain, body and bladder work and how the brain and bladder need to 'talk' to each other for the child to start being dry. 3. Try not to restrict fluids before bedtime. This keeps the bladder capacity small. Extra drinks help the bladder stretch and may in fact encourage dry beds. 4. Reduce sugary foods and drinks as these may have a diuretic effect. Rebecca O’Brien Birthday Book Club

When it is your child’s birthday, they have the opportunity to donate a book of their choice (already purchased by the library) for the small cost of $6.00. The books will be presented to the children on assembly. Each book will have a special message inside saying who has donated the book. The birthday child will be the first to borrow the book. The following children have recently joined the Bolwarra Birthday Book Club: Daniel, Lucy and Finn.

CANTEEN NEWS

I am overwhelmed by the support the students, parents, grandparents, teachers and local businesses are giving the canteen in so many different ways. By purchasing from the canteen, baking and making things, donating items (including HOUSE at Green Hills and Super Dollar Maitland) or volunteering time. We loved seeing one of our school scripture teachers in the canteen on Wednesday and we also loved serving our parents a nice hot cuppa and a little treat at the Book Week parade. Thank you to everyone who has donated brown lunch bags, keep them coming, we use around 150 each week. The council recently completed a food safety inspection and I am very proud to say our result was excellent, we have made a few very minor recommended changes. We have also recently completed a risk assessment which has also resulted in a few small changes. The risk assessment will be placed on the noticeboard in the canteen for all to read. At the P&C meeting on Monday night the decision was made to permanently replace goujons with tenders. We know that there will be a few children who will be upset by this, but the canteen does have many other food options available for them to try. This decision was based on feedback received from the volunteers that the tenders are much easier to prepare as it involves much less counting and handling. I am very excited to announce our Term 3 Red Day on Monday 16th September. Children will be treated to a chicken burger, chocolate and juice for $6. You have the option to order on the attached note at the end of the newsletter, or order online. All online orders will go in the draw to win a $100 Stockland Gift Voucher.

Next week's specials are; fresh fruit from Sally & Patricks 30c, fresh fruit yoghurt ice blocks 50c, apple crumble 20c, fruit juice jelly 20c, garlic bread 30c, banana bread 50c, a variety of muffins 50c. Last Friday we had a record number of 84 online orders, let's see if we can beat it this week as we are trying to encourage as many families as possible to register for online lunch orders during our three month trial period. Why not give it a try, or let your children have a go themselves. You can order your lunch days/weeks/months in advance. Visit www.flexischools.com.au to register, or download the ipad app. Kristi (0431 432 716)

CANTEEN ROSTER TERM 3 Thank you to all the volunteers who have come forward and put their name down in spots we are desperately trying to fill, it is greatly appreciated. The roster has been looking very good but we still have a few vacancies to get us through to the end of the term. Please do not hesitate to contact me on 0439939934 if you see a spot you could help us out with. Thank you to all who volunteered at the canteen yesterday during our Book Week parade. There were lots of muffins and coffee enjoyed whilst watching the parade. Thanks Amanda

P&C NEWS Thank you to everyone who has sent back their form for the Election Day Stall. We are still in need of people to spend an hour or two on the day to help at the stall. If you are available please let us know as soon as possible. If you are able to bake also please let us know. We have sent home six recipes to use however, if you want to bake we are happy for you to cook whatever you want, we just need you to send a list of ingredients in with it. If we don’t have the ingredients we are unable to use it. Everything needs to be at the school Friday morning to allow volunteers enough time to label everything. If you have any questions please email Elsabe who has kindly offered to organise the stall (Thank you Elsabe!) [email protected] Our last P&C Meeting for Term 3 will be held Monday 16th September in the teacher’s staff room, starting at 6pm. We welcomed a couple of new faces at Monday’s meeting and would love to see more. Thank you everyone for your ongoing support. Bolwarra Public School P&C Committee

CLASSROOM CAPERS KE The Book Week parade was fantastic! It was so great to see everyone dressed up and so

excited! This week our sound is ‘ay’ and in maths we have been focusing by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.

KT What a busy week we have had! KT would like to say a big thank you to

Mrs Rayfield and Mrs Campbell for visiting our room and sharing their knowledge of Norway and Sweden. We loved the special treats they baked for us too! Greece is our destination this week. We will explore Greek pottery and the designs used to decorate our own vases.

KW In KW this week we are learning about direction in Maths. We have been walking around

the school and describing where things are and giving each other directions to find buildings. Thank you to all of those students who have been reading through their sight words at home. There are some super sight word readers in KW who impress me more and more every day. WELL DONE!

1B We had lots of fun at the Book Week parade yesterday. The costumes were fantastic and it

was wonderful to see all children participating so keenly. 1P Another busy and exciting week! The children enjoyed the Maitland Library visit on Tuesday

to help us get into the swing of Book Week and then of course our exciting book parade yesterday. These occasions are the ones that some children remember for a long time to come. Do you remember any of your Book Week dress ups?

1-2M We were very excited about dressing up for the Book Week parade

yesterday. We are also looking forward to welcoming back Mrs Moore and showing her all the great work we’ve done while she’s been away. I’ve really enjoyed my few weeks with all the lovely children in 1-2M. Thank you to the parent helpers and also to all the dedicated staff for your support and friendship. Pam Shiplee

Page 10: BOLWARRA PUBLIC SCHOOL · Maitland Drama Workshops last week and were selected for the Regional Primary Drama Showcase in Newcastle on 5th September. Well done girls! We welcome Mrs

2B 2B have been working hard this week! We have enjoyed a wonderful presentation from Maitland Library staff in which we listened to 3 short listed books. We really enjoyed this! Dance2bfit has been fantastic - we can’t wait to show everyone our dance at the concert! The Book Week parade was great with lots of interesting costumes! Well done everyone!

2HP 2HP are working towards completing their pieces of writing. They are also

trying to write more interesting sentences. In mathematics 2HP are working on their multiplication skills. They are enjoying doing art work based on ‘Cat in the Hat’ with Miss Pearson too!

2-3C 2-3 are as tough as nails and have been as busy as a bee learning about

similies. Students are as bright as a button and concepts are becoming clear as day! In maths students are learning to convert tenths and hundredths to decimals and are becoming quite clever adding and subtracting decimals. We LOVED our visit from Maitland City Library with a visit from some aliens during book reading. Thanks Mrs McLaren for organising. Reminder homework due this Friday.

3B 3B have had another super busy week. In HSIE we have been writing interesting

descriptions of the people in our families and we are excited about looking through catalogues to spend our money! In maths we have continued to look at multiplication facts and we have enjoyed our investigation into chance. Well done to everyone who participated in our Book Week parade! Keep up the great work 3B!

3-4R It is wonderful to be back with 3-4R. We are looking forward to the Book Week celebrations.

The organisation for the Fathers’ Day stalls next week is well underway. We are commencing our work on ‘Discussions’ (both sides of the argument) and revising measurement in maths. Thank you for the Spellathon support.

4T We all loved dressing up for the Book Week parade this week. Thank you to parents for

their efforts in organising such amazing costumes. This week we have finished off our studies of 'Explanation' and have commenced the text type; 'Description.' We have looked at the structure and what assists in creating a mental image for the reader. Good luck to Myra who competes at the Regional Public Speaking Competition at Valentine today.

4-5WP This week, three students from our class have been involved in a Creative and Practical

Arts camp. We hope that Blayne, Sybylla and Morgan are having an awesome time and we can't wait to hear all about it when they return. Congratulations also goes to Sybylla who was selected to participate in the Hunter/Central Coast Drama Showcase after participating in a regional drama workshop last week. We have been focusing on factors, products and squared numbers in maths this week. Year 4 have also been calculating the perimeter of shapes using millimetres while Year 5 have been learning to apply a given scale in order to measure distances on a map. Finally, we were fortunate to have a Canadian teacher by the name of Miss Whittington visit our class on Monday. We all enjoyed working with Miss Whittington in literacy groups and maths and listening to her Canadian accent while she spoke to us about her travels around the world.

5A This week in class we have been finishing off our animations on Toon Doo. We have written

descriptions on our characters we have created for visual literacy. I would like to thank all of 5A for making this such an enjoyable experience. I wish them all the best for the future.

Page 11: BOLWARRA PUBLIC SCHOOL · Maitland Drama Workshops last week and were selected for the Regional Primary Drama Showcase in Newcastle on 5th September. Well done girls! We welcome Mrs

5-6D This week class 5-6D have been writing discussions, looking at both sides of arguments for and against topics such as ‘Should Homework Be Compulsory’. In maths we have been learning about 24 hour time, converting times from am and pm to 24 hour time and interpreting timetables written in 24 hour time. We have created multimedia texts using the web application Animoto; adding music, text, pictures and video clips to create visual representations of poems about ourselves. Tea and Leigha have been very busy all week attending a Creative and Performing Arts camp. Best wishes to Krishna on Thursday when he represents our school in the Multicultural Public Speaking Competition. Well done to Jessica and Jasmine who were selected from last week’s Regional Drama workshops to perform at the Hunter/Central Coast Drama Showcase in Newcastle. Well done to everyone for dressing up and being part of the celebrations during our Book Week parade.

6L Our dioramas on ‘The Hatchet’ are completed and we worked well in our groups to produce

quality products. We have two chapters to go and we are wondering about the finale and whether Brian will be rescued. We are enjoying using the school iPads to create comics based on the picture book ‘Mirror’. Addition and subtraction of fractions with related denominators has been our focus this week. High school orientations start this week for some students - where has our year gone?

Library

What a fantastic day our Book Week parade was! Thank you to all of the children (and parents!) for the wonderful costumes! A special BIG thank you to our wonderful librarians: Alyssa-Jane, Alice, Beth, April, Zahlia, Lydia, Claire, Jasmine, Jessica and Emma who did a fantastic job decorating the library.

Choir

The Primary Proms is drawing closer – all parents should have purchased their tickets and organised transport to Sydney. The Senior Choir is off to the Hunter School of Performing Arts for a Cluster Rehearsal to prepare for the Festival of Choral Music.

Sport Students are training daily for the upcoming Regional Athletics Carnival. Please remember

to return all notes to Mr Taylor. We have entered 4 teams to participate in a Touch Football Gala Day to be held at Maitland Park in September. Students have been nominated by classroom teachers and will be finalised this week. No trials are necessary for these teams, as the focus is on 'participation' and 'fun' rather than winning.

Science

This week Stage 1 have been looking at food and where it comes from. Some classes have made butter from cream by shaking it in a container with 2 marbles in it to help the process. They then enjoyed eating it on bread. Yum yum!!

Environment Thank you to everyone who have brought in their old batteries, it is really appreciated. The

wind has been knocking the plants around!
