Elegant showhouse causesquitea stir
T
he show house of The Somerset Life-
style and Retirement Village, Somer-
set Wests new R750 million retire-
ment and lifestyle development, has
causedquiteastir,saidWestacreProperty
Group developer Okkie Potgieter.
The reaction follows the special care taken
byOkkiePotgietersdaughter,Renet,withthe
interior decorating and furnishing of the
show house.
We received very positive feedback from
especially the ladieswithregardto thequality
and the peaceful elegance of the interior deco-
rating of the show house. The furnishings
were specially selected and, in some cases,
even crafted specifically for the show house,
Potgieter said. Special buying trips were ar-
ranged to obtain pieces of high quality furni-
ture from longstanding suppliers like Hart-
mann & Kepler.
Elements of the show house that elicited fa-
vourable comments were the high ceilings
andthewaysoftcoloursusedinthedcorcom-
plemented it. The combinations of the de-
tailed finishes that Westacre Devco are
known for, as well as the choices of finishes
including paint colour, tiles, granite and fit-
tings provide an overall feeling of class.
What is immediately noticeable, especially
in the kitchen, is the choice of cupboard fin-
ishes with Blum Soft Close drawers as stand-
ard, the choice of kitchen cupboard doors,
kitchen door handles and the layout in gener-
al. Potgieter said buyers will have the option
of making certain adjustments to the current
layout and plans. A unique corner kitchen
cupboard with a drawer will be an option in
thekitchendesignand therewill alsobeother
optionsincludingunderfloorheating,aircon-
ditioners as well as a wood burning fireplace.
Buyers can choose to enclose the patio and
convert it into a sunroom.
The show house can be viewed daily be-
tween 10:00 to 13:00 and from 14:00 to 17:00.
Freehold residencesarebeingmarketed for
between R2,3 million and R4,85 million, cot-
tages for between R1,8 million and R2,8 mil-
lion and apartments fromR1,2million to R2,2
million.
The development is on the high-lying east-
ern parts of Somerset West. The first phases
have already been provided with roads and
fencing, and transfers are expected to take
place towards the end of January next year.
The retirement development of some 200
residences will be available to the retirement
as well as the residential market and is the
first development that fully complieswith the
newbuildingregulationsof theSouthAfrican
National Standards (SANS) concerning effi-
cient energy usage.
The project spans 16 hectares and encom-
passes a planned eight phases. Five of the
phases have state of the art security, while
phase four and five are currently being pro-
vided with roads. Three more security devel-
opments will be built adjacent to The Somer-
set, increasing the number of new residences
in this area by 600, to the value of R1 billion.
The Somerset will be managed by the Cape
PeninsulaOrganisationfortheAged(CPOA),.
which owns 22 retirement villages in the
Western Cape and manages an additional 16
facilities.
Additions to The Somerset include a new
shopping centre adjacent to the development
commencing in January 2013, a Curro School
as well as a few sectional title medical suites.

sible formore than 700 residential opportuni-
ties in this area. The Somerset will be this

Whatwill happen in2013?
S
o, just what will happen in the prop-
erty market in 2013?
Noonereallyknows, butall indicationsare
that the trend for 2012
will continue.
This yearwe experi-
enced a consistent de-
mand for property.
This consistent de-
mand and the steady
resultant sales have
led to a drop in the
number of properties
available for pur-
chase.
This is healthy for a
property market.
Like all markets,
the property market
works on supply and
demand. When there
is an over-supply of
property and no in-
crease in demand,
then property prices
drop.
Where the demand
is good and stock
levels drop, property
prices increase.
What weve seen in 2012 is an increase in
property values, in general, in the region of
57%.While not exceptional, it is still consid-
erably better than the fall in values experi-
enced in 2009 and early 2010.
So, if the current trend continues, we can
expect to see similar growth in property val-
ues in 2013.
Does this mean its best to sell later? Not
really, as inflation is in the order of 6%. This
means that your Rands purchase you 6% less
goodsnextyear,andthisvirtuallycancelsout
any growth in property values.
So, if you want to sell your property, then
list when you are ready, and settle for fair
market value.
On the positive,
what this does mean
for property buyers is
that your asset will
keep pace with infla-
tion. Property has al-
ways been a long-term
investment and
thats the view we
should always take.
The days of buying
and selling and
making a quick for-
tuneare over, fornow.
Its a great time to
purchase property,
with sellersnowbeing
realistic about the list
price, andbanksbeing
more open to finance.
One of the trendswe
can expect to see is
that the banks will re-
duce the amount of
100% finance which
they currently pro-
vide. Sadly, this will mean that most buyers
will have to put downadeposit of at least 10%
and also have the transfer fees available.
In addition to this, the banks seem to be of-
feringverypoorinterestrates.Thehigherthe
loan-to-value, the worse the interest rate.
So beprepared for this, and factor it into your
affordability calculations.
Its been a pretty rocky financial year glo-
bally. We wait with bated breath to see what
will happen inEuropeand theUSAwith their
critical debt issues.
And yet, despite all these issues, we have
still seen steady movement in the local mar-
ket.
In fact, Harcourts Platinum has experi-
enced an 80% increase in sales this year
which just goes to show that, if a property is
correctly priced and well marketed, it will
sell.
The fact remains thatwe live in a spectacu-
lar part of the world, and we enjoy a really
good lifestyle.
Enjoyyourholidaysandtravelsafely.Lets
all do our part to make 2013 a year with great
memories for our families and loved ones.

swered, email Steve, principal of Harcourts

Buyingahome fromhome
A
s the year winds down and many
South Africans prepare for the
their long awaited holiday to our
countrys stunning coastal regions, the
lure of the sun, sea and carefree lifestyle
will compel many property investors to
consider purchasing a holiday home
This is according to Adrian Goslett, CEO
ofRE/MAXof SouthernAfrica,who says that
because of the relaxed lifestyle and natural
beauty that the coastal regions offer, proper-
ties therewill always remain in high demand
among a broad spectrum of buyers that are
looking foraholidaygetaway, the ideal retire-
ment residence, or a lifestyle that is far re-
moved from the hustle and bustle of city liv-
ing.
While the leisure property market has re-
mainedfairlyflat intheaftermathofthereces-
sion, there are certain areas alongSouthAfri-
cas coastline that continue to showstrongde-
mand.
Due to the topography of the coastal areas
there is limited space to build, and, in turn
this means that there are a limited number
ofpropertiesavailable tobuyers.Basedonthe
fundamental principle of supply anddemand,
the limited number of properties available
along the coastline ensures that these areas
aregenerally sought-after theworldover, and
South Africas coastal properties are no ex-
ception.
A well-chosen and well-maintained holi-
dayhomeat the coast that is inagood location
will often prove to be both a relaxing family
getawayspot and sound investment over time
through solid appreciation.
Goslett says thatconsideringtheexorbitant
cost of coastal holiday accommodation, par-
ticularly during the peak seasons, investing
inaholidayhomecouldmake financial sense,
especially if the owner holidays in the same
area year after year. Themoney spent on the
holidays could be used to pay off the bond and
in 20 years or less, this fully paid-for holiday
home could be their no-cost retirement resi-
dence, comments Goslett.
Another benefit of purchasing a holiday
homeis that it cangenerateanincome.Awell-
positioned holiday home can be rented out
during the year or over the holiday seasons
when the owner is unable to make use of the
property. Income generated by rentals will
greatly contribute to covering the costs of
owning and managing the property. Buyers
should, however, bear inmind that theremay
be some implications of managing a property
in a different province and the services of a
professional rental management company
might be required. A good rental agent will
conduct regular inspections and screen, se-
lect and place tenants as well as collect rental
money.
Goslett says that, as with any property pur-
chase, thesame fundamentalprinciplesapply
whenconsideringbuyingaholidayhome.For
example, the location of the property remains
vital from an investment perspective as the
location in which a holiday home is situated
will have an impact on the capital apprecia-
tionof thepropertyanditwillbeanimportant
element to attracting tenants.
Properties with views of the ocean or
mountains are highly sought after, as are
those within walking distance to the beach
and amenities such as shopping malls, enter-
tainment and medical facilities, notes Gos-
lett.
He points out that holiday home buyers
should also consider their financial position,
paying particular attention to the acquisition
costs such as a deposit, transfer fees and con-
veyancing fees, as well as the impact of possi-
ble interest rate increases, ongoing monthly
maintenance, security and insurance costs
and the rates, taxes and utility tariffs in the

Nuwe,nuweVolkswagenKewer !
HANS HEESE
V
olkswagen se nuwe, nuwe Kewer
gaan binnekort by die plaaslike
handelaars op die vloer staan - en
baie aandag trek!
Twee of meer geslagte Suid-Afrikaners het
grootgeword met Volkswagen Kewers wat
vanaf1951tot1979inUitenhagedieproduksie-
lyn verlaat het en een van die laaste modelle
is steeds die enigste motor van een van my
motorskrywer-kollegas!
In 2000 het die nuwe Kewer sy opwagting
uit Mexiko by ons gemaak en was ek verbaas
hoeveel ouermensenader gestaanhet enkom
gesels het omdie geskiedenisweer in n nuwe
baadjie te herleef. Mense bly maar sentimen-
teel. Daarom is die nuwe, nuweKewer n vars
en fris nuwe motor op die mark wat kopers
by dosyne gaan lok, by wyse van spreke.
Die nuwe Kewer onderskei hom van sy
voorgangermet nmeer gespierde voorkoms,
groter funksionaliteit en nuwe enjins wat by-
dra tot lewendige verrigting en sportiewe ge-
drag. Om eerlik te wees, dit is meer n soort
vanman-motorassyvoorganger,watmiskien
meer chic was en n groter aantal vroue-ko-
pers verlei het.
DieKewerhetnoubrer, langer enookplat-
herinner.Aandiebuitekantmaakhierdienu-
we lyne n sterk indruk. Binne is daar ook nu-
we lyne en instrumentasie, en n Suid-Afrika-
ner in Wolfsburg, Ona Scheepers, het die
kleurkombinasies enmateriaal vir die binne-
ruim ontwerp. (Onthou u nog NP van Wyk
Louw se epiese werk Die Pluimsaad waai
Ver?).
MaardieKewer gaanbaie verder as nbloot
stilistiese ontwerpwat nuut en vars en vrolik
is. Hy is n praktiese tweedeur koepeewaarin
asdit byverrigtingkom, isdaargeen
ooreenkoms tussen die twee nie,
want die nuwe kleintjie skop 77 kW
teen 5 000 toere perminuut uit en het
wringkrag vir Afrika. Daar is oor n
wye band 175 Nm beskikbaar vanaf
1 550 tot 4 100 rpm,wat diewringkur-
we van n goeie dieselenjin amperna
Zimbabwiese dollars laat lyk.Die ge-
heim vir hierdie uitstekende wring-
kraglewering is natuurlik die ge-
bruik van n turbo-aanjaer. Iemand
watnieweetwatdiegroottevanhier-
die Kewer se enjin is nie, sal kan glo
dat dit n 1.6 of 1.8 liter Volkswagen
enjin is.
Die alternatiewe enjin waarmee
die Kewer toegerus kan word, is die
uitsonderlike 1.4 TSI-enjin, wat ge-
bruik maak van beide turbo-aanja-
ging asook n kompressor. In hierdie
geval word daar 118 kW ontwikkel
teen 5 800 rpm en styg die wringkrag
na240 Nm,watookoordieselfdewye
bandbeskikbaar is.AsdieKewernie
somooi was nie, sou jymet hom kon
ploeg.
Die krag word deur n sesgang handratkas
na die voorwiele oorgedra, en in die geval van
die 1.4DSGmet n outomatiese ratkaswat oor
nie minder as sewe gange beskik nie. Dit stel
die 1.2 Kewer in staat om binne 10.9 sekondes
van 0-100 km/h te versnel, en die 1.4-modelle
in net meer as 8 sekondes. Die naald sal by
die onderskeiemodelle by 180km/hennet on-
der 210 km/h gaan draai as dit die slag moet.
Gemiddelde brandstofverbruik vir al die mo-
delle is rondom 6 l/100 km.
Hoe hanteer hierdie knaapmet sy amperse
Porsche-lyne op die pad? Di wat oud genoeg
is, weet dat Kewers, net soos Borgwards, ern-
stig aan stuur-oorywerigheid gely het. En as
jy die bestuurstyl bemeester het, kon jy met
hulle toor; indien nie, het hulle gerol. Finish
is.
DieKewerhetdieEuropeseveiligheidstoet-
se met vliende vaandels geslaag en is in die
boonste klas van kwaliteitsmotors.
Die allooiwiele maak die nisse mooi vol
die 1.2 liter het 16 wiele, en die 1.4 modelle
groot 17 vellings. Al nadeel is die Marie-
beskuitjie-noodwiele om massa en plek te
spaar.
Diegenewat terugverlang na die herlewing
van klassieke motors sal die nuwe Kewer
waarskynlik verkies bo die ander tweemede-
dingers, die Mini en die Fiat 500.

VOLVOV40 T3:GOODRECIPE
Excel is very far fromstaidorboring
CLAIRE MAASCH
I
ts always a great indication of a good
product if you can boast enthusiastic
brand ambassadors amongst your cus-
tomers. Volvo must be doing excellent
work with its cars as I had the pleasure
of being accosted by a very enthusiastic
Volvoownerwhile driving the V40T3Ex-
cel the other day.
The episodewent something like this: I had
just taken delivery of an eye-wateringly
bright red Volvo V40 T3 and was on my way
into town for some or other reason. Having
always fobbed Volvos off as a little bit on the
staid and boring side, Iwas revisingmyopin-
ion as I drove and subsequently, was hyper
awareof anysimilar cars tomineon the road.
Soitwaswithsomecuriosity that Iwatched
the antics of a Volvo V60 driver as he cruised
past me, slowed down and hung about in the
right lane. I indicated a left turn whereupon
he slipped behind me and followed me to my
destination. Slightly alarmed, I prepared to
bolt when he stoppedme, apologised for scar-
ing me and asked whether he could please
take a look at the V40.
What transpired was a conversation with
a die-hard Volvo fanwho extolled the virtues
of his car and Volvo as a brand; which made
me realise just what a winning recipe Volvo
could be sitting on.Here are someof thehigh-
lights from our conversation:
Volvos safety standards.With anNCAP 5*
rating, the V40 is one of the safest cars on
the road. The clever chaps at Volvomanufac-
ture each car with City Safety which auto-
matically applies the brakes at speeds of up
to 50km/h (alleged on the V40) whichwe test-
ed with much success up to 35km/h. It also
includes a pedestrian airbag under the bon-
netwhich inflates tominimisedamage to car,
passengers and pedestrians in the event of
City Safety not kicking in. The car offers 6
airbags throughout, side impact control, im-
pact tensioning seatbelts and ABS brakes.
Then theres the new styling. The V40
hatchback is a decidedly fun and sporty look-
ing Volvo. Its impressive styling and sleek
lineswitheye-catchingfeaturesarearefresh-
ing move away from my misperceptions of
Volvos vehicles as staid and somewhat bor-
ing. I loved the fabulous red paintwork of the
T3whichwe tested and it drewan impressive
crowd of admirers each day at the office. And
thereweremore surprises inside the vehicle.
As theenthusiasticVolvoownersocorrect-
ly pointed out tome,Volvos are excellent val-
ue for money because you get so much more
for your rands than with many other motor
manufacturers.
For instance, in theT3wedrove, the trendy
avant-garde interior boasted mood lighting,
moulded leather seats in front with electric
seat adjustment. The central hangdown from
the dash was a funky white with red stripes
which complemented the cars exterior col-
our you also have the option to select your
own design.
You could see further Swedish influence in
the frameless rear-view mirror, illuminated
gear-lever and trendychromedswoopsabove
thedoorhandles. In fact, every time I climbed
in to start driving the V40, a sense of smug-
ness at my good fortune overcame me. Im
not surprised Volvo encourages a new crop
ofbrandambassadorswitheachnewcarsold.
That isnt all. The back seats fold flat in a
convenient 60/40 split, the car also has rear
park assist, an auto dim function on the rear-
view mirror, climate control and a multi-
function steering wheel.
The interior is roomy and seats 3 passen-
gers behind in luxurious leather comfort.
The turbo-charged 1.6 engine packs enough
punch to ensure there can be no performance
related gripes from my side and despite a
week of mixed driving and commuting the
90km round trip to work each day, I still re-
turned the car with a quarter left in the 62l
tank two thumbs up for fuel economy.
Seeing as Ive just about convinced you to
go and buy one, you may want to consider
the various options. Volvo offers the T3 in 3
price/accessory brackets: The Essential
(R281 200), Excel (R299 300) and Elite (R313
200).
All of them come with a maintenance plan
of 100 000km or 5 years. Whichever one you
choose though, be assured that you too will
become a smug Volvo brand ambassador
The Volvo T3 boasted a trendy avant-garde interior with mood lighting, moulded leather
seats in front with electric seat adjustment.

MBSL500:A PROUDHERITAGE

Mercedes SL and we were fortunate
enough to spend a week with the latest
SL500.
The SL nomenclature stands for Sport
Leicht (sporty, light) and first graced the
now-priceless metal of the 1950s 300SL Gull-
wing. A convertible version and the daintier
190SL were followed by the 1960s Pagoda,
then Bobby Ewings R107, Lady Dis R129 and
the more recent R230 models.
This R231 shape follows Mercs current de-
sign with a square face and simple rear end,
connected by flowing profiles and huge
wheels. Our Edition 1 specimen (R135 000
option) had a stunning red n silver designo
interior, most optional extras and the folding-
metal Vario Roof with Magic Sky light-ad-
justable glass ceiling.
Other itemswhichmake this a full four-sea-
son car are the fantastic climate seats with
Air Scarf, two-way dynamic support, three-
way memory and four-way massage settings.
Unfortunately, theroofonlyoperatesatstand-
still orwalking speed and ourswent on strike
two days before we returned the car.
Another disobedient novelty was the new
boot opener which just requires a wave of
your foot under the rear bumper (should your
hands be carrying groceries) to open the boot
lid. It worked perfectly in my driveway but
never in public. You shouldve seen the faces
of fellow shoppers
Its only natural that the new SL will get
you lots of looks, especially when it comes in
Magnetite Black with designo red leather.
Other items you could point out to onlookers
are the IWC centre clock, Logic 7 surround
soundsystem,keylessentryand ignition,Dis-
tronic adaptive cruise control, ambient light-
ing and active park assist.
Theymight also be interested in the intelli-
gentbi-Xenonlights,COMANDOnline,media
interface, dual climate control and sporty
steering wheel, never mind the regular stuff
like ABS/EBD brakes, dynamic stability con-
trol, airbags plus a shedload of automatic and
electric goodies. All SLs also feature Active
Body Control (ABC) with Comfort or Sport
mode to suit your mood, as well as an ECO
start/stop system tomaximise range from the
75 l fuel tank. Options include AMG and cos-
metic items, Bang&Olufsen sound system, re-
versing camera and designo paints.
Powering theSL500 isanew4663 ccbi-turbo
petrol V8 with 320 kW (435 hp) or 700 Nm
through a 7-speed automatic gearbox with
shift paddles. AverageCO2 emissions are just
213 g/km while average consumption is
pinned at 9.2 l/100km. We averaged 12.5 l but
long distances yielded mid nines.
Unsurprisingly, the motor is incredibly
powerful and dishes up mountains of torque
from low down. The gearbox offers three
modes,Economy,Sport andManualwhile the
V8has quite a subdued andhad ahoarse rum-
ble to it which changes to a decent roar and
much hissing when you floor it.
Top speed is limited to the obligatory
250km/h and 100km/h should come up in a
blistering 4.6 seconds something we can ab-
solutely vouch for. With strong gusts of wind,
our SL500 logged GPS runs between 4.7 and
4.2 seconds in either wind direction, averag-
ing 4.53 seconds. Amazing!
The turbo-fed enginehas a slight post-throt-
tle power surge and the gearbox messed up
one or two kick-down requests in Economy
mode while the suspensions Comfort mode
proved a bit spongy. Put everything in Sport
and the SL livens up, but only to a point. This
is not an M3 killer.
No, the SL500 is a powerful grand tourer,
something its over-assisted and variable elec-
tro-mechanical steering underlines. It wants
you to drop the roof, raise the beautiful wind
deflector, turn up the excellent sound system
(with huge bass reflex cavities) and rumble
along your favourite road.
With substantial weight savings and new
technology over its predecessor, the new SLs
roadholding isextremely impressive.Thecar
feels light and responsive, easily reaching the
handling category for expert or suicidal driv-
ers where grip levels and cornering speeds
call for lightning reflexes.
It also has a very comprehensive on-board
computer and COMAND infotainment unit
with TV tuner and 6-disc CD/DVD changer.
AnSL500 costsR1635 000 includingaone-year
warranty and a 6-year/120 000km mainte-
nance plan. Factoring in exclusivity, technol-
ogy, quality and power, my overriding sensa-
tion of the SL500 was one of supreme comfort
and sophistication. Itmaynot be the sportiest
or lightest but it will make all its ancestors
and any new owner proud. Galimoto Media

DIFFERENT:QUIRKY DESIGN
HANJO STIER
A
s great as it is to screech around a
race track inAMGsorchase identi-
calAudis upamountainpass, I find
it wonderfully refreshing to test an ordi-
nary car from time to time.
By ordinary Imean normal, sensible and
somethingmost people could afford like the
Chevrolet Cruze.
Besides appealing to a broader audience,
everyday cars do not require me to explain
the nuances of five-stage satellite-guided
drive-train management systems, nor do I
have to paint a rosy picture of the lifestyle as-
sociated with dropping six figures on a Polo-
sized roadster.
No, the Cruze has and is none of those
things.StartingatR201 800andgoingthrough
three engine variants up to R285 700, the
Cruze sedan has now been joined by this
hatchback version. Available as either a 1.6L
or 1.8L petrol four cylinder, Cruze hatch costs
R212 400 or R224 800.
Both hatchbacks use a five-speed manual
gearbox while the top-spec diesel sedan can
also be shipped as an automatic shifter. A
quick peak under this hatchbacks bonnet re-
vealed an engine which looked remarkably
like an Opel unit with a Chevy badge stuck
onto it.
Gathering the majority of recent critique,
the petrol engines were declared as slightly
weak. This becomes especially evident when
one drives them at higher altitudes or puts
them next to any of their high-pressure, di-
rect-injection, turbo-charged contemporar-
ies.
Maximum power outputs are 91kW (124hp)
or 155Nm for the 1.6 and 104kW (141hp) or
176Nmforitsbiggerbrother.Averageclaimed
consumption hovers below 7L/100km and
CO2 emissions are 157g/km, which is either
a series of printing errors or testament to the
ECOTEC engines efficiency.
Over a week of average motoring and a
lengthyexploratory journeyduring theweek-
end, I found this motor to be willing, quite
smooth and linear in its delivery, reasonably
torqueyandthroaty. Itcanburnrubber, if just
a little bit, and never really reaches the limits
of the Cruze chassis.
Blessed with a front McPherson setup and
something Chevy calls a Compound Crank
Axle at the rear, I think theCruze hatchback
has one of thee most forgiving and comforta-
ble rides. YourMomwill approve. Most nota-
bly,we found rear passenger comfort to be ex-
ceptional; something other hatchbacks often
ignore.
The flipside of this coin is that the Cruze
hatchhas quite awonky ridewhenyou throw
it around city blocks or a seaside serpentine
road. Added to the above mentioned lack of
grunt, the car puts up with quite a bit until
its stability control sets in or the idiot driver
realises that this isa familyhatch,notaCater-
ham.
Should you overcook things in your Cruze
hatch, a comprehensive list of safety items
will rush to your side. Other standard kit in-
cludes ISOFIX anchors, remote central lock-
ing, trip computer, power windows and mir-
rors, radio/CD with USB/mp3/Aux, Blue-
tooth, cruise control, steering wheel buttons,
leather trim, alarm and immobiliser.
Theres actually a lotmore and I encourage
you to visit your nearest dealer to have a good
poke around its interior. Opinions differed
slightly but Ive always liked theCruze interi-
ors. There are parts from other GM brands,
strange trip computer behaviour and hard
plastics aplenty but I just like it. Its different
and cool.
A family of four will find sufficient room,
also for their luggage (413L boot), while the
rear seats fold almost flat for those bigmoves.
Throw out the family, put foot and the 1.8L
Cruze hatchwill reach 100km/h in 11 seconds
or v-max of 195km/h, its weaker 1.6L counter-
part needs 12.8 seconds and reaches 188km/h.
We had to double-check if this wasnt per-
haps a 2.0L because our test unit kept logging
mid-10 seconds runs to 100km/h on our GPS,
eventually clockinganastonishingbest of 9.9!
For a naturally-aspirated and reasonably
clean 1,800, the cars full-throttle pace is quite
impressive.
With a goodmix of city traffic and highway
commuting, our Cruze hatchback soon
proved to be an unassuming, comfortable,
docile mode of transport with just enough
poke to safely overtake and a well-stacked
five-speed gearbox for some manual fun or
sparing long distances from the 60L tank.
Chevrolet could probably throw in a sixth
gear and some new engines but as the Cruze
standsbeforeyounow,sportingminortweaks
and the new hatch models, its technology is
far from redundant or inefficient. Added to
the great value of these cars, you also get a
5-year/120 000km warranty and 3-year/60
000km service plan.
Starting at R201,800 and going through three engine variants up to R285,700, the Cruze se-
dan has now been joined by this hatchback version.
